The 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array from G-Technology is an external hard drive array that provides real-time mirrored backup of all data. The array features two 2TB hard drive modules in a RAID 1 configuration for real-time backup of data. Data is mirrored to both physical drives, so if a single drive fails your data will remain secure.
The array connects to a computer via eSATA. The array features a front-panel LCD for monitoring, as well as an audible alarm that sounds in the event of drive failure. Each drive can be swapped with ease, allowing you to easily replace a failed disk, or to swap to a different RAID set. The drive ships formatted with the HFS+ file system for Mac OS X, but can be reformatted for use in Windows.

I purchased this "plug and use" drive a month ago and it replaces three hard drives that I had linked together. I'm using FCP Studio to edit AVCHD and HDV acquired on tape and now with cards. I feel a lot more secure knowing I've got a Raid 1 config. backing up my assets for projects. It's also nice to eliminate the space the other three drives took up with this small footprint drive.

Bought two of these. Both have failed from overheating. G-Tech admits there is a problem with the firmware which causes fan to stop operating under circumstances where it should be operating. They have a firmware fix - but the firmware causes the RAID to not be OSX bootable. So you either get firmware which burns up the unit or firmware which makes it unusable with Macs.
Tech support at G-Tech was great until Hitachi bought it, but now it is terrible. Tech support personnel are flippant and unhelpful in the extreme.
It's sad to see a good company with good products be acquired and ruined. Unfortunately, that seems to have happened here.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. BH has better options.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
I wanted a new backup hard drive to keep my 10's of 1,000's of JPEG and RAW images and wanted an array for additional protection. I bought this and had a bit of trouble getting it to connect to my Windows based PC, but after a brief search on the internet and confirming my suspicions with G-tech support staff, I found that I simply had to "clean" the drive of the Mac formatting first before re-formatting it for Windows. Once that first step was completed, re-formatting it to use with my Dell XPS 400 PC was a snap! Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

Using this drive to store my images and lightroom 3 catalog. Never have to think about a backup schedule because its always backedup. I bought the kit with the spare drive module so that i am cycling thru the drives for an extra layer of backup safety.

Very high quality construction. Seems solid as a rock. Ran into a slight hiccup on the install because of the specifics of my motherboard. No problem, tech support answered immediately and had the answer in seconds.
For the first time, I feel that my photos, music, documents, etc. are protected.
Why did I wait so long?!

Ordered this drive as to function as an archive setup for a client. Setup couldn't be easier and with an eSata connection the data transfers FLY back and forth. Only drawback I can think of (and this is stretching it) is that it is not portable (which I didn't want it to be) and a little heavy.

I already own a 1TB G-Safe and have been very satisfied with it's performance. From the clean lines, durable sturdy enclosure, to the matching aluminium finish this drive is a solid performer. I use the drive to store my entire Aperture library.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
This G-Safe may be a good solution for many users with redundant storage requirements for irreplacable
files. In my experience Firewire 800 on Mac is more
"delicate" than FW400. Do not hot
swap this drive or run risk of frying computer output. Use
File Eject ALWAYS and TURN OFF drive before plugging/
unplugging cables. Boot computer first, then turn on drive.
The drive also has USB 2.0 inputs, and can connect
from back of monitor with no problems. Also has
SATA input in case your computer has this output,
or can be upgraded by installing SATA card, user
doable. SATA connection would be ideal for speed and reliability. This RAID system has many excellent
features, such as the ability to monitor the condition of both drives, the temperature, even the
fan speed from the front panel. If one drive fails it is easily replaced and cloned and
the unit comes with a spare. Since your files are
your work, your personals, and irreplaceable--always
TAKE CARE!!! This is a good unit, but haste and
carelessness can ruin anything!

Have been a fan of G-tech products for years, this drive is no exception. I'm using it to store my media library because it was filling up my HD. Now I've got it RAIDed and I run a weekly backup of the G-SAFE to a network drive. Its nice knowing that my data is safely backed up without cluttering up my computer HD.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
Plugged the G-Safe into a MacPro and began to backup my Aperture Library with Aperture's Vault feature. It's that simple to use! When the backups are complete I turn the G-Safe off so it's not on all the time with the fan blowing. It doesn't go to sleep until your computer is turned off or goes to sleep. It is very compact. I placed it behind the computer monitor so it takes up no useable desktop space. Very nice!

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
At the risk of sounding like a shill, I love this machine. It's fast and reliable, and with RAID 1 you don't need to worry about backing up - but you should always have a spare drive on hand in case of failure. G-Safe's Hitachis are excellent but all drives fail - all. You can get a 1TB drive with the drive rails pre-installed direct from G-Safe. These are drives that are designed to play nice with RAIDs and I've had good luck with them.
If you want high performance, and don't mind the bulk, get an OWC Mercury-Elite Al-Pro. You won't want to travel with it, but it's fast and can do RAID 5 for speed and security.
But for video jobs, travel, basic editing or media download/storage, this is the item to get. I use my G-Safe for downloading and storing original camera media, and the OWC for Quicktimes and editing. Solid.
I wish G-Tech would make a version of this exactly the same BUT with removable laptop-size drives. Removable is key, so you can replace bad or damaged drives and not have to stop work.

I do data management for NFL Films as well as record Iso recordings for GFL.TV on a regular basis with this drive and it is incredible. Average transfer rate connected firewire 800 is over 50 megs a second. I absolutely love having it in my arsenal. For example... the red one footage I am working with today is about $30,000. It is very nice to Know... not think or wonder but to know that I will not be loosing any of this precious and expensive data. Thanks

I'm using this with a Mac Pro to back up photos and video, along with doing a bit of editing. I use this with a Raid 1 configuration. It interfaces easily with Mac. I also have another G Tech 1TB external drive which I've been using for about a year. Their products seem to be well built and sturdy.
I have a great amount of still images and video and trust that this will be part of my backup plan for years to come.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
I needed a raid drive that I could count on to keep my feature motion picture on at the edit house. I chose the G-Safe because I have used G-Tech drives over the past 5 years for TV and film projects and found them reliable. This drive rendered the film and made a final QuickTime output flawlessly. My online editor was shocked how fast it worked in even the Firewire 8 mode. It seems to run a little warm but that's OK. The Status menu is great.

I wanted to protect all the time and work that I invested in my digital photography. I had nightmares thinking that my hard drive would crash and all my hours of hard work would be lost. After much research I discovered the 2TB G-Safe External Hard Drive Array. I found the best price at B&H Photo Video. The unit is easy to install, set-up, and looks great. Most important, the unit runs QUIETLY.
I really feel like I got my moneys worth and more.

This G-Safe has not worked since I received it. I was attempting to resolve it with a G-Tech rep, but he seems to have disappeared, too. The device was not recognized by my Mac Pro and the drives were not recognized by the device. No work = no stars.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
I love the peace of mind that RAID 1 gives in saving duplicate copies of my valuable data. The G-SAFE also provides a simple but effective LCD display that shows the status of each drive—if one fails, you are alerted immediately, and can take the appropriate action. With FW800 file transfers are super fast. I will definitely be looking at G-Technology for my next HD purchase.
