The 1TB My Passport Essential SE Portable USB Hard Drive from Western Digital is a portable hard drive in a durable housing, great for use with laptop computers. I did away with FAT32 and re-formatted this for my mac so I can transfer HD video on it and use it with my Final Cut Suite. I love this little drive. Its perfect size (like my other passports) while I'm currently on a 2 month road trip, and works like a charm. I have a few of these now and can't say anything back about them. My only 'regret' is that they don't have bigger ones yet. HD video takes up a lot of space and if they made a 10TB in this compact size, I would be thrilled. Other than that, great product. Definitely recommend (& recommend B&H - they rock, though if you're reading this you already know that).

SMALL PACKAGE WITH HUGE CAPACITY!

Excellent little unit with huge capacity! I especially love the fact that it doesn't require an A/C unit. You just simply plug it into your USB and that's it!
The reason I gave it only 3 stars:
- The backup software is completely stupid! Instead of providing custom user options to save specific directories, it scans the HardDrive and categorizes its content. Then you have to select what "type" of content you want to back-up. Music, files, photos, etc. I HATE THIS! I just want to select specific directories instead, but NO SUCH OPTION! COMPLETELY STUPID software!
- The second thing I HATE about it is its unique, own, super-mini USB connection! Standard mini-USB cables won't fit in! So you are always dependent on the original cable that you have to carry with you, instead of only the HD, because your other mini USB cables won't fit into this thing. I can not emphasize it enough just how annnnnnoooooooyyyyyiiiiiinnnnnggggggggggg that is!
Other than these two things, the unit is small, quiet, relatively fast or at least acceptable and won't heat over either.
So, it is a 3 STAR for me!

This is my first external hard drive and so far I am impressed with it. I really like the compact size. Easy to take along and back up photos while on vacation. It's hard to believe that such a small piece of equipment can carry such a big load.

The common problem with this drive is the flimsy USB micro port. Many complaints on the web. My drive stopped working. Light comes on, but Windows won't recognize drive, I bought a new cable - no luck. Tried other computers, no luck. The USB port had become faulty. The second WD hard drive to fail for me in a month (the other inside my laptop). I called support, no help from them either.
Worst of all is this. Once your drive fails, you cannot recover the data on it! This is because the flimsy USB micro port is soldered onto the PCB - there is no standard Sata interface on this drive. Ie no docking station would fit it for recovery. Once the flimsy USB micro port goes, the entire drive goes down the drain.
If you love your data, look elsewhere. The drive is light and small, but it is 'n poor design for which very little support is forthcoming. My drive was less than 6 months old. I am shopping for a more reliable brand.

I use this product mainly for my computer back-up, and for storing important files and documents that should be password protected. The password can be taken out at anytime, so you don't HAVE to use that feature; the only drawback is that the password cannot be recovered. However, it does have a Hint feature, so one should use it wisely. It also has its own computer back-up feature, if you choose not to back up using your operating system. It will show you its progress and is able to continue where it left off should you need to shut down the computer.
It has a micro USB connection and works well with Vista and Windows 7. It is ultra compact, which I love 'cause you can take it pretty much anywhere. It's not heavy at all, it looks great, and has room to store just about everything. I think it would make a great gift for any computer user, beginner or novice.
