This is a good drive for the money. It seems fast and I have always invested in Western Digitals for their reliability. I have two complaints, but they are not enough to prevent me from buying this drive again. The first is the virtual CD with SmartWare applications - given Time Machine backup, this is rather worthless, only good for installing the software to change the front label on the drive. The problem is that from the factory, it always appears on the desktop even when you eject it. The fix is to download and update the drive's firmware, which adds an application to remove the virtual CD. Next, this drive does not turn off as it should. Ejecting the drive puts it in standby mode with a flashing light. Pressing the power button does the same. I couldn't find this info in the manual, which is on the Virtual CD as a PDF, but if you press and hold the power button for a few seconds, it will power off or on. [...] did not know this and I figured it out for myself. How can they not know that. Anyway... understand these issues and you get a great drive.

1 of 3 drives failed in 1 week. setup was a breeze all was great. 1 week later 1 drive failed. dealing with WD on replacement now. i wish there return policy was as seamless as the set-up software. there website when it comes to returns is a little confusing. i did buy drive based on price/size and FW800. seemed like a great deal. did not have any reviews yet so i took a chance. hopefully they will replace and no more problems. i will update review as needed.

Using it in a FW chain of drives for file storage. It plays well with the OWC drives it links with. No problems.

Set up took all of 5 minutes. The hardest part of set-up was finding the correct firewire connection. All cables were included, which is a big plus for me. After installation, Time Machine instantly recognized the device and the back-up process went smoothly. This is running on an old dual G5 Power Mac. Very happy with the drive so far.

As a photojournalist, I've amassed an array of hard drives on my desk over the years. This drive lets me see at a glance exactly what I have on the drive and how much space remains.
I love how it is plug-and-play for macs. Formatting away from the Fat32 is always a hassle.

I just backed up everything on my computer which has a 500GB hard drive using this drive. I needed to reformat for a new OS and this was perfect. It has firewire 800 and USB 2.0 but comes with cables to plug into any firewire. So far no problems at all. You can also use this drive to back up your system via Time Machine for mac.

Overall it's a pretty good desktop hard drive. It offers firewire 800 for a price well below the others. I have only used it to backup up info. The front information panel is quite useful. The only negative thing is the software which seems to be more annoying than helpful.

I needed to get a backup drive for my Mac since I decided to switch to Lion (wanted to be safe and it was way overdue anyway). This drive had the best reviews online and I thought I should just get it! It was so easy to use- you literally just have to plug it into an outlet, connect it to your Mac and that's it. The drive took care of itself and I'm happy because all of my files and photos are safe on there! It's also a good size, I thought it would be much bigger than it actually was, so it fits nicely on my computer table. I just was so happy about how easy it was to use, because I've never had much luck with backup devices (although, that was not using a Mac) and this one took care of everything for me! Very glad that I made this purchase!

Haven't had it long enough to say too much. It works and serves my needs. I will say that this was my first time making a purchase from B&H, and had great service, fast shipment and I plan on making more purchases from them.

I'm using this as my OS X Lion Time Machine. Working great so far. WD is a solid company and couldn't believe 1 TB for less than $100. Also, the E-Ink is pretty cool. It lets me name the drive so that I don't have to spin it up to know what's on it. When I need future external drives, this is what I'll get!

I use this product as a storage device for the most part.
When I do a photo shoot I work strictly from my desktop until the images are edited, process and retouched. At that point they go this new harddrive where they are stored and pulled from for future needs.
I have had no problems as of yet. I took it out of the box, plugged it in and away it went.
Four out of five stars only because I have had it less than a month.
