When spending up to $800 on a single lens, without a filter, you risk scratching the lens or even cracking if it is dropped. repairing it would cost you hundreds since the most expensive part of the lens is the glass. This filter was in the same B&H.com shopping cart as the 15-85 lens and the lens hood. All three arrived in the same box. The filter should be applied as soon as you get the lens. No ifs, end, or buts! In addition to protecting your lens, it also blocks UV light. What more can you ask for? Hoya has been around for a while and has a good reputation on the photography community. This is one of their more affordable filters.

When investing in a new expensive lens, I thought this was a great way to protect it. Although I haven't dropped the camera yet (thank goodness) I feel somewhat covered using this filter. I haven't really noticed any big difference with my photos while using this lens, but it certainly isn't hurting image quality.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet UV (C) Haze Multicoated Filter:

Hoya HMC UV (C) win against B+W, Marumi or Heliopan.
This filter cuts out the UV radiation the best and has a large visible light transmission (although that 3% value could be a bit less).
The very good balance between price and quality easily convinces us to buy it.
              Very good Cost-to-Benefit.

Little influence on outdoor still images one way or the other--but it protects the front of the lens from dust, sand, salt spray, and other junk you don't want on your lens or gumming up your picture. Less needed indoors and less desirable in artificial light.

These filters are a great insurance policy. They protect the front element of your lense. If something hits the lense it can be extremely costly, if it hits the filter it is only a fraction of the cost to be replaced.

I mostly only purchase a UV filter as an extra layer of protection for my very expensive lens glass, and for this purpose it certainly does the job for very little cost.

I bought this for my Canon 35L and it was put on instantly. I wanted to protect my lens and still get superior optics. Hoya is a GREAT choice in filters. They are made well and the quality is amazing.

I bought two of these for two lenses before going on cruise vacation. Mainly for protection against debris such as salt water deposits. Does as intended for a basic UV filter, which I feel produced a better overall image in bright sunlight conditions. Would buy again.

This filter does what I want it to do: protect the lens and stay out of the way.

Not much more to say except the usual gripe about how expensive filters are.

Primarily used as a lens protector, but it reduces bluish cast to distant scenes and scenic shots too.

The filter is well made and threads on smoothly.
