The 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array from G-Technology is an external hard drive array that provides real-time mirrored backup of all data. The array features two 2TB hard drive modules in a RAID 1 configuration for real-time backup of data. Data is mirrored to both physical drives, so if a single drive fails your data will remain secure.
The array connects to a computer via eSATA. The array features a front-panel LCD for monitoring, as well as an audible alarm that sounds in the event of drive failure. Each drive can be swapped with ease, allowing you to easily replace a failed disk, or to swap to a different RAID set. The drive ships formatted with the HFS+ file system for Mac OS X, but can be reformatted for use in Windows.

I purchased this "plug and use" drive a month ago and it replaces three hard drives that I had linked together. I'm using FCP Studio to edit AVCHD and HDV acquired on tape and now with cards. I feel a lot more secure knowing I've got a Raid 1 config. backing up my assets for projects. It's also nice to eliminate the space the other three drives took up with this small footprint drive.

Bought two of these. Both have failed from overheating. G-Tech admits there is a problem with the firmware which causes fan to stop operating under circumstances where it should be operating. They have a firmware fix - but the firmware causes the RAID to not be OSX bootable. So you either get firmware which burns up the unit or firmware which makes it unusable with Macs.
Tech support at G-Tech was great until Hitachi bought it, but now it is terrible. Tech support personnel are flippant and unhelpful in the extreme.
It's sad to see a good company with good products be acquired and ruined. Unfortunately, that seems to have happened here.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. BH has better options.

Nothing to say so far, except that everything works fine ! Once out of the box, it's ready to use ! I use this drive to backup shooting (HD video) and family photos. The cooling fan is very quiet. I just hope other replacement drives will be easy to find if I need extra disk space.

I use this for Time Machine backups and storage. I partitioned the drives and dedicated one for Time Machine and the other for storage. Drive is small and quiet. Very fast access even when I am using it for photos and movies in Photoshop and Final Cut. Bought a spare drive in case one of the drives fail and it was 50% off when I purchased the Array. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for redundant, fail safe storage and back up.

Great hard drive. Built solid not like the other hard drives made out of plastic and fairly quite considering it has a fax.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
...check back in 5 years. I had to visit the G-Tech website to figure out how to format it for Windows. It's very simple once you find the instructions. The included booklet and CD were probably out-of-date the day this thing was shipped and were quite useless. This was expected. The internal temperature is displayed in Celsius which is kind of pretentious.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
This is my second 2TB GSafe Raid drive and I have to say, I haven't had any problems. With the ever impending threat of drive failure lurking all the time, I like this unit for what it does. However, just like the first one I ordered form a diff dealer, this is unit arrived DOA with a fan failure (the first one I ordered 2 yrs ago had dual drive failure (!)) Perhaps both issues occurred during shipping. No way to know. What I do know is that I haven't had one hardware issue with my first drive since I exchanged it 2 years ago. SIDE NOTE: If you use Pro Tools though, these drives are out, causing error messages even when attached and unmounted.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
This is the second G-Safe I've purchased, and I have done so because it has shown to be a safe way to back up your important files. In my case, I've got lots of music, and lots of photos, and after a previous external drive failed with one full year of family memories on it, I decided that the G-Safe, with its duplicated drives, and its cooling fan, should keep me safe. So far I'm very happy with my first G-Safe, and this second one gives me a separate drive for Time Machine, and lets me get rid of those single, overheating external drives. As well, the daisy chain feature of the G-Safes means that they both attach to my iMAC, via a single Firewire port.

Have it just for some two weeks. Testing it: For 10 days drive is " ON" non stop - so far it is cool and very quiet especially for "array" double drive. Drive physically in reality much smaller then expected. Looks like it`s going to last ....

Product runs great and can keep up when running avid. Only con is it is not meant to transport easily. I had to buy an all weather case for it to move it around. Besides that loving the gtech gsafe so far.

This unit is great to use. I have final cut pro and it is completely compatable. All I had to to was turn it on and set up some files and begin. I feel very confident about the back-up drive and with the new tapeless cameras it is extrementy useful. It also gives me a "peace-of-mind" knowing that i have everything backed-up. I also use another external drive just to store an extra copy of fy video files.

I love how simple this backup solution is to use. Plug and play right out of the box for my Macs. I have each one of these for each work station to use as a working hard drive. Should any one fail, the RAID setup will ensure that there will always be a copy of the files. I threw away all the packaging contents and just downloaded the manual pdf from online to each machine to save clutter at the office. That way each machine can refer to manual digitally.
A separate G SAFE Spare drive is a must if you want to keep an off site copy of the files. I rotate the drives once a week with a third drive.

This is the second G Safe I have bought.
Used the first one to store all my data, including all photos, videos that I shoot, and as a backup to my Mac on Time Machine. Was running out of space and decided to get another one for the HD video I shoot on my 7D.
The unit is fast, and provides a secure way to save irreplaceable data. Each drive can be replaced if it goes bad, and the entire drive will be built up as soon as it is replaced. I haven't had a disk failure yet, so have not had the need to replace a drive.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
I wanted a new backup hard drive to keep my 10's of 1,000's of JPEG and RAW images and wanted an array for additional protection. I bought this and had a bit of trouble getting it to connect to my Windows based PC, but after a brief search on the internet and confirming my suspicions with G-tech support staff, I found that I simply had to "clean" the drive of the Mac formatting first before re-formatting it for Windows. Once that first step was completed, re-formatting it to use with my Dell XPS 400 PC was a snap! Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

Using this drive to store my images and lightroom 3 catalog. Never have to think about a backup schedule because its always backedup. I bought the kit with the spare drive module so that i am cycling thru the drives for an extra layer of backup safety.

Very high quality construction. Seems solid as a rock. Ran into a slight hiccup on the install because of the specifics of my motherboard. No problem, tech support answered immediately and had the answer in seconds.
For the first time, I feel that my photos, music, documents, etc. are protected.
Why did I wait so long?!

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-SAFE External Hard Drive Array:
Ordered this drive as to function as an archive setup for a client. Setup couldn't be easier and with an eSata connection the data transfers FLY back and forth. Only drawback I can think of (and this is stretching it) is that it is not portable (which I didn't want it to be) and a little heavy.
