This Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens is a DX-formatted medium telephoto Micro lens. It is ideal for extreme close-up and general photography including portraits. The lens will autofocus from infinity to 10.8" producing a life-size (1:1) image.
The lens also features Nikon's VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization. This allows handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. This is ideal for macro close-up work.
Nikon digital SLRs have either an FX or a DX sensor. The FX sensor, measuring 24 x 36mm, is roughly equivalent to the size of the 35mm film frame. The DX sensor is smaller, measuring 15.8 x 23.6mm. When this lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon DSLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.

I did not realize how much I would enjoy using this lens. I chose the 85mm DX Macro rather than the 40mm DX Macro since I felt that I would be too close to my subject at 40mm. I do not regret my choice, and love this lens. In addition to Macro shots, it works well for Portrait shots. Considering that it costs about one third of its FX counterpart (which is faster and heavier), I view this lens as a great value. It would be nice if it were a bit faster, but F 3.5 is fast enough for most of my needs (certainly for Macro).
Depending on the light, at times it has been helpful for me to switch to Manual Focus when using this lens. The Auto Focus is extremely fast, and works very well for non Macro shots. However, for Maco shots it seems difficult for my Nikon D5100 to get the subject in focus, no matter what non-manual setting I use. A tripod can be helpful for certain shots, but when trying to get a shot of a bug it would be nice if the auto-focus did a better job. It is not easy getting a small moving subject in perfect focus manually! Nevertheless, I do recommend this lens and love working with it!

Its nicely balanced on my D80. Quiet sharp, light & the VR helps in handholding for closeup macros of small insects, dragonfly, damselflies & butterflies. I got this as a alternative to the big 105mm VR as the cost difference is worth considering towards getting an 85mm VR. The f/3.5 doesn't really matter to the limited amount of amateaur shooting I do & I did not really saw the need for a faster f/2.8. Overall a good deal.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens:
I waited a few weeks before writing this review. One to get familiar with the true macro lens and to work out my kinks. I ordered this Nikon 85mm micro lens after many weeks of researching what I should get. I have used all the various attachments, i.e. magnifiers, extension rings, x times filters and the Raynox M-250 ring. Which is great in a pinch. Not to mention the macro feature of a Tamron 70-300 zoom with macro feature. They all do a really good job and I never thought I would see a big difference in an actual macro lens. As the Pro's say, there's nothing like a real macro 1:1 lens. I'm now a believer.
I struggled with various brands, sizes, etc. Let's remember everyone has their own specific needs and price range. I actually wanted everything, distance, VR, internal focus, light weight, quality and because of the price, I was hoping to get more use out of this one lens, I did. I must say I almost made the wrong choice for me, but I'm glad I kept thinking about it.
After much review and study, the Nikon (Nikkor) 85mm micro lens was the one. It seemed to fit right in the middle of what I wanted, needed and could afford.
The Nikon delivers. I use this on a D7000. I have included a few pics for sampling. I found that very helpful when I was researching the various lenses. Although I not sure what size and quality the samples actual post at. The lens is sharp, fast and very responsive. I realize when shooting macro, a tripod is the way to go, but that is fine when you have a setup shot. A spontaneous moment requires that grab the camera and shoot. That's one of the best features of the Nikon, the VR. The internal focus (so the lens does not get any longer) is also a Great feature. You can be at a very reasonable distance 9-10 inches at 1:1 for a great shot. The Infinity range of the lens takes good shots also, what a nice short telephoto lens. I'm sure going forward I will have more uses for this lens.
I won't go on about the other brands I checked out, and I sure there are good ones out there, but I am very very satisfied with the 85mm Nikkor. I would recommend it to anyone. If I had a Full frame camera, the 105 would have been my choice, but not this time.
By the way, the samples I have included were all taken with the camera hand held.
I hope this review helps other to make a good decision, and to find the lens right for you.
And of course B & H Photo is a great place to shop.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens:
This is my first prime lens, so I've had some fun and difficult times with it. That being said, I've been very impressed with the sharpness I have gotten in both portraiture and macro images. It's also lighter than I was expecting, and it's performing well in lowlight situations. My biggest complaint is that I am not thrilled with the autofocus feature and I am finding myself using it in manual focus more.

This lens is very good, I'm happy that I bought it.
The only complaint is not about the lens properly, but the relation between it and the Nikon camera D7000, I think that the focus is, sometimes, difficult to set, if I compare it with it's original lens.
But maybe this is normal, I'm not used to micro lens.

I use this lense for both macro/close up photography and everyday photography. It takes great pictures in both situations. It is a good lens for what it is, but doesn't completely replace my desire for the 105mm Micro.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens:
After using a Canon T-90 for several years I finally moved to a DSLR Nikon 3100. My concern was that the quality of the macro photos would not be as good as the those from film based equipment. So far I have been extremely pleased with the quality and sharpness of the photos rendered by the 3100 using the 85mm Nikon Micro lens. The pop-up TTL flash provides amazingly accurate exposures at a 1/1 distance even down to f-45. The lens sharpness seems better around f-16, but the depth of field at the smaller aperatures is more forgiving.
My preference for these macro shots is to use the manual focus with the aperature "A" setting on the camera. This allows more control over the depth of field, and assures the most important elements are critically focused. The flash provides the required lighting, and helps minimize subject or camera movement.
The working distance provided by this lens is very comfortable, and is probaly why the on-camera flash works so well on the macro shots.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens:
My intended purpose for this lens was to refine my macro skills before jumping into a more expensive lens. The lens' ability to hold a sharp focus combined with the VR function makes this a truly remarkable piece of my growing collection. Photos taken using a tripod outdoors produced a very nice bokeh using the wider apertures. A surprise was the lens' ability to capture stunning candid portraits!

I added this lens to my new D3100 for macro work. Having used a Canon T90 for years with bellows and macro lenses, I was slow to make the change to a DSLR. The 85mm Micro Nikkor gives excellent working distance and very sharp pictures. I am pleased with the results and am happy I moved to the DSLR.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens:
I'm new to the world of macro/micro imaging, but so far its terrific. If you like detail, this 85mm Nikon macro is well worth the money. I have taken all kindes of "still life" subjects,i.e garden hose rolled up for winter storage, the last blooms on their withwering stems, and all kinds of Autumn foliage
Getting used to the fixed focus of 85mm is another challenge however. You are indeed limited, and must therfore move around to capture scenes that are not in the realm of mafnification.
If you can afford it buy it!
