The Kata D-3N1-33 3 in 1 Sling Backpack, Large (Black) is designed to fit a digital SLR camera body with battery grip, long-range zoom lens attached, 5-6 additional lenses, flash, laptop computer with a screen up to 15.4" and personal gear. The pack is made from reinforced Nycore grid fabric exterior with TST rib structures protection, Yelloop interior and smooth lining and an EVA and polyethylene closed cell foam interior. It has three carrying options in one; changing from sling to "X" position to backpack and back again. The bottom main compartment of the pack holds equipment and uses the modular dividers to custom fit the bag. The large top compartment will hold personal gear or additional gear and it has internal pockets and a MP3 player pouch. There is a computer section toward the rear of the sling bag.
Two external zippered pockets allow quick access to accessories without opening the main compartments. In sling position, the bag easily swings around from back to front to achieve quick draw access to the main camera and extras lenses. In backpack position and "X" position, the equipment can be comfortably carried for long distances. The included balancing hip strap helps take the load of heavy equipment off the shoulders. The included rain cover folds neatly away into an integrated pocket and can be hung out to dry on the small buckle next to the handle, or tucked away for storage in one of the pockets.

I use this product for travel and hiking in the Colorado Back country. Camera compartment easily handles my Canon EOS 7D with Tamron 280 mm, Canon 100-400 mm L lens, Canon Speedlight 580EX, multiple filters, and assorted notions. Room remains for several smaller lenses. When traveling, I use the computer compartment for my 13" Dell laptop and charger. When hiking, I use the computer compartment to hold my CamelBak bladder -- works great! Impressed how light the pack feels when its fully loaded. Easy to lift and feels quite comfortable once on my back. My wife tried it on and agreed on its comfort. Size conforms to airline carry-on specs. The personal gear compartment is adequate for jacket, lunch, and various small electronic devices -- cell phone, PDA, GPS, MP3, etc. Convenient to access all compartments with multiple entry ports to camera equipment. Three shoulder strap options provide flexibility though I tend to configure as a conventional backpack most often. In summary, is well designed, functional, and comfortable.

This camera pack is fine for holding gear but after three months of use on day hikes I think the design has several drawbacks for carrying a full load of camera gear for several hours, whether on a trail or around town.
USE: To hold gear when I am primarily out to take pictures. I've used it around town, on trail hikes and on off-trail bushwhacks. I use a D7000 and have a mixture of pro, semipro and consumer lenses designed for both DX and FX.
PROS: The camera storage compartment is designed well and is easily configured into a variety of options. Access is good. I particularly like having side access both sides of the pack. The other compartments are also useful. The tripod attachment is a smart design and works well. I'm now trying to retrofit it onto another pack.
CONS: The shoulder strap design is awkward (probably because of the complications caused by trying to have a sling/pack hybrid design). More importantly, there's no sternum strap. The lack of a sternum strap means this doesn't carry a full load of gear without sagging and pulling. it's also difficult to adjust and the extra material on the straps gets in the way. I've tried to solve this with a velcro strap I use to provide chest support across the straps, but the bottom line is loading this pack with a DSLR, three lenses and other gear is more than it can comfortably handle.
BOTTOM LINE: This is probably fine for around town, lightly loaded. I'm using it now for storage, having moved to Clik Elite packs for real trail use.

I purchased to carry my gear when doing engagment photo shoots. I can Carry a D7000, NIkon 80-200 ED, Tamron 28-75, 3 sb6000, pocket wizards, and other small accesories. I like the accesiblity that all my gear has. I don't reach to it as often as I do during weddings, whre I take my boda lens bag instead.

Very well made and the sling function is good. Access to the lower section-the cameras and lenses- is rather clumsy and too tight. The yellow interior is an excellent idea. Generally I like the bag provided I do not need really rapid access to the equipment

