The Canon Battery Grip BG-E7 is an optional battery grip designed specifically for the Canon EOS 7D. It allows users to load a choice of one or two LP-E6 battery packs (not included). With two packs, the already impressive battery life is doubled, compared to using a single LP-E6 pack in-camera. This is especially useful when taking advantage of the camera's movie mode or Live View mode - operating modes that use more power. In addition, with the included battery magazine you can alternatively also power the camera off six AA batteries.

Furthermore the BG-E7 provides full vertical shooting controls, which can be independently turned on or off as the photographer needs to enhance camera handling, especially for shooting vertical pictures.

Note! Does NOT include any batteries

I've always read that the battery grip is a must have for any and all dSLR's. Not to say I didn't believe this, but I just could not decide if it would be worth it or not. Turns out, it is completely worth it. Here are some of my reasons why.

|Batteries| With the ability to hold two batteries my shooting time has greatly increased, to the point where I don't even need to worry when shooting throughout an entire day. The AA battery pack is a welcoming feature should anything go wrong in the field. Even the little details like the battery door cover holder is a nice touch. Obviously, the grip is a must have if you are or plan on shooting video.

|Grip| Like all grips, it screws into the tripod mount and is a very snug fit. There is no play between the grip and the body and a slight amount (a centimeter or two) of play with the tightening wheel (does not effect anything). It consists of the same materials of the 7D so continuity of feel is not lost when switching between landscape/portrait modes. I wanted to see how it held up on a tripod, so I loaded up the 7D with grip, 70-200 f/4 IS and a 420ex flash for kicks. With my manfroto ball head it didn't budge one bit. I wanted to see if the grip would flex at all and it certainly did NOT. There is simply a solid feel to the grip, and a very secure feeling when carrying around without a strap. There is of course added weight, but not to the point where it has become uncomfortable for me. It's like a 'manly' weight, when switching from, say, plastic razor handle to a stainless steel handle; the added weight makes it seem more comfortable (tried to make it relative for women as well :) )

|Buttons| One of the more common comments I read about this grip is the shutter button and its sensitivity. It IS more sensitive than the 7D's button. It's hard to put it into words, but there is less of a 'feel' between starting AF and taking the shot. If you have AF-start set to a different button this won't matter to you. I became used to the sensitivity about 3/4 through a day of shooting with switching back and forth between the to shutter buttons. As seen in the photos, it has all of the buttons to fully take advantage of shooting in portrait mode vertically. Another common comment I read is that some people were not able to reach the large clickwheel on the 7D. From the base of my palm to the tip of my middle finger is ~7"; base of my palm to tip of thumb is ~5". I am able to reach the clickwheel with a good 1/2" of my thumb without adjusting my hand wrapped around the grip. Otherwise it's a simple adjustment of the palm to use it. The only drawback for me at this point is there is simply no way to reach the joystick on the body. I use this for picking my focus point and am using it very often. For now I've been holding the camera by the lens in my left hand and taking my hand off the grip and adjusting it (not very practical). The other option for this is to press the focus point button (whichever you had it assigned to) and use both clickwheels to adjust.

I'm a very detailed guy, so hopefully this information will help you in purchasing this grip. I tried to answer the questions I had when considering buying this grip, with as many details as possible. I'm wondering how I have gone this many months without this grip.

Canon battery grip's will be purchased with all future camera bodies, no question about it!

I'll divide my review into two separate parts, one about the product itself and the other about it's functionality.

Whoever is looking for buying a battery grip I believe that main issues are whether or not it's worth the investment and choosing among brands.

First of all I decided to buy it to extend battery life by adding an extra one and also have more comfortable vertical grip. I chose Canon branded grip even though it's more expensive than others. I wanted to have the have best quality gear because I use it for work, so my advice is that if you have to rely on your gear you must spend a "little" more and go for Canon. If you're an enthusiast and don't use it on a daily basis it's ok to go for the other brands.

The grip itself gets the job done, 2 batteries really last forever! It feels solid and reliable. One small issue is that when you attach the grip to the camera, the spinning wheel that tightens the screw stays a little loose after it's fully attached.

Now explaining my 3 stars for this grip. It's clear to me that Canon did not put any effort or investment on developing this grip. When you hold the 7D the grip is very nice and well designed, but with the battery grip, it's so bulky that you can't reach the some of the controls on the back of the camera and the thumb doesn't sit properly.

