The Canon EW-78E Lens Hood is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the hood is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. This dedicated lens hoods is designed for the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens.

I always keep a lens hood on lenses. They are less expensive than even the cheapest filter and they provide a few more inches of separation between the front element and disaster without effecting the image quality. The Canon lens hoods are high quality and the EW-78E is the traditional bayonet style so it's secure on the lens, doesn't impact any filters that you do use and they're reversable for transport. The EW-78E is also wide enough to get your fingers in to remove the lens cap. It's just a shame Canon doesn't include them with the higher priced EF-S lenses like they do with the L series.

I went all out an got a Canon EF-S 15-85 lens for my Canon XSi camera. I wish the lens hood was included with the lens, but it is not. I have found lens hoods to really help reduce stray light from hitting the lens, and protects the lens from damage. Given the cost of the Canon EF-S 15-85, I sprang for the Canon brand lens hood rather than try an off label brand which was only slightly less expensive. You really need a lens hood for a lens of this quality. If you go Canon or off label is up to you.

Although this costs more than the "knockoffs" It works and fits well. I figure if I spend $$ on lenses, why not get the optimal images and protection of a genuine Canon lens hood.

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
If you are shooting with the Canon EF-S 15-85mm USM lens, this is a must-have accessory. It noticeably reduces and controls vignetting (as in I don't see any; without the hood vignetting is an issue), and as a plus with all lens hoods adds an extra barrier of protection between the glass and a potential accident.
However for the price of the lens, Canon should be including this hood with it (Canon only includes lens hoods with their L-series glass).
I am relatively new to the world of SLRs and photography, and in the short time I have owned this hood, I am very satisfied with it.

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
I've tried other hoods. They are ok, but quality of the canon brand is un-mistakable! Is it worth the premium price? To me it is, to others, it may not. But I do know you won't be disappointed with the quality!

Especially liked the fabric covering the insdie surfaces of the lens hood as this will absorb light and prevent it from bouncing around.

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
This lens hood fits my Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens perfectly, is easy to attach and remove, and I have no problems with using it with filters and the lens cap.
Does not seem to have the fingerprinting or scratch issues of earlier versions.
The only reason I am deducting a star is it is too expensive - and should have been included with my lens. Shame on Canon for nickel and diming us this way.

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
I bought this hood for my Canon 15-85 IS USM lens. Fits well and does the job as expected. I haven't done any testing as to how much exactly the hood improves the picture, and I am just using it whenever I can. Also from my previous experience I am finding that a hood works well as extra protection for the lens.

This is the most aggravating thing about Canon. Why do they not include the hood with all of their lenses. Who takes pictures outdoors without one?

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
I wish it came with the lens, but it's relatively cheap insurance. I'm someone who always wants a hood on my lens....prefer it to a protective filter and am willing to take my chances.
Can't compare it to the third party brands, but the Canon has a really nice, solid build and great, solid "click in" with the lens.

Great hood fot my 15-85 lense. I think it is a worth the extra money over the non Canon ones. However, it is true that it is still an expensive item for what it is, a piece of plastic. Be it as it may, [...].

Fitment far exceeds that of an off-brand lens hood. Tried to go the cheap route the first time around & found out the hard way that I should have bought this one to begin with.

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
Works well for landscape and flash photography. Has a firm grip to the lens and is reversable which was the main reason for buying. Not being able to store hood and lens together is irritating. Only gave it 4 stars due to the expense. Otherwise the construction and build are excellent.

Comments about Canon EW-78E Lens Hood:
I use it on the Canon EF-S 15-85mm. It fits like a glove and reverses to store nicely on the end of the lens. I can still use the flash and I don't see the hood in the images when the lens is opened up.
