The 500GB StoreJet 25M Portable Hard Drive from Transcend is a portable USB 2.0 hard drive, intended for use with Windows, Mac, and Linux-based computers. Perfect for portable use, the drive draws power from the computer's USB port and meets US military drop-test standards.

I purchased this to bring along on vacation as a means to provide backup for my photos while having the peace of mind of a highly shock resistant device. The case is rubberized so it's slip resistant and you don't have to worry about scratches or dings. It's as fast as other portable drives I've owned, but much more rugged. It comes with it's own USB cord which is only about 2 feet long and has a second USB plug to provide extra power to the drive. I found when using the supplied cord with a laptop, desktop or the MemoryKick Si, then there was no need to use the extra USB plug. However, when using a longer USB cord with a single plug, the drive wouldn't operate.

Contacted Transcend tech support, got reply after 3 weeks from Taiwan. They offered no solution and indicated its a glitch in their bundled software so must use manual steps to synch files instead of using the "One-Button."
If you don't mind the time-consuming inconvenience of opening their software program then following 3-4 steps to synch files, then it's a good unit.
Also, there is no confirmation that files have actually been synched if try to use the "scheduled" auto synch. Have to open the program and often get the message "was unable to auto-synch, please synch manually."

The drive is ok, but the Transcend Elite backup software is buggy and Transcend's tech support is unresponsive. I have gotten continual error messages when trying to perform simple backups and have reported this three times to Transcend. They never respond. Would highly recommend using another backup program, as the one that comes with the drive is essentially useless and again, tech support is non-existent. I'll keep these drives for secondary backup storage, but would not buy another Transcend product after my recent experiences.

The hard drive is well built. I bought it to back up pictures on a trip to Africa in January. I am taking a netbook to save weight. The back-up software will not run on the netbook. Downloaded software from Transcends website and still no luck. If I could read chinese I may be able to read the on screen messages. Troubling since I check English as my language preference.
But who needs the software! Hard drive functions wonderfully.

Like many others, I have cursed butter fingers. First portable hard drive I bought was dropped from maybe not the main cause, but by glossy slickness it fell and split open. This Transcend though by awesome design provides the handler with slip resistant feel. Besides its rhino skin sturdiness, the cable jack(or ends) don't easily come out interrupting transfers, like I have noticed on some other drives.
If you skipped to the end of my blabbering, basically this thing is awesome.

First, it does what it's expected to do. Back up and store data. Second, it does it quickly and quietly with little need to think on my part. Very user friendly. Plug and play with no added AC power needed. Third, it's built like a tank. Very nice rugged feel and it looks sharp too. It's a thing of beauty for something that's used occasionally. I wish all computer products looked and felt this good.
Finally, excellent price from B&H and I couldn't be happier.

The drive is a good value price wise, its just like using any kind of attached thumb drive or media player. Plug it in, load up drivers and then drag and drop files you want backed up. It comes with software you can use to manage the drive, similar to any thumb drive, but you can ignore it. So far so good!

Like it enough that I have 1 of these for each of my computers (total of 3). Very portable, the backup software works well for my PC laptop. Also use for my Mac with time machine and it's worked great. Nice to know it's designed to withstand some impact, although I hope to never test that. Also plug and play easy for both Mac and PC, unlike a Seagate I have at work.

This is a great hard drive, pretty smail for 500 Gb and with a great performance. I bought it because I want to keep my data safe and so far it hasn't dissapoited me.
The only con i find (to me at least) is that the software that comes with it doesn't on mac, so the auto backup button won't work for mac users.

I use it with my Macbook Time Machine. Just bought it, but seems to be quick and super durable.
Has a double USB cable, but when the Macbook a/c plug is in, just one of the USB cables is enough.
I formatted as I did not want to use the proprietary software.