About shooting with vertical grip it's not as better as I thought it would be. I've never had a grip before and shooting vertically never bothered me. I know it's probably just a matter of time to get used to shooting with battery grip, but first impressions is that it doesn't help or make a big difference in comfort. Actually the front part of the grip get's in the way of properly holding some of my lenses.

I'm not fully disappointed with the product itself but its functionality, even though I still think that Canon should have put more effort in developing the ergonomics.

In conclusion, having the battery life extended is the main benefit brought for me, which is great. The issue I'm facing is that since battery life was the main, if not only, benefit, why buying a battery grip, which is so expensive, when I could just have bought a couple more batteries and have them in my pocket while working? Well, think about that if you are in trouble deciding.

Hope to have helped you guys.

Good clicks to you all!

Much better build than the lower cost versions and the grip feels and flows much better with the Canon 7D that I am using it on. I have had a battery grip with every digital camera I have bought. The battery life has never let me down and the ability to hold the camera sideways for Portraits has made it a must have.

Comments about Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip:

I wanted a battery grip for my 7D almost from the moment I bought one last October. I found I was shooting so many pictures in an outing that the battery was out of power. I had a back up battery, but the grip seemed like a more refined way to upgrade. I ordered my grip from Canon overseas (made in Japan) and it arrived (slowly) in a Canon box and it is beautiful. The same build quality (titanium), weatherproof and it matches the 7D perfectly. Now, with two battery packs it is heavy and the camera feels awesome, but slightly cumbersome. At the local zoo one of the employees in the bird section said it was the largest camera she had seen anyone bring to the zoo. It made me feel good, but that was not the intention when I added it to the 7D. My arm was a little tired, but I did not run out of power after a thousand RAW shots. And I can swap the axis when using the grip shutter button for better framing. I am completely satisfied with this grip. I looked at many others.

Comments about Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip:

One thing I love about this grip is that the quality is very good. I love how it work with the camera and you when you use it a couple of time, you didn't notice about it anymore. I thought it was a regular battery and it comes with the camera because it fit that good to look like the camera part. All the button are easy to locate and easy to use so I have to say that it is an amazing battery grip and I'm glad I didn't buy to velo brand.

Recently, I bought the Canon 7D and ordered the Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip from B&H. The grip is flawless and extremely well built meeting my expectations of Canon gear. As a bonus, Canon included the AA 6 battery grip-adapter which comes in handy when the normal batteries need recharging. B&H Photo delievered the Grip and the extra battery I ordered on time, as usual.

If you are one of those 'run & gun' video people like I am, you have to have this addition. The extra weight keeps it steady, and the battery life is a must to keep the LCD screen going.

I could only find two cons about this product and those is that the shutter button on the grip is a little bit to sensitive. and the there is no halfpress. and that it is a little bit to pricey.

This is a great addition to an excellent camera. The Grip is very sturdy and well built. It functions great and the added battery life by having 2 is such an excellent advantage. I agree that the shutter is a bit more sensetive than the cameras, but it's really not that bad. Makes the camera look more professional as well.

Comments about Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip:

The grip works just like advertised. Photographed a 5K run and all shots were vertical so the grip came in handy. Had one problem but not with the grip. I kept missing the viewfinder with my eye. When I raised the camera, my eye automatically went to the top of the camera (in the veritcal positon) and there was no viewfinder to look through.

Comments about Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip:

It complements the 7D perfectly, specially those persons with large hands. I bought an after-market cheaper 7D battery grip that in less than a year began to malfunction and made the camera shoot pictures sporadically. Bought the Canon brand and the difference in construction and aesthetic fit is undiscribable. It is well worth the price and indeed made for the 7D. It is not made of flimsy plastic.

Comments about Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip:

I didn't want to buy any other grip for my 7D, so I bought the Canon BG-E7. It feels solid and it makes shooting vertically very comfortable and natural.

This grip is staying on my 7D on weddings!

                                        Highly Recommended!!

I run battery grips on all my DSLRs, and this one is my favorite. There is rubberized grip surface all over, and the rest of the finish matches the 7D very well. It is comfortable to hold. The shutter release does have slightly less resistance than the one on the camera body, but it's not bad. The only thing I find myself wishing for is a multi-selector on the battery grip.
