With its wide angle zoom lens, sophisticated design, and versatile PTZ mechanism, the Canon VB-C500D is the ultimate tool when you need to secure confined areas such as ATM vestibules, elevator lobbies, and building entrances, as well as larger sites such as offices, retail stores and shopping malls. Thanks to a Day/Night function, the VB-C500D is also an excellent low light performer, and will produce visible images in light levels down to 0.1 lux. And since no IR filter is employed in this switching process, there's no need to re-focus the lens, ensuring uninterrupted, round-the-clock video streaming. Image quality is further enhanced using a multitude of electronic controls, in particular a Smart Shade Control function, which acts like WDR to compensate for high contrast and backlit scenes.

VB-C500D gives you a wealth of compression and streaming options so you'll have maximum control over the data distribution process within the boundaries of storage and network resources. And thanks to DIGIC NET technology, VB-C500D can execute complex operations while using minimal PC processing power. With the VB-C500D you also get a sophisticated motion detection function, which can be used to trigger email notification as well as audio recording.

Another important feature of this camera is PoE, which by using the Ethernet cable as a power conduit will give you greater flexibility in the installation process. You'll also appreciate its 2-way audio function, giving you the ability to listen-in on an occurrence as well as communicate verbally over the network.

Included with the VB-C500D is Canon's VK-Lite software, giving you the ability to view and record up to 4 network cameras. Optional software is available for recording 16 camera (VK-16) or 64 cameras (VK-64).

Wide-Angle 2.4x Zoom Lens
The VB-C500D features a genuine Canon wide angle lens with an 82° horizontal field of view, providing installation flexibility for a number of different applications and locations such as stores, offices, and auditoriums. Due to Canon's genuine optics, the lens maintains exceptional image clarity throughout the entire field of view.

The 2.4x optical zoom lens makes the VB-C500D perfect for close monitoring of tight spaces such as ATMs and elevator lobbies. Easy to setup, the zoom can be set to magnify or close-up into areas of importance.

The high-precision lens used in the VB-C500D allows for high resolution video in a variety of conditions. Canon's superior optical technology is powerful and precise colors remain true. The bright F1.1 diameter lens combined with high-sensitivity CCD provides optimal contrast even in low light. The lens system is built upon Canon video camera technology to provide high-quality continuous video capture that's equipped to handle diverse lighting conditions and temperatures throughout the day.
Progressive Scan
For a sharper view of moving subjects, the progressive scan CCD image sensor minimizes the 'comb' effect often seen in interlaced video. The camera can deliver up to 30 FPS, subject to the available network bandwidth.
Exceptional Low Light Performance
The VB-C500D's bright lens combined with a high-sensitivity CCD and Canon's proprietary imaging engine work together to provide exceptional low light performance for clear visibility of camera subjects and surroundings. Color images are visible as low as 0.2 lux of light.
Color Video at 0.2 Lux
Thanks to the high image quality processes in Canon's proprietary DIGIC NET processing engine, the VB-C500D is capable of capturing color images of subjects with brightness as low as 0.2 lux (1/30 sec.), making the VB-C500D ideal for video monitoring of locations with variable lighting.
Auto Day/Night with Digital Night Mode
The Auto Day/Night mode switches automatically in dark nighttime conditions. When monitoring in nighttime and other low light conditions, the VB-C500D's new Digital Night Mode will automatically change from color video monitoring to monochrome video monitoring without interruption caused by insertion/removal of an IR cut filter. Thanks to Canon's wide angle lens, its large aperture and improved digital sensitivity, the VB-C500D ensures smooth, high-quality video with minimal noise. In addition, you can select up to five different brightness levels for Auto Day/Night switching, to provide options for a wider range of environments.
Smart Shade Control
If the background of an image is too bright to see main subjects, the VB-C500D allows you to adjust the contrast of the darker areas to make it easier to see. Unlike backlight compensation, the shade correction adjusts darker areas of the image, while maintaining the brightness of the brighter areas so the background image remains clear. Since this process occurs in the camera, image degradation is minimized and the load on the system is reduced.
MPEG-4 and Motion JPEG Video
The VB-C500D allows you to record video in either M-JPEG or MPEG-4 video formats. M-JPEG captures a stream of individual JPEG images, while MPEG-4 captures changes to images to create video. Each has its advantages based on your monitoring needs. The high image quality of M-JPEG video is suited for live monitoring while MPEG-4 is ideal for recording due to its smaller file size and lighter network load.
Data Encoding and Transmission with DIGIC NET Processing
Powerful DIGIC NET Processor
The VB-C500D performs all image processing and encoding with a powerful, proprietary hardware-based compression and engine called DIGIC NET. Cameras that process or encode images via PC software use a lot of CPU power, which results in lowered frame rate. With DIGIC NET, each step of the image capture, processing, encoding, and transmission process uses virtually zero PC CPU power.

