This lens goes perfectly with my Panasonic GF1. At 20mm (40mm equivalent), it is many times faster than my Panasonic 14-45mm micro 4/3 lens at the same focal length and yet still wide enough to be useful for everyday photos. It weighs about the same as the other lens (less than one pound), despite being so compact.

This lens is so much faster than the 14-45mm that you will be able to shoot at ISO 100 what would take ISO 800 or higher with the 14-45mm. It's an excellent lens for indoor lighting and low-light conditions.

The only downsides I have encountered are slight vignetting and slight coma at maximum aperture. Above f/2.0 these minor issues are diminished. Not a big deal.

Note also that the auto focus mechanism makes some noise, which may be audible when taking video with sound. This has not been a problem for me, but YMMV. Manual focusing is an option.

Since Panasonic's other micro 4/3 lenses take 52mm filters, I use a B+W 46mm to 52mm (lens to filter) step-up ring to make this one compatible (you will need to add a 52mm lens cap, of course). I recently switched to B+W filters for the build quality (brass rings!) and the exceptional lens coatings which eliminate flare and are easy to clean.

There aren't too many options for fast primes for micro 4/3rds. This is a nice little compact and lightweight 40mm equivalent that performs similarly to most of the cheap 50mm f/1.8 primes out there at substantially higher cost. On my G2 it tells me to switch out of AF-C into AF-S focus mode when I put it on the camera. The lack of ability to allow continuous focus at shallow DOF makes it much more difficult to get the focus right and thus makes the wide open shooting less effective. However, the quality of the image is reasonably good provided you can get the critical focus at the right point.

The lens is difficult to mount and unmount since it's so short and Panasonic did not give any kind of grippy thing on the barrel to assist with twisting it on. Consequently my fingers slip and I find it more difficult to put on or remove than any lens I've ever owned.

Another, surprising thing for me is that this is the only Lumix lens I've bought thus far that doesn't come with a lens hood. I imagine that's to keep it looking as tiny as possible and because the lens isn't physically long enough to flip the hood around for storage. I imagine the lack of a hood will lead to reduced contrast and a higher level of flare when shooting in heavily side lit situations.

If you have a need for a fast prime in the bag then this is really the only current option. Optically it is superior to the kit lens (14-42) but no where near the Lumix 7-14 or Leica 45 macro.

When another fast prime becomes available I will probably consider it and swap this one out. It does fill a need but doesn't stand out to me in any way other than its diminutive size.

    Tastes Great, Less Filling

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:

OK. So I was a camera store in England and the proprietor raved about this lens. What the heck, its just money so I bought it.

Its everything they say it is. Small, lightweight, crisp results from the superb optics. I was curious if it would work with my Lumix GH1 (another satisfied B&H purchase), especially in the automatic mode.

And, by the rating you'll see it worked seamlessly.

So if you want a good, versatile lens, want to reduce your load in weight and size, this lens fits the bill. Speaking of the bill, it really is a value buy in my opinion. Thanks Panasonic.

Now work on improving your telephoto lens which hasn't fared well in the reviews. Move to this standard and I'd buy that too.

B&H should have a pointer to filters that fit this 20 mm form factor (e.g. UV) to protect the investment. The guide indicates they can get sticky.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:

I had read about how great this small, fast prime lens was, and it was even better than I expected. It has far better image quality than the kit 14-42 lens that came with my E-PM1, and can be used wide open with only minimal loss of quality. Great for low light situations and intimate shots of young children. The focussing isn't as quick as newer m.zuiko mft lenses, but the wide aperture allows for fast shutter speeds to capture kids in action.

While I don't shoot many movies, the noise of the lens focusing is definitely noticeable on video - I would recommend manual focusing if this is an issue.

B&H was fast and easy to deal with. While shipping to Canada via purolator is very economical, they are probably the most incompetent shipping option to Canada - the lens arrived in canada 2 days after I ordered it, but through a series of mishaps with Purolator, I didn't get the lend until a week later! Canadians, keep on top of the shipper or be prepared to wait a bit for your order!

Although its aperture is not as large as 25mm f1.4, its f1.7 is large enough IMO. Besides, for indoor environment, 20mm is more acceptable than 25mm. The color and sharpness are also satisfying. I like my choice.

Now that I've discovered this lens for my GF3 I found myself not reaching for it but keeping it on my camera all the times, as a matter of fact I am selling my kit lens 14-42mm.
small and matches with the camera well also because of the pop-up flash not suitable with long zooms like 45-200mm and even with the kit lens obstructing with flash light somehow. This is a winner and well constructed.
The only con I could see is it doesn't make toast for me in the morning.lol.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:

Since it's introduction since 2009, this pancake lens still remains a hit with micro-4/3 users. Why? because it's small, and incredibly sharp. Only downside I can think of about this lens and the reason why I had to repurchase it recently also comes down to size. My original lens had the misfortune of pealing out of my camera bag on to a stone railing like a loose coin and roll its way into a scum filled pond. That was the end of my relationship with my first lens but not my love affair with this baby. Now that I finally upgraded to my new lumix body, I wanted to make it up with her cuz, boy is this lens beautiful.

She's not the fastest AF lens in the stable anymore but this lens is still in center sharpness next to the Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4. Her slim lithe profile and her other perky friend the 14mm f/2.5 are instant hits. Just keep them out of the hot tub.

I am new to MFT having owned Canon DSLRs and L lenses. I moved to MFT because Canon stuff was too heavy. Was disappointed with MFT zooms so decided to try this prime. It focuses quickly and allows me to use lower ISO for indoors. I am very satisfied with my purchase and the quality of both build and images produced.

This is the best lens I've purchased so far for my E-P1. Sharper than the kit lens, good bokeh, and the size makes the camera much more portable. The only drawback is the noise made by the aperture blades as you focus (it switches from f2.8 in normal view to whatever aperture you've set while focusing). The overall image quality, however, is well worth that small trifle.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:

For under $350 it is a fantastic lens. Can't complain about how sharp it is. Surprised to see very little vignetting and sharp corners on my sample - even wide open though my neighbors sample has softer corners. Make sure to test your lens if you purchase it because there seems to be lots of sample variation. Focus ring feels nice and the dual silver black color looks great.Minus 1 star for the stupid focal length (40mm on micro four thirds - 25mm / 50mm fov equiv. is better) and lack of a lens hood. [@] in Hong Kong offer great aluminium hoods with caps for $10 however.

I read many reviews for this lens all over the internet, but was totally sold when I arrived at B&H. I bought a Olympus PEN E-PL1 and wanted a 20mm lens right away. With a 4/3 camera there aren't many choices out there, so I ordered this one. I think it will be the only lens that stays on the camera from now one. When it arrived I couldn't help by try it out. It is everything the reviews said, and then some. I know that the lens is expensive, but with ordering it from B&H and all the duties (I live in Canada) etc, I was able to save 150 dollars, not only that but it arrived in 10 days, I don't think anything in Canada even arrives that fast. Thanks to B&H for the speeding shipping.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:

The 20mm f/1.7 has replaced my kit 14-42mm lens on my Panasonic Lumix GF2. Its been on my camera for a little over a week and the performance is just amazing, and I don't mind doing my own zooming. It is a very fast lens for low light areas.. Auto focus speed is very good. So far the images are crazy sharp even wide open with some very nice bokeh.Did consider the Panasonic - Leica 25mm f/1.4, but at double the cost maybe later... For now I'm loving the 20mm f/1.7
