The 2009 Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder (Brushed Metal) captures up to 120 minutes of 720p high definition video to an 8GB built-in memory. With the MinoHD there's no complicated menus to navigate and no settings to fuss with. And, because the camera is small enough to fit in your pocket you can take it anywhere to capture life as it happens.
The MinoHD has a fixed focus lens (2x digital zoom) that makes recording as easy as it gets - just point-and-shoot. You'll compose and playback your videos on the 2 inch LCD, and hear all the audio through the built-in speaker. When you feel like getting in the scene yourself, or just need a super-steady shot, the tripod mount allows you to secure the camcorder to a tripod for hands-free recording.
Once you've recorded and you're ready to share those videos with the world, connect the built-in USB arm to your computer - Mac or PC. The MinoHD is compatible with both operating systems and will launch the built-in FlipShare software as soon as the computer recognizes that the camera is connected. The FlipShare software lets you upload, edit, and share all your videos either through email or on social networking sites like YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace. You can even capture still images from video using the software. When you feel like watching all your footage on an HDTV, simply connect the camcorder via the mini HDMI connection (cable optional).

I recently bought two Mino HD pocket cameras. One was for my fiancee and the other was for me. I figured this would be a great little camera to have with me at all times, never know when a cool shot or two will appear.
I was really surprised with the quality of this thing. Picture quality looked like true HD, even on a large LCD television. The image stabilization is pretty decent, but no question this camera perfoms best when it is NOT moving. This may have to do with the nature of interlaced frames. Whatever the case, when the camera moves, it looks OK, but when its on a tripod, it looks GREAT.
Form factor is give and take. This camera is VERy small. probably smaller than your cell phone. This means you can put it just about anywhere and get some pretty cool shots out of it that you just wouldnt be able to get from an average handicam. That said, it's not the most ergonomically amazing camera ever. It feels like a cell phone in your hand. This is actually a pretty minor problem.
You cant find an easier-to-use camera. Period. One button fuctionailty. Its automatically set to focus from zero to infinity, and the exposure is also automatic. ANYBODY could use this thing.
I also own an Aiptek A-HD handicam, which I suppose can be considered an alternative. The Aiptek has more "manual" controls (the flip has NONE), but on just about every other level, the Flip blows the Aiptek out of the water. Better picture quality, MUCH better audio.
I primarily use this for video storyboarding when I'm scouting a location before a production, and during production it goes into a PA's hand as a Behind-The-Scenes camera. Its great for that.
Here are the cameras shortcomings-
DIGITAL ZOOM - This is my biggest gripe. Digital zoom is worthless. there isnt a thing you can do with digi-zoom that you cant do in your editiing program. All it does in stretch the frame, causing the image to lose quality.
NO AUDIO-IN - The audio quality from the onboard mic is decent. I know though, that there are competitor cameras that DO have a small audio-in jack.
USB ARM - Hasnt failed on me yet, but it just doesnt feel solid enough to plug in to a computer or laptop without the USB extension cable.
With those three things adressed, really this camera would be aboout fit for semi-pro work. I've seen movies made with these things, and if you REALLY know how to work with its basic design and run a seperate audio system, you can make some pretty excellent stuff with it. DEFINETLY a great creative tool to have on hand at all times.

The product is extremely straightfoward to use. Point at what you want to film. Press the red button to start and again to stop. The device is lightweight and easy to carry. The sound quality of the built-in microphone is good. The video quality is better than I could shoot with my mini-tape based camera but not outstanding. More than adequate for home movies of kids and events. I was pleasantly surprised with the low light capabilities of the camera (though the noise is very noticable as the ISO goes up to compensate).
Drawbacks - only a 2x zoom means that you need to get pretty close to the action. It's very easy to bring up the delete video option (although you need to press a separate button to confirm the deletion). The software that the Flip comes with is very basic and will force you to allow a Facebook application to work if you want the seemless upload capabilities. I would be nice if the camera allowed you to select a lower quality video capture because not everything requires HD (and the corresponding file size). You have to take your computer with you because the only way to recharge this is through the built in USB port.
Overall a decent product that definitely has its place for people wanting to capture snippets of life. I'd recommend it as long as you understand its limitations.

