The Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G-Series Lens, a Micro Four Thirds system large-diameter wide-angle f/1.7 20mm (40mm in 35mm camera equivalent) manual focus pancake-style lens. The lens operates a unique manual focus system which drives the focusing group indirectly via the lens's autofocus motor. The feel of the manual focus ring remains the same whether the camera is set to auto or manual focus which can be problematic in some shooting scenarios. The advantage is that turning the manual focus ring quickly makes very fast initial adjustments, but then turning it slowly allows very fine focusing.
This lens produces bright photos with a dramatic soft focus even in dimly lit locations. Its compact, easy-to-carry size is also ideal for capturing everyday scenes and snapshots.

This lens goes perfectly with my Panasonic GF1. At 20mm (40mm equivalent), it is many times faster than my Panasonic 14-45mm micro 4/3 lens at the same focal length and yet still wide enough to be useful for everyday photos. It weighs about the same as the other lens (less than one pound), despite being so compact.
This lens is so much faster than the 14-45mm that you will be able to shoot at ISO 100 what would take ISO 800 or higher with the 14-45mm. It's an excellent lens for indoor lighting and low-light conditions.
The only downsides I have encountered are slight vignetting and slight coma at maximum aperture. Above f/2.0 these minor issues are diminished. Not a big deal.
Note also that the auto focus mechanism makes some noise, which may be audible when taking video with sound. This has not been a problem for me, but YMMV. Manual focusing is an option.
Since Panasonic's other micro 4/3 lenses take 52mm filters, I use a B+W 46mm to 52mm (lens to filter) step-up ring to make this one compatible (you will need to add a 52mm lens cap, of course). I recently switched to B+W filters for the build quality (brass rings!) and the exceptional lens coatings which eliminate flare and are easy to clean.

There aren't too many options for fast primes for micro 4/3rds. This is a nice little compact and lightweight 40mm equivalent that performs similarly to most of the cheap 50mm f/1.8 primes out there at substantially higher cost. On my G2 it tells me to switch out of AF-C into AF-S focus mode when I put it on the camera. The lack of ability to allow continuous focus at shallow DOF makes it much more difficult to get the focus right and thus makes the wide open shooting less effective. However, the quality of the image is reasonably good provided you can get the critical focus at the right point.
The lens is difficult to mount and unmount since it's so short and Panasonic did not give any kind of grippy thing on the barrel to assist with twisting it on. Consequently my fingers slip and I find it more difficult to put on or remove than any lens I've ever owned.
Another, surprising thing for me is that this is the only Lumix lens I've bought thus far that doesn't come with a lens hood. I imagine that's to keep it looking as tiny as possible and because the lens isn't physically long enough to flip the hood around for storage. I imagine the lack of a hood will lead to reduced contrast and a higher level of flare when shooting in heavily side lit situations.
If you have a need for a fast prime in the bag then this is really the only current option. Optically it is superior to the kit lens (14-42) but no where near the Lumix 7-14 or Leica 45 macro.
When another fast prime becomes available I will probably consider it and swap this one out. It does fill a need but doesn't stand out to me in any way other than its diminutive size.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:
I am new to MFT having owned Canon DSLRs and L lenses. I moved to MFT because Canon stuff was too heavy. Was disappointed with MFT zooms so decided to try this prime. It focuses quickly and allows me to use lower ISO for indoors. I am very satisfied with my purchase and the quality of both build and images produced.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:
This is the best lens I've purchased so far for my E-P1. Sharper than the kit lens, good bokeh, and the size makes the camera much more portable. The only drawback is the noise made by the aperture blades as you focus (it switches from f2.8 in normal view to whatever aperture you've set while focusing). The overall image quality, however, is well worth that small trifle.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:
For under $350 it is a fantastic lens. Can't complain about how sharp it is. Surprised to see very little vignetting and sharp corners on my sample - even wide open though my neighbors sample has softer corners. Make sure to test your lens if you purchase it because there seems to be lots of sample variation. Focus ring feels nice and the dual silver black color looks great.Minus 1 star for the stupid focal length (40mm on micro four thirds - 25mm / 50mm fov equiv. is better) and lack of a lens hood. [@] in Hong Kong offer great aluminium hoods with caps for $10 however.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:
I read many reviews for this lens all over the internet, but was totally sold when I arrived at B&H. I bought a Olympus PEN E-PL1 and wanted a 20mm lens right away. With a 4/3 camera there aren't many choices out there, so I ordered this one. I think it will be the only lens that stays on the camera from now one. When it arrived I couldn't help by try it out. It is everything the reviews said, and then some. I know that the lens is expensive, but with ordering it from B&H and all the duties (I live in Canada) etc, I was able to save 150 dollars, not only that but it arrived in 10 days, I don't think anything in Canada even arrives that fast. Thanks to B&H for the speeding shipping.

