The Hoya 82mm Ultraviolet UV (C) Haze Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs. The "C" on the filter ring designates Hoya's thinner design for this filter. This filter has its UV properties in the multi-coating.The result is an average light transmission of over 97% giving sharp contrast and well balanced color. Hoya HMC filters are recommended for enhancing the performance of today's multicoated digital lenses.
Multicoated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

If you shoot in sandy, dusty or rainy conditions it would be wise to protect your lens investment. I shoot quite often in an enclosed area full of marble dust and would not even consider shooting without a protective filter. Filters are much cheaper to replace than a $1,600 lens once you do get a scratch .

This filter is a terrible piece of equipment. Smudges are impossible to remove (using either a micro-fiber cloth or a LensPen). After a few minutes of cleaning, it develops a faint cloudy haze on both sides of the filter. Certain little spots on the coating (seen in glare) couldn't be removed at all. It also attracts dust. I have not had this problem with Canon or B+W filters. In addition to this problem, the thin metal ring that holds the glass in the outer ring/threads had a bend in it that allowed the glass to not stay in place. The glass would rattle and rotate when being cleaned. Avoid this product.[...]

Comments about Hoya 82mm Ultraviolet UV (C) Haze Multicoated Filter:
I waited until the last minute to order a new lens, right before I left on a workshop that I needed a wide angle lens. When I opened the UV filter the inside ring was standing straight up. I called B&H, it was past the shipping deadline for the day, but they had it to me the next day. They are the best. I had to borrow one for the workshop, but now that I have used my own, works like Hoya always does. Sure beats worrying you will ruin a $2,000 lens by not having one on.

Not going to touch the filter/no filter thrash with a ten-foot pole.
If you want a filter for lens protection, this one does the trick. No detectable flare whatsoever.

Comments about Hoya 82mm Ultraviolet UV (C) Haze Multicoated Filter:
I ordered one of these to put on a Canon 16-35mm lens. When I opened the lens box, the inner c-ring bounced out, and the glass was loose from the ring. B&H were awesome, and sent me a replacement immediately. The second filter had the same issue. I found with the second one, that I could snap the c-ring back into the filter to hold the glass. It just seemed flimsy and cheap to me. I wasn't willing to put something like this on a $1500 lens. I ended up ordering a higher quality filter from B+W. It was twice the money but seemed twice the quality when I received it. I still gave it three stars, because if I had a less expensive lens, and it had come with the c-ring snapped in place, I probably would have been okay with it. 5-stars to how B&H handled the exchange.

It's an UV filter... what do you expect? It does it's job. I only use Hoya filters. However, sometimes dust gets underneath the filter somehow. I don't know if the threading is weird or something. Either way, Hoya makes great filters.

Comments about Hoya 82mm Ultraviolet UV (C) Haze Multicoated Filter:
This filter is an inexpensive way to protect a $2000 or more zoom lens. No light is lost in transmission, and it filters the UV in the light, expecially imprtant when shooting wide scenic shots or aerials. this should be the first purchase anyone makes when buying a camera with an expensive zoom lens.
