I didn't want to just buy the cheapest hard drive out there to back up all my photos of my son and his first year. I'm happy to say I am glad I went with the LaCie. When I opened it up, it was obvious this isn't one of the cheap, flimsy portable types; this thing has some heft. It has an actual aluminum casing (not looks like metal) and seems to be built very solid. The setup was easy and straightforward and transfer rates are quite reasonable. I will also trust this hard drive to back up my work and research as a graduate student. So far, I'm very pleased with the purchase, and as always, B&H was excellent to work with.

This is my 1st 1 TB drive, all others I have are 250GB - so I didn't expect having to deal with a power on/off switch and large drive size (4.5"W x 8"L x 2"H). If I was to do it again, I would purchase a different LaCie that is maybe $30 more, but half the size....

I over-thought this product because I didn't think anything could be this easy. After transferring the data in my Mac HD, I noticed that LaCie then operated as a "shadow" HD which got me confused. Ultimately I just ignored the HD Backup folder that I transferred and simply dragged information (in folders) into the LaCie via USB port. Voila. Customer support tried to help but their guidance involved an orange LaCie icon which never appeared on my desktop. So, I ignored that too. I might give this 5 stars but haven't enough experience manipulating the data yet.

So far, I really like this thing. It's built solid and has some real heft - it's outer shell is a thick tube of aluminum in a nice grey finish. And It clicks and hums with authority if that means anything. That front thing makes me think of the bridge of some guy's nose and eyebrows, but mine is sideways so it's not always LOOKING at me...

When I first opened the box this hard drive came in, I had to look twice because when the light reflects off the front of the hard drive it almost looked like it had been dented...that is until I realized that this is part of the very cool slick design. I've only had it for a short time, but it's been reliable so far and is one of the more quiet operating external hard drives I've had. The only con is it has its own power supply rather than drawing off power from the USB port it plugs into. But you can't always get every feature at this hard drive's price point either.

I like the external power supply, no issues with USB voltage being borderline. Also love the aluminum housing which serves as a big heatsink.