Comments about Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder (Brushed Metal):
I've owned a minoHD in the past, but lost it. :( Searching around the web for a replacement[...]. I took the flip to London and recorded Guns N' Roses play at the O2 Arena and the sound quality is the best I've ever heard on any camcorder. And the size of it makes it so conveniently portable. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. [...]Only thing I wish Mino would fix is the offer some stabilization better zoom in/out. Sometimes you can't fit everything in front of you onto the screen, but those are minor things considering everything else.

Comments about Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder (Brushed Metal):
I use the camara for my college students to do interviews and we edit them and put them on DVD. The students find it easy to use and many of them really plan ahead and shoot the interview very professionally. Number one I love how the camara looks and how small it is. I have an earlier model of the Flip and the new flip seems to have a better quality picture and is actually easier to use. With the older model the zoom was harder to use and I would accidently turn off the recording when I tried to use it. So far I have found nothing I don't like about the camara.

Great quality image bit doesn´t have a michrphone output and the inbuilt mic is not very good.
Zoom is very limited and doesn´t work well -slow and sometimes just doesn´t work.

Wow. Never did I think that something so small could produce something so good! If you're looking for a quick and easy way to take your videos, upload them, AND enjoy them in high definition, this is definitely the one for you. The design is sleek, fits nice in your pocket and you don't even know it's there. The mini HDMI works great when I hook it up to my Plasma and the picture is incredible. For the price and for the quality, this one should get 10 stars!

Comments about Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder (Brushed Metal):
Great compact size, ease of use and picture quality. The one improvement would be to add a microphone jack so that you could "mike-up" a subject. If they're more than a few feet from the camera, the sound quality suffers.

I use it primarily to shoot brief training videos for church volunteers. I love that it goes in my pocket, that I can use it without needing another person, and the quality is excellent for what I use it for. I wish it had better documentation (a manual) and that you could lower the resolution. Loading a 4 minute video to YouTube takes an hour and that's in my office with a high speed connection.

I will use this around our property for snakes and javelina that just show up and would be fun to have on film. It's also fun to shoot our cats doing crazy things. It's small, light weight and easy to use. But to charge the battery in the external plug it must be balanced very carefully against the wall or it falls out. It did not come with the external plug so that was an additional charge here in Tucson. I also wish the lens had a cover - it does not and I think that will be a problem later if it gets scratched.

Comments about Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder (Brushed Metal):
I just received mine in the mail about 3 weeks ago, and I haven't found anything good about this product yet. I'm leaving for Germany in 2 weeks and I thought this camera would be very handy for the vacation. To my disappointment, it didn't work out of the box. I set everything up, but then it froze. I read that the only way to restart the camera, was to insert the end of a paper clip at the base of the unit. 1) I would never expect this from a brand new product. 2) When I'm traveling in another country, the last thing I need is a paper clip.
So now that the camera works half the time (as long as a I have a paper clip handy), it won't read properly on the software on my computer. It imports the video's into the software, but when I try to play it back, it only gives me the audio. No video. And just to top it off, the software crash's about 95% of the time when I'm trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong. I'm not the smartest guy on the planet, but I am a web programmer and I know it's not my computer.
I'll be sending this product back asap.

It's very easy to use, and very handy to carry, but I'm not thrilled with the quality of the video. Maybe it's a function of the mp4 format, but the video playback is not nearly as smooth as my old tape camcorder.

This camera is the best! Compact, great image and audio, simple controls! I really have nothing negative to say about it. I doubt if I will ever use the entire available 120 minutes but it's nice to know the option exists! I was able to shoot some video on vacation and watch it on my HDTV using an HDMI cable. After I watched the raw footage is was a breeze to use the flip out USB to hook it to my iMac and download the video straight to iMovie. I was originally considering the Flip UltraHD but a friend who has that model recommended the MinoHD due to the rechargeable lithium ion battery versus having to use two traditional batteries.

Bought this for my wife and I find myself using it more. The picture is great in good lighting and fits in my pocket. Doesnt do so well with poor lighting. Plus the software for my MAC is so easy to use, you plug the Flip in and click "Save to computer" and thats it, DONE!