Comments about Kata D-3N1-33 3 in 1 Sling Backpack, Large:
I looked at EVERYTHING out there, comparing the following: -size(needs to fit in carry-on bin, yet still big enough to carry tons of stuff) -versatility (sling, backpack, roller capable, etc) -build quality (zippers, stitching, etc) -equipment protection (padding, compartment configurations, rain cover)-comfort(my back aint what it used to be - years of toting regular camera bags are the culprit)-price (of course!)In summary, this unit beat all the others in almost every category, especially price. I did a job last week in MS and LA carrying the following in this bag: a Canon DSLR, 70-200/2.8 IS, 16-35/2.8, 50/1.4, 2 extra batteries & charger, Olympus E-PL1 with viewfinder,20/1.7 & 50/1.4, Yashicamat 124G TLR medium format camera with 10 rolls of film, 2 Sennheiser Wireless Transceivers and Tram mic, Zoom H4n with shockmount and Velo dual shoe mount adaptor, small 500GB external hard drive, USB/memory card adaptor, 2 Variable ND filters, Macbook 15" laptop with AC adaptor, plus extra stuff like notepad, AA and AAA batteries, etc. It was STUFFED full and weighed a ton, but it worked almost perfectly. One great thing about this bag is the roller cart strap on the back which allows you to stick it on its own cart or even on the handle of your roller carry-on luggage (perched atop your carry on). how it rates, in my opinion:SIZE: almost perfect. is not low profile, but you can move about just fine. Can handle most conventional setups of DSLR or Medium Format film or small Video camera like XA-10 with some sound and grip gear included. DOES NOT have a convenient method of attaching either tripod or additional items. Bummer. VERSATILITY: unlike almost all others, this is one of the few laptop-category packs that lets you choose between backpack or sling option (or tuck all the straps in if they arent needed). BUILD QUALITY: Surprisingly great. Way better than several of the more expensive brands. Zippers and stitching are top notch and the bag is very low-profile, meaning its designed to look like sleek equipment, and not like a clunky safari tourist item.EQUIPMENT PROTECTION: This is a big one for me - I've always wondered how supposedly professional brands (Domke) can make products that have little or no bottom & side padding. Why put thousands of dollars of gear into a bag that doesnt protect it? Anyway, this bag excels above the others in this category as well. It's not bulletproof - and the bottom of the laptop compartment could use a bigger pad - but it affords much more top, side, and bottom protection for your gear than most of the others. COMFORT: Very good - though better in backpack mode than sling mode. The padded waist strap makes a giant difference. The cushioning for your back is really good too. Like any bag, its going to hurt after awhile if you overload it like I did. Do yourself a favor and find a way to get smaller gear if you can (like micro 4/3). If I didnt have to shoot video sometimes, I wouldnt even own a full size DSLR anymore. PRICE: It's lamentable how all bags have skyrocketed in price over the last ten years. I was hoping to find something decent for around seventy five bucks but there's nothing out there. This was about a hundred twenty, which was more than I wanted to pay but way less than a lot of alternatives. It definitely was a lower price than anything similar by Tenba, ThinkTank, LowePro, etc. All things considered, its a great value. NOW HERE'S THE MAJOR FLAW: I dont know how they missed this but...the main compartment of the bag unzips in such a way that if you are in a hurry and dont double to check to make sure the bag is closed - IT WILL DUMP ALL YOUR CONTENTS OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG ONTO THE GROUND !!! Yes, the opening goes only around the bottom of the bag, from one side to the other, so be %1000 percent sure that it's zipped before you sling it over your shoulder and start jogging down the street. This idiotic design flaw is what keeps the bag from being perfect. I hate to think how many people's lenses and camera bodies will meet their death by falling out the bottom of this bag :(

I use this bag for daily use. I take my camera with me everywhere I go. So it has stood the test of a couple weeks of trekking everywhere with me and getting put in the back seat of my car. The padding in the bag is very nice. And the sectioning off capabilities is great. The yellow color is a plus. Since its pretty dark or at least has been in my other bags. The yellow makes everything black pop. I have yet to put my 15inch Macbook Pro in. But for my job I have a folder that fits perfect and the padding is great there as well.
The ability to adjust the straps is nice. My usage will only be as a regular backpack or using the waist straps for support while hiking. It is easy enough to sling around and access the camera side entrance. After I got used to opening it with the clip and zippers. It works great.
There are plenty of pockets and I have way more room in it then I did with my Lowepro Compudaypack.(Which I loved) Everything fits and there is room for more.
The access the the main storage pocket is not very easy. But if you keep the lens on the camera and use it for lens storage. I would prefer that it not be easy to access. Don't want stuff falling out.
A few problems I have are. I own a Nikon D40x and it fits loosely in the section because of the small size of it. Still fits secure and no worries. But if I ever get a larger camera it will fit perfect. I keep my 18-200 on it and the length of the opening has plenty of room.
The straps are taking getting used to. They are not as nice for me as the Lowepro ones are. But that could just be a preference on my part.
I'm a large guy and this bag is working really well for me so far. Only thing I would change would be the shoulder straps. But again that is just my preference. I also have not tried the waist strap. We will see if it fits my waist if we get a decent snow anytime soon.
I do wish there was more storage for random stuff like a possible change of clothes. But I knew that it wouldn't have the room for that going in and didn't want to get a bag that big.
I also bought the tripod holder and will review that as well.