The 20mm f/1.7 has replaced my kit 14-42mm lens on my Panasonic Lumix GF2. Its been on my camera for a little over a week and the performance is just amazing, and I don't mind doing my own zooming. It is a very fast lens for low light areas.. Auto focus speed is very good. So far the images are crazy sharp even wide open with some very nice bokeh.Did consider the Panasonic - Leica 25mm f/1.4, but at double the cost maybe later... For now I'm loving the 20mm f/1.7

As high speed prime lenses go this one is a winner for low light levels and fuzzy backgrounds. It's a great "walking around" lens outdoors. The higher the speed of a lens the better for choosing reasonable ISO's. Three prime high speed lenses for my Olympus E-P3 shooting are the 12mm f:2, the 45mm f:1.8 and now the 20mm f:1.7 Panasonic Lumix lens. All Olympus needs to do is introduce a Micro 4/3's prime f:2.8 longer tele (say, 100mm = 200 equiv) and life will be good. Probably no chance of that since Oly is probably short of money for R&D. There is nothing about this lens not to like.

It's true. Christmas morning can come everyday of the year when using this lens as you get to see the world anew. Everything magical about the world is revealed with the shallow depth of field you've only read about and an aperture you thought possible only in movies. You'll be pretending you're the Hubble telescope in no time with this amazingly compact, clear and affordable lens affixed to the front your SLR.

small and light, substantial build quality. this prime lens is the lens i use more often than any other...my older and higher end FD lenses may offer better quality, but for all round use, the Lumix 20mm is hard to beat.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:
I had been using the Olympus 17mm lens for walking around. But the 20mm Panasonic offers a stop and a half more light with a minimal increase in size.
It's a little slower to focus but on balance it's a fine walking around lens with great bokeh and shallow depth of field.

I have used it with my Lumix GH2, I shoot only video. It gives me exactly what I wanted, which was a narrow focal length that really highlights what is in focus and gives me that film look. Decent in low light with out grain. Don't know what else to say other than I am happy.

This is a great little lens that will fit in any camera bag. If you want a fast lens that enables you to capture low light images without having to use flash, this is a great choice. This lens was recommended to my by a friend to take with me on a trip to meet my new grand daughter. I knew there would be lots of indoor photos being taken and both my friend and I prefer natural light as opposed to flash photography. She has this lens too.

Only not a five star because it's not the "fastest" f out there, would be nice if it was f1.7, but aside from that, really snappy lens, sharp, nice background blurring, so much better for indoor and low light shooting than my f4.5 mega zoom lens.

I recently bought the Lumix G3 along with the kit 14-42 (3.5) and a 14-140 (4.0). Being winter I thought that I might get a 20mm 1.7 so I had a fast lens for the holiday shots of family and could avoid using a flash. I was simply amazed what this prime lens is capable of. In dimly lit rooms I was able to get a 1/60th shutter speed with NO flash. The 20mm being close to normal vision, I was able to walk around the family farm and collect lots of pictures that came out super sharp and all with available light. Keep in mind maybe any fast lens can give you good results, but I am completely satisfied with this lens.

A great little lens for the m43 system. The focal length is a little weird but you get used to it and then it becomes a very useful walk around lens. Sharp with little artifact. My only problems with it are:
1. The lens is quite noisy. The lens is more noisy than the Olympus kit lens when focusing. The aperture also changes according to the light source you point it to. So when you point it at a bright light then to an dark area the lens opens the aperture so it make more noise
2. Focusing it kind of slow but that could also be the EPL1 that I use it on
3. At least on the EPL1 the lens is quite tight to the mount so it take some effort to get it on. The first few times I could hear the metal grinding together
Aside of those three issue I would recommend this lens!

This is one of the best lenses for the Micro 4/3rds system. The kit lens will stay in the bag and may never come out again. I almost got the Zuiko 17mm f2.8 but I'm glad I didnt. I would have ended up upgrading down the road anyways.
Although not as small as the 17mm Zuiko, the profile of this lens definitely makes my EPL2 pocketable and can be brought anywhere.
The f1.7 aperture allows me to not worry about lighting so much anymore and the bokeh is beautiful.
My only issue, a small one at that, is that the Lumix's physical colors dont match the Olympus' black or silver...but who cares!! IT's an f1.7!!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Lens:
I use it for general purpose when I want the lightest, unobtrusive camera for walking around. I love it for situations requiring narrow DOF. For example I am shooting a series of outdoor sculptures and do not want to see the brick building in the background or other annoying objects that interfere with the focus of my subject. The 1.7 is very competent for producing this result. Finally the panasonic 20 mm 1.7 is quiet in operation on my oly E-p3 unlike the 25mm 1.4.
