Comments about MemoryKick 500GB Media Center SI (Black):
I'm incredibly frustrated with this product. It stopped working after only 2 weeks for no reason. After 2 full 10-12 hours charges it finally started working again but it did not back up my memory cards. The screen goes blank very often. When I tap on the dial to display the screen, the back-up stops and I have to re-start it again. I thought that the memory kick is programmed to only back-up new images on your memory card but that does not seem to be the case. When it does work and backs-up the memory cards, it saves everything again so I have to go back and clean the folders by deleting the ones containing images that have already been saved. The UI is not intuitive at all. If I need to rename a folder it takes forever to "type" something by using the dial. Also I have not been able to find a way to rename all photos in a foldr in one go. I can only rename the folder. If I want to give a title to all the photos within that folder I have to do it one by one. The battery life is very short and it is definitely not how it is described in the product manual. I was trying to back up a 4GB CF card with raw images on it and the batteries went out even though I started the back-up on a full charge. In their defense I have to say that when I contacted technical support they replied within a couple of hours with extensive instructions on how to re-format the [*] machine, except that, fi you don't have your own PC (e.g. when you're traveling) you can't do any of the things they tell you to do in the instructions. I also tried to reformat the drive by following the instructions in the manual (inserting a microscopic pointy object into the tiny hole on the side of the memory kick) and that too did not do anything. No matter how many times I tried I could not hear the "click" and nothing happened. For a product that costed [$] and that is advertised as the best backup option in the industry I'm extremely disappointed and I find the advertising to be almost deceiving.

For obvious reasons, bought to back up when traveling without taking laptop and went for this model due to the screen size and actually seeing the image.
After charging, the unit kept freezing and i needed to keep re-booting. Seems that other users reviews have experienced the same problem.
Also, be very careful when inserting/removing the SD cards as one of the pins in the unit bent and i had to fiddle with it and now am very careful when using it.
Since all this, i have not used it much and recently took my mac when traveling and despite the extra weight, was worth the hassle.
Download speeds are ok (not particularly fast) its a bit slow and clumsy to use and the screen resolution is not great at all (Grainy and looks like shooting ISO 6400) so you can only tell the keepers using your camera screen and not this at all.
Had there been a decent review explaining the above, i would not have bought it and i live in the Middle East so by the time i used it, was not able to return it.
For serious/pro photographers avoid..I would highly recommend another solution.

The MemoryKick was tempting for large volume memory back-up for a 3 week wildlife trip. I've used an Epson P6000 before, very pleased but where I'm going a laptop is not an option, so I tried the MemoryKick. First impression was that it appeared flimsy and the whole set-up was not intuitive. The displayed image was grainy and made the Epson look like a high definition TV screen. I sent it back, replacing it with another Epson, a P7000. The only downside to the Epson is the inability to easily transfer files to another external hard drive without a computer or reformatting to FAT32.

Traveling overseas. Hate hauling a laptop. Need to travel light as possible. I plan to copy compact flash cards to this drive each day and then backup at night to external usb drive. Just did some tests. I found that copying compact flash to this product's internal drive is fast, BUT backing up to external usb drive is super slow and impractical for my use. It's taking approximately two (2) hours to backup 16GB. I need to offload approx 64gb each night.

I bought this product before heading for a 3 months trip in Africa. It served me well during all my living there. I saved me the need of carrying a laptop, and also was used as a movie player and a mp3 player during my time there. It is a bit heavy compared to regular 2.5'' hdd, but despite this face - it's just one of my best buys for the trip.

I bought this product for a trip of 3 months to Africa. I figured out that i can't trust on their computers, and need my own portable device.
After a long survey of the compatible products, the 2 finalists were the hyperdrive and the memorykick SI.
Definitely, the memorykick Si is the winnder - faster, has more options, can be used as a USB to go, Play movies, and the most important - be used just as a regular HDD - unlike the HyperDrive.
If you still have any doubts, forget about them, and buy this amazing device.
Moreover, i had some technical questions, and got help in less than 24 hours from their tech support.

I purchased one as soon as they came to replace a broken Delkin PicturePad. Beautiful screen, FAST download from cards and good battery life. Found a software bug with one version of CF card that I had and received a QA'd version of the fixed software in under a week! WOW!

Comments about MemoryKick 500GB Media Center SI (Black):
I've had multiple digital storage units including Delkin, Databank and others. I generally ended up carrying a laptop since I wasn't happy with either performance, screen size or raw support. This device changed my mind. I've tested it with 4 different Canon raw formats, multiple models of three different storage cards (SD, CF and MS) and it works as advertised. It is FAST to transfer (the gating factor is the speed of your card) and raw support for me is excellent. I bought the product at launch and found a bug in how the software handled 8 gig CF cards. The developers had a fix in my hands in 72 hours that worked flawlessly - I was amazed and thrilled.