The consruction on this bag is first rate and at least as good if not better than any of other bag I saw on my visit to the B&H supper store. You need to think about how use the bag and then set up acordingly. When I got the bag it was set up for a right hand shooter becuase the side quick access door work if I have the bag slung over my left shoulder.
Other leason I have learned is to make sure all the fastex buckel are fasten befor I pick the bag! the botom compartment comes with two set of zipper sliders, I recomend the these are closed on either side of the of top two big buckles this alows you to unbuckel the big buckel and pull down to get access to the side of the camera compartment and top section of camera compartment. In the top section of the lower compartment I took out all the subdivders and run a telephoto zoom. Access to this comparment from the other side or bottom flap is tight. The botom pocket are deep egough to hold a lens normal or wide angle zoom lens standing on end or a large flash. Another nice feature is the memory storage pouch on the sling side door. Top compartment holds alot stuff to include flash defuser, batteries, remote trigger, lens pens, level bulb, and net pouch for quick refence cards. Top side pockets are great for filters but only fits thin stuff. I use laptop pouch for a reflector.
I particular like the left shouldler straps have red lining so know when I have the bag off my should that the red stap need to be towards the ground to open the corect side. The belt come to high on waist because I am six foot. The rain show Kata though though this bag very. Great deal on bag with so many features.
One star off for the access top of th camera section.

I use this bag daily. I shoot daily and seldom plan my shoots, I just go out and find stuff. I have my camera body with a lens attached and three other lenses. My back up Point and shoot. Small gorilla pod, large three section tripod, 7 in 1 27" reflector, chargers and cords, 2 spare batteries for main, 1 for back up, small first aid kit, 2-4 power bars, phone, eyeglass case, camera rain gear, Oh and my sensor cleaning kit (I get out in the boonies and dirty). Might be a few more items. Still have an empty space for a laptop and room to spare for its power supply. This bag is room and not as bulky on my back as I had expected. More than large enough for my random trips and hikes. Built well and the only design flaw is with the straps in the standard back pack configuration lacks a cross chest strap. Same with sling configuration needing a tension strap like my other sling bags had. This was easily remedied at a local hardware store with some webbing strap, a few friction buckles and a couple quick release buckles. Rides like a dream on my tall frame. Won't carry all my gear for an over night excursion up a cliff face, but it does fine for an afternoon outing. One other thing I would have added to the design is a water bottle pouch, but you can get past that with a clip bottle. Just plan on it. The lower d rings will be handy for that.

Perfect for hiking or long walking, because of the kidney belt, very comfortable, durable and secure. (It is a Kata after all)
Surprisingly fits a lot of gear.
Quite a few clips to make it secure, find it a little tricky to shoot from the hip, but rather it be secure, living in South Africa and all.

I got this pack for an upcoming trip to Rwanda where we'll be doing some gorilla and chimpanzee treks in the mountains. It holds everything I want to bring and seems quite comfortable for my frame (I'm about 5'11" and weigh around 210).
I'm very impressed with the construction and the flexibility - not only of the interior compartments, but also the changeable shoulder straps. The rain cover is also a plus. I added the tripod sling to finish off the package.
In addition to the upcoming trip, I shoot a lot of sailing photos, often from small skiffs, so I really need something that will hold all my gear and protect it from the elements.
If it works out as well as I expect, I hope to get many years of use from it.

I needed a bag that would hold a laptop for business travel as well as my digital Rebel rig. the Kata fills the bill as promised. It is bigger than I expected and easily held a single Rebel body and a 70-300 lens with 2 or 3 compartments left over for cords, chargers and a GorillaPod. the Laptop sleeve in the rear of the bag easily holds my 13" Macbook Pro with room to spare.
I am flat out in love with the Sling function of the bag and the one hand grab system of retrieving your camera on a moments notice. the side locks (on both sides of the bag) open easily to reveal your equipment quickly and give you a reassuring click when closing them. All of the hardware has a very rugged feel to it. The back straps are easily changed from traditional backpack mode to sling mode and tuck away when not it use, very convenient and functional. These straps aren't as padded as some other ones I've seen, but they are well padded and look consistent with the rest of the bag to present a very slick and professional look.
The compartments inside are easy to configure to your gear and the bright yellow material makes it super visible in low light situations. that's a very thoughtful touch.
My one surprise is that the top grab handle runs at 90 degrees to most other bag handles - so when you grab it naturally and walk, the width of the bag sticks out from your leg instead of next to you like most other backpacks. The opening of the top compartment makes it easy to access on a airplane.
Well done Kata and well worth the money!
