The G-RAID 4TB model is not supported by Windows XP or older 32-bit operating systems which limit maximum volume size to 2TB. G-RAID 4TB is compatible with systems running Mac OS X, Windows Vista, or other 64-bit operating systems.
The 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array from G-Technology is a high-capacity external RAID that features (2) 7200rpm drives striped together in a hardware RAID 0 configuration. It can be connected to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400 (via adapter cable), or USB 2.0.
The drive is housed in a durable aluminum external casing that features a small and quiet fan for cooling. The stylish drive will look right at home sitting on top of your Mac Pro.
The array delivers transfer rates fast enough to play back multiple streams of high-definition video simultaneously, making it an ideal solution for anything for video editing. The drive will also perform perfectly in high-resolution imaging, data backup, or general storage applications.

As I've intended I use the G-RAID for my photography and videography workflows on both a 24" iMac and 15"MacBook Pro. I am pretty happy with it's really fast start-up timing and no sluggish stream while editing HD content or full res RAW exposures from my Nikons D3 and D3S. To compare, I've been using a OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro 2TB drive for a year now and got a little tired waiting for it to wake up every time I wanted to render some video or save some edits to a photograph. The G-RAID just works.
Not a real concern but just thought I'd throw my two cents to the pile - when transferring large files the G-RAID gets a bit loud, but bearable.
I consider the G-RAID an essential part of a professional workflow and would definitely recommend it to other professionals.

The first drive I bought was dead on arrival. It simply would not mount. I traded it in for another, copied 3 TB worth of information on to it. The next day I tried to mount it and again it would not mount. I exchanged it for yet another one, this time while I was in line, another costumer asked me if I was having mounting problems and he said that the company was bought out and that it is now a re-occurring issue. I got another anyway, re-copied all of my information on to it, and the drive worked fine for about two weeks. Yesterday the drive mounted but said there was a problem it could not repair and that none off the information on the drive could be modified and that the drive needed to be re-formatted. I can't believe how down hill this company has gone, but three drives within a month is unexceptionable. I would not recommend this drive to anyone anymore.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
Crashed a hard drive on a Mac using it to edit so much footage. This is a great drive with RAID features, large size and reasonable price. It also looks great. We ship to clients for them to get footage and they love the look of it as well.

So far so good. I needed another 4TB so I purchased another one. It is not as quiet as I thought it would be after reading other reviews, but not loud either.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
The power switches have been my biggest complaint ever since I started buying G Raid drives. From the two that I had to replace myself early on to the current design which has to be turned on independently each time (GO BACK TO THE OLD SWITCH PLEASE!!!)
Overall they have worked fairly well except for the brand new G-raid Mini that failed on it's first trip to India with 30 hours of HD footage on it.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
The primary use for this G-Raid will be for video production using Adobe Premier but also for file storage of other Adobe suite software files pertaining to my video production/ promotion. I am not an "tech" kind of a user and was a little concerned about hooking the unit up; however, instillation was simple and straight forward. The installation guide was clear and easy to follow. Mine was formatted for Mac and hooked up to the Time Machine effortlessly. I was a little concerned with other reviews I'd read about "noise" and "lack of rocker switch". Both concerns have been found to be groundless. The fan is nearly silent and the only sound is when the drive motor engages. It is certainly no louder than any built in hard drives on tower macs. The lack of a rocker switch is no concern because I simply never turn it off. The unit is run through a power backup so even if I lose power I don't have to worry. Although I have yet to "load it up" it has performed flawlessly so far.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
It did work for 6 months then just stopped during an edit. Yes, I had backed most of the data up, but not all. I know this is my fault but with a drive that is supposed to be the "bees knees" I'm very dissatisfied. Why can't we just buy technology that works!!! G-Technology's support said they would replace the drive, but would not attempt to do any data recovery. Well thanks a bunch for a product that didn't work and a lack of support!!!
I have 13 TB's of other drives including Western Digital, Maxtor, Fantom Drives, and LG which have been running for 5 years without any problems. G-Technology drive - 6 months and quits, big thumbs down.
I Won't be buying another.

I got this beast of a hard drive to use as back up storage for my editing media and at 4TB it gets the job done. It also looks awesome and matches my new Mac Pro perfectly. Looks like they must have designed it with the Apple brand in mind. [...]

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
The design of this unit is great, and the size is cavernous. I use it as a video archive to take some weight off of my internal SATA drives, so the Firewire 800 connection is suitable for file transfer off my MacPro. In addition to my home business, I also use a similar device at my job for video editing, and it works quite well in that milieu.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
I bought the drive and had to send it back a week later because the disk crashed, I tried verifying it in Disk Utilities, then tried reparing it...but it was of no use...had to send it back and get a replacement. This is strange since I've bought a couple of G-Tech drives before and never had any problems. Good thing is that I crashed when I was barely copying stuff on to it, so I didn't loose any files.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
I would have given this drive a much higher rating had I not found that the designer specified a push button switch rather than a rocker switch that could be left in the "on" position so the user can power up all of their peripherals at once. For a videographer with 7 HDs on my desktop this is no minor issue. Also no information on this retro-1980's feature was provided in the product information so that I could make an informed decision prior to purchase.

I'm using it to edit my new documentary on my Alienware M15x through esata port no multiport-aware with dvcpro data from my panasonic Ag Hvx200
+ 1- No esata port cards needed 2- perfect amount of space for a documentary 3- really really fast 4- works out of the box on my Ubuntu 10.10, Windows 7 partitions and my mac. 5- silent and pretty. 6- just cant have more ports
- 1- you are stuck with the amount of space that you buy
