I bought three of these as a birthday present for a friend who's interested in trying out off-camera flash.

I decided to test them out myself to make sure they work and also because I was curious about how well they work.

I can report that they're great! They work exactly how I expected them to work: they are slave flashes triggered by the camera's built-in flash.

First things first though, they are not TTL. So, the camera has no control over the output of these flashes. That's not a bad thing - it's just something to be aware of.

If what you need is a some extra flash when taking photos at parties or dinner, these would be a great choice.

They also work pretty well for portraiture, still-life and strobist uses. You just need to control the amount of light these flashes contribute to your photo by adjusting the camera's aperture (or ISO if necessary).

Also, you can just move the flash closer or farther away. You can bounce the flash off walls or other things too.

The recharge time seemed fine - I didn't find myself waiting for them to recharge.

They have a switch that allows you to set their behaviour in terms of when they fire. There aren't any instructions but it's not hard to try out each of the settings. I found that the first setting, S1, worked when my camera's flash mode (a Nikon D90) was set to Manual. S3 worked when my camera's flash mode was set to TTL.

They haven't the sturdiest construction ever and a couple of times I realized that one of them wasn't working because the batteries weren't making contact with the metal contacts. I just shook it a little and it was fine.

Came with no instructions as to what S1, S2, S3, S4 were about, or even how to use it. Taking the limited instructions, I could not find out why the flash worked sometimes, and other times not at all-even though the flash signaled it was ready with the solid red indicator on the back.

I use this to photograph components in an industrial setting - mostly steel and concrete, lots of bad lighting situations. This flash works with all our cameras in a harsh use environment and keeps on going.

Comments about Bower SFD18 Digital Slave Flash:

Don't expect miracles but for the price this flash does a very good job. It requires a little getting used to know what setting to use according to your camera. Easy to carry and you can take a spare set of batteries if you expect heavy use, instead of being dependent on built-in rechargeables like other models. It fills where needed.

I have no complaints with this product as it does exactly what it is supposed to do. I'm very much a beginner so I don't need any bells and whistles and would not know what the different setting do but it flashes when my camera flashes so I'm happy with the product.
