The AirPort Extreme Base Station from Apple is a compact Internet router with powerful wireless capabilities. The router allows you to share your Internet connection between several computers via the draft 802.11n wireless protocol. It also features three standard 10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The router is also fully backwards compatible with legacy 802.11a/b/g devices. A USB port is present for printer and hard disk sharing.
The router also features a firewall to protect you from malicious software that can attack your computer from the Internet, as well as wireless security to insure that your data remains private. It includes configuration software for both Mac OS X and Windows, making it a true cross-platform solution.

I recently switched over to an iMac and iPad and wanted a well designed 11n router. I've read very good reviews of the quality of the AirPort, especially for Apple devices.
The set up (like most Apple products) is very easy. Note that I used a Mac to set it up so I don't know how it would be for an all Windows environment. You install the software provided on a CD and then run the AirPort Utility. Set up some basic controls and voila, you are up and running. And it looks elegant.
It has two bands (5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz) so I can split my wireless devices. All the apple stuff goes on the 5 Ghz and my Wintel laptop and 2 Tivos connect to the 2.4 Ghz. Built in WEP, WPA, WPA2. The configuration seems much easier to me that my old Netgear and Linksys router admin pages (http://192.168.1.1).
Drawbacks? Nothing that I can really think of. It only has 3 ethernet ports instead of the usual 4. Doesn't really affect me as everything is wireless anyways. The signal strength (like all routers) is usually less than the advertised range so bear that in mind. The signal for us dropped off big time after about 50 - 60 feet.
Another really awesome thing is your wireless network can easily be extended by adding an Airport Express device. Extending it is very very easy to configure. I put one about 50 feet (right before the signal drop-off) and now that area of our home has a great signal. It took a minute to set up.

My main reason for buying this product was to be able to connect and use one printer with all my PCs. [...]Printing from my XP PC works without a problem. It is the PC my wife uses and I would have had double trouble if she could not have printed her greeting cards, etc. I can still sleep at night.Printing from my Laptop and Desktop PCs does not work properly. After printing barely one page of a document the printing goes "south", you name it. I have spoken to Apple and Epson (RX680 Pinter) to arrive at a printer problem solution. They were not able to help. May be it is a Windows 7 problem, I have not spoken to Microsoft.I do have to give the Airport Extreme some credit. It performs well (and may be faster) using the internet and E-mail. I also like the 'Guest Password' feature.I did not accomplish printing from all PCs, the main reason for buying this Router. However, I am going to hold on to it for it's other values.

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
This is a great wireless router. Setup is a breeze and it has extreme high quality but what else would you expect from Apple. Even allows you to connect a printer wirelessly via USB. Very secure. Can't think of anything wrong with it besides always wanting something faster but that can wait for the next new model. Pretty fast already!

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
The Airport Extreme has a pretty decent range, it's fast and has never dropped my internet connection like many other routers I've used before. It's easy to set-up and hassle free. I have seven devices connected to this one router wirelessly with no affects on signal strength or speed.

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
The extreme base station has the strength to keep all computers on line, unlike the router that was replaced.

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
We've been using apple wireless products for years, in fact they last for years. We are replacing a very old airport (saucer shape) after many years of reliable service - far beyond its life expectancy.
The Extreme almost set its self up, and it would have if I had known the IP password (which turned out to be my last name).
I can't think of anything bad about it since I've been using the same product in my office for the last 5 years without a glitch!

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
I rec'd my new wireless router & it only took me about 20 minutes to set everything up, including 2 home computers & a wireless printer! It showed me step by step instructions, and walked me thru the whole process! My other router was never set up properly, and I had to pay someone for that! This was super-easy & I have yet to have any issues with my Internet usage! Love it!

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
The router works very well, especially if you have Macs (though it works fine on PCs, too).
Instead of managing everything through a web browser, you manage it from a dedicated application. That makes the setup and management very easy.
The extreme doesn't have as many bells and whistles as a Linksys with custom firmware (like DD-WRT), but it has everything mere mortals need in a clean, easy and beautiful package.
It is easy to use even in situations where your ISP provides a router you need to keep (like FiOS). The router is easy to put into bridge mode to make it work in a situation like that.

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
Nothing's perfect, but the AirPort Extreme Base Station is a close contender. The router and security net were a no brainer to set up with our existing apple laptops, ipad, itouch, and iphone and the throughput is excellent. If you have apple products, this is the router to have!

This router was easy to set up and works very well. The guest network feature and dual bands are great. I've noticed a significant improvement in page loading since the Airport Extreme was installed.

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
It's running smoothly. The support for so many more devices and the speed make it great.
My only complaint would be that the installation is still a DVD and not on a thumb drive, like some companies are doing these days.

Comments about Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station:
I was using a Dlink Extreme 655 router with an access point and still was not satisfied with how fast my pages were loading. Not anymore. This thing puts out the signal and recieves it as well. I have found Wifi signals from my neighbors that I have never picked up on before. I'm terrible at reading directions, and had a little trouble setting it up at first, but then it practically set itself up after I read and followed the steps.

Replaced a D-Link router with this AirPort Extreme and the speed doubled. It's hard to believe, but true. I get excellent reception outside and at extreme points on my property. I do miss the flashing lights of the D-Link. It was one way of telling that something was downloading or uploading.

My husband's PC worked fine on his inexpensive router, but my Mac wanted more and wouldn't keep a connection. With this new router we can coexist happily. I have greater speed and a further range of connectivity.

So far it has worked just fine. I bought it to replace the old modem router combo. It helped connect to the TV & VCR that support internet. Once I figured out that it was a stand alone router that needed a modem things went fine.
