I recently bought the SR-HD1250US Blu-ray recorder, and have been very pleased with its performance. I did at first have some difficulty burning a Blu-ray from imported HDV video from my camcorder. The mode change, that was required for a BD-MV format, was inactive. I discovered the video output from the firewire port on the camcorder was in DV instead of HDV. This down-converted the video to standard definition. A simple menu change on my Canon HV40 changed the output to HD. Re-capturing in HD allowed for the mode change from DR to AF to work. The blu-ray disc then burned without any problems. The quality of the blu-ray is fantastic, as good as the original tape. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that I would have liked the ability to create my own menu backgrounds without having to buy the much more expensive SR-HD1500US. I plan to expand my film and video transfer business with this recorder.

The JVC is the same as the Tascam unit so this review can apply to it also. This is listed as a Blu-ray recorder / DVD / HDD recorder. It works wonderfully for DVD & HDD. Blu-ray recording on this recorder is like the Ten Commandments x 100. Thou Shall Not...Thou Shall Not....Thou Shall Not & finally You Can't. First choose your discs wisely as most will not work in this unit. You cannot record standard def to a blu-ray and have it play back in another blu-ray player. There are no component inputs so you cannot transfar your DVR - HD recordings to BD-R. If you have a BR disc that is not copy protected you can put it on the HDD but not on a BD-R that will play back on a blu-ray player. If you edit HD content from a HD comera it is virtually impossible to put on a disc, and if you can it will not play in standalone blu-ray players. I have never seen such a restrictive machine in my life, especially one that is labeled professional. A waste money.

Comments about JVC SR-HD1250US Blu-ray Disc & HDD Recorder:

I bought a new Sony NX5U and then decided to buy the JVC 1250 so I wouldn't have to edit with a computer. This does not do great edits. A JVC employee spent 5 hrs at my house yesterday teaching me how to use this. He says it does not do "seamless" (clean) edits because of the way this particular Sony cam records AVCHD. He says maybe I'd get clean edits with an upgraded camera. I am not happy. I can't even delete any scenes without video and/or audio noise (audio dropout-mute) at the edit points. If you don't need to do any kind of editing it works okay. I don't know if I will return this unit.

Comments about JVC SR-HD1250US Blu-ray Disc & HDD Recorder:

You can record SD video to Blu-ray discs, but not directly.

Notes: If the origional video is in 4:3 aspect ratio, such as VHS, then first go to "Set Up" and "Record", and change "High-Speed Dubbing" to 16:9. This will maintain the origional aspect with black on the left and right.

          1. Record SD video (from Line 1, DV input, or DVD disc) to the SR-HD1250's hard drive.

          2. Place a BD-RE disc into the SR-HD1250. Using the "Dubbing" mode, record the hard drive file to the BD-RE in XP, or in high speed.

          3. Using the "Dubbing" mode, record the file on the BD-RE disc back to the Hard Drive. At this point the file will be forced to write in HD.

          4. One more time, using the "Dubbing" mode, record the new HD file from the hard drive to a BD-R. You will see a screen where you can change the "Recording Format" to BDMV.

Problems: The SR-HD1250 seems to have no true black level. It is, as if the unit is squashing the dynamics of the Video and Color ranges. Maybe There is a fix for this. If not, then can this machine be called "Professional"? Does anyone know how to maintian the dynamic Video and Color ranges on this machine?

Comments about JVC SR-HD1250US Blu-ray Disc & HDD Recorder:

We bought 2 units for the HDD function to use as a backup to On The Fly DVD recording. Events are from 2 hours to 2 days, so no worry if a program segment runs longer than the anticepated DVD speed. And we can burn the entire event onto 1 bluray disc for archival storage. Will purchase more to phase out our old JVC VHS/DVD recorders.

We have found JVC to be developing the right combination features & quality that keeps us coming back for more products.

I video tape lengthy Dance Shows with a Hi Def camera. In the past I used a computer which was a long set up and nerve racking. Now I plug in my camera to the JVC hard drive and hit record. Quality is great, and copies to DVD or Blu-ray are excellant. Editing of footage takes some practice but results are great. This is a quality machine.

This professional Blu-ray recorder is a fine way to burn HD video and maintain the quality. It does require a learning curve and possibly a few waisted blank media to learn all the functions. This was recommended by B&H and I'm happy with the quality of the unit.

Comments about JVC SR-HD1250US Blu-ray Disc & HDD Recorder:

I use the Product to transfer my images from my new HD camcorder to a Blu-Ray Disc. Works like a charm, you can edit and take out what you do not want.
Image quality is exceptional, even with a copy of a DVD.
You can use this product with an SD card, and also transfer images through S-VIDEO or the normal RCA plugs. I-Link and USB plug.
The machine is limited to the only use of DVD-R for transfer or Copy Video.

All media MUST go to the hard drive before being burned to DVD or Blu-Ray. The menu system is difficult to navigate.
