The Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens is designed for the new Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens with Image Stabilization. The ring holds the lens more securely than if the camera is mounted on the tripod. Made of a lightweight metal that matches the color of the lens (black), the mount ring is very helpful in extreme close-up photography, where the slightest vibration will show up in your photo.

I purchased this from B&H when it was new (and still hard to get at the time).
NOTE: I'm using a Gripped Body and a Tripod w/ quick release lever (not a ball head).

A) Back of mount is too close to the thread; in order to use it (quickly), I need to attach/mount it to the tripod plate first THEN mount the camera to the ring. Works perfectly after that... [if I try mounting the ring on the lens/camera first, then the quick release lever hits the base of the gripped camera and prevents the tripod/camera combo from locking in place].

B]This may just be my production model, but when the ring is not on the camera, it locks together/closes perfectly with no gaps; but when I put it on the lens, the connection has a gap - I have to tighten it further than when no lens is mounted because I get the feeling it will slip apart. (IE - it may be just a couple cm too small for the lens).

Overall it serves its purpose (vertical/horizontal shooting quickly with only a twist of a nob). But note, the lens is not heavy, so you don't really need this for mounting to the tripod on account of lens weight or balance, and if you have an "L" bracket on your camera body (e.g. ARCA) you also don't need this ring.

Lastly, I agree with everyone else who notes this should be part of the lens package; and by itself is priced higher than its usability value.

(Heaven's did they only produce 1,000 of these? that might warrant a high price - why not offer a limited edition number to boot? just kiddin')

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens:

This product provides a stable support for the EF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM lens. There were no problems with attaching the lens with mounting ring attached directly to a Canon 50D MkII outfitted with with Battery Grip BG-E6 (despite warnings of clearance issues in the Macro lens user guide).
Although this product is expensive, the build quality is excellent, and is a worthy addition to a high quality lens such as this. Certainly the option to mount the lens directly to a tripod to help offset the size and weight of the 50D Mk II and Battery Grip combination offers added flexibility and shooting options for close-up and copy work.
I would highly recommend this product.

You need the center balance provided by the Tripod Ring D on the Monopod and Tripod when taking Macro photos. This provides the balance.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens:

For those of you with a Canon 100-400 or 70-210, how much did you pay for the mount ring on those lenses? Zero. This is the equivalent of paying [$] for a proprietary lens cap. This ring should be in the box with the lens. It is useful for switching quickly from landscape to portrait, but I could easily do without it. Mount your camera directly with this light lens, and make better use of your money elsewhere.

Works perfectly - the only wish I have was that it had center markings, for leveling the lens, like the 70-200 2.8 IS lens and ring - otherwise it's a must have.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens:

Need it for when I mount the lens on a tripod and want to shoot portrait-orientation (and be able to adjust the horizon quickly and easily).... but I think it's overpriced.

It doesn't fit very snug (I'm used to the collar for the new 70-200), and feels plasticly cheap.

To the reviewer worried about completely closing with out lens, and closing with a slight "gap" when on lens: The ring is not supposed to completly close, with no gaps. The slight gap allow you to adjust tension.

I Rate it 5 stars for quality, 1 star for price. This tripod ring costs about 50% more than previous Canon tripod rings I've purchased. Thus it's 3 star rating.

The product works as it is intended and is very good build quality. With that said I would NOT waste the money on this product. It is way to expensive for what it is and is not at all necessary due to the fact that the lens is extremely light. Save your money for something that will be of far more use.

                    Great Canon quality.
                    Very rugged and well built.
I felt the price was a bit too high, but what can you do on an item like this except pay the price if you want one or need one.
Mounted on a ballhead tripod with my Canon 50D and the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS Macro Lens it feels comfortable and easily manuvered, but the balance seemed a bit off which is not the tripod ring's fault. Anyway it works great and serves its purpose very well.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens:

It's the only tripod mount ring by Canon that works on the 100mm f2.8 macro IS L.
                      1. Only problem is that if you are using a Canon 1 series or anything with a vertical/battery grip, there's a chance that mounting it to the tripod requires that you attach the camera first, then mounting the camera to the lens. There's very little space between the mount ring to the grip.
2.Need to buy an extra ring to be able to use the two Canon's macro light (the MR or the MT).
But this is the only "option"...

The Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro IS lens was going to be my first full macro lens. I bought it as it had the tripod ring mount listed as an accessory.I waited 6 months for Canon to catch up with delivery of the ring but it was worht it. Fits and works perfectly What else is there to say.
