Oftentimes it is the small and/or simple things in life which constitute the building blocks for the most intricate and complicated designs, procedures and events.

Therefore it is not surprising that a simple accessory, the humble Foam Windscreen (F/OLM10, 2-Pack) on a Lav mic purchased from B & H some time earlier, turned out to be one of the most important pieces of equipment at a recent outdoor shoot.

Let me present the scene….Imagine a sparkling blue Dominica (not the Dominican Republic) sea against a lush green mountain background; a smiling Caribbean sun gently warming the waters; and a strong, cooling, wind blowing from the nearby hills to the sea below…

And within this setting are the actors and technical crew vainly trying to capture the best from the talent and the environment.

Take after take is done, everything is going fine, when suddenly there is an out-of-place sound in the headphones! What is this?...Ah, the Foam Windscreen on the Lav mic had fallen off between takes without being noticed, and got lost in the stony shore. And the disruptive sound was the rushing wind caressing an unprotected mic during the new take ("…Take 25 – Action!!")

Luckily there was a spare foam windscreen on hand and when this was replaced on the mic everything was all right again. "Just like that!" - as we say down here - the sound of the wind disappeared, the waves presented a mellow acoustic backdrop, and the voices of the actors were again crisp and clear over everything else.

This experience shows that this windscreen is worth every cent of its purchase price because it is not just a pretty face – it's a really good windscreen!!

And incidentally I bought a spare 2-pack to ensure that I will always be adequately covered (pun intended) on outdoor shoots in the future…

Make sure to get these for the OLM-10 Lavalier Microphone. They are small and can get lost easily, but they are also very inexpensive. The sound quality is much better when you use them without a doubt.