Simultaneous Data Distribution
The VB-C500D can simultaneously deliver both M-JPEG and MPEG-4 video in high quality VGA size (640 x 480) at the maximum frame rate of 30fps- with no loss in frame rate, unlike many competing models. The high image quality of M-JPEG video is suited for live monitoring, while for recording MPEG-4 is ideal for recording due to its smaller file size and lighter network load. Furthermore, the camera supports IPsec and performs onboard data encryption without any loss in frame rate. Each camera offers support for up to 30 simultaneous clients (users accessing and viewing video images at the same time).

Multi-Streaming
The VB-C500D can distribute M-JPEG images in three sizes simultaneously (640x480, 320x240, 160x120). The 160x120 size comes in handy for image upload mobile devices, the 320x240 size is useful when monitoring multiple cameras on a single screen, and 640x480 is ideal for saving when high image quality is desired.
IEEE 802.3af Compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE)
The VB-C500D supports IEEE 802.3af compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which allows the use of a single LAN cable to both power the camera and transfer video and audio data when connected to a PoE switch. Because a power cable is not required, the camera can be installed at sites without readily accessible AC outlets. And because PoE eliminates the cost of running expensive power cabling to the device, installation costs are kept to a minimum. There is no need for additional electrical constructions once you connect the camera to a PoE switch.

In addition, the VB-C500D can be powered using an external power supply (AC24V / DC12V) using the optional AC adapter (PA-V17) and power interface cable (WP500-VB).
Motion Detection
The VB-C500D has built-in motion detection capability, allowing you to set up to four motion detection areas with varying levels of sensitivity. Pre-recorded audio can also be set to playback. In addition, the VB-C500D has an image Upload and Email Notification feature. When subject motion is detected or an external sensor is triggered, the camera is equipped to automatically send the images to a desired location via FTP/HTTP/SMTP (email). For example, you can have the camera automatically send the images to a mobile phone or email address. Pre-recorded audio can also be set to playback.
Two-Way Audio (Full Duplex)
The VB-C500D can transmit and receive audio in real time from an authorized networked PC. Simultaneous two-way audio allows administrators logged in to the Admin Viewer web interface to listen in on a camera site, make announcements to the scene of the camera or do both at the same time. An optional audio interface cable is required (WA500-VB).
Camera Setting Adjustments

Three Metering Modes
The VB-C500D offers three selectable metering modes, or methods for measuring brightness (amount of light) of subjects to set the exposure. This is a first in this class of network cameras. Choose from "Average," "Center-Weighted" or "Spot," which can be switched depending on the shooting condition.

Seven Levels of Exposure Compensation
Automatic exposure compensation offers seven levels of correction. Compared to other cameras where only positive correction for backlit situations is available, the VB-C500D has negative correction for overly bright situations. You can set the white balance and the light source to match the installation site.

Shutter Priority Auto Exposure
The VB-C500D allows you to select a desired shutter speed, and the camera will set the matching aperture value for proper exposure. If you change the shutter speed or the light level changes, the camera adjusts the aperture accordingly. This is useful for fast-moving subjects such as cars in motion, where setting a fast shutter speed will ensure blur-free capture.
Software and Security

Web Viewer and VB Admin Tools
The VB-C500D comes with a built-in Web Viewer for live monitoring and basic camera control, such as controlling the camera's PTZ movements. Because this software can be set to no user authentication and can be distributed to the public, it's ideal for webcasting over the net. The VB Admin Tools is a set of tools the camera administrator can use to make adjustments to camera settings such as motion detection and a log viewer. The VB Initial Settings Tool sets up the network environment for your camera and connects it to the network.

"VK-Lite" Recording Software
The VB-C500D comes bundled with network video recording software, VK-Lite, a software application that lets you monitor, record, and play back images from up to four cameras from a single screen. The camera comes with everything you need to start monitoring and recoding straight out of the box--there's no need to buy additional software.

Browser Access Restriction
The VB-C500D provides three levels of user access to ensure security. In addition to the Administrator, who has control of the entire system, users can be divided into registered (Authorized) users and general (Anonymous) users. Each type of user has access to different monitoring functions and camera control as specified by the administrator. The most basic level of access (general users) doesn't require registration, making the VB-C500D suited for webcasting applications, too.

IPsec Support
IPsec (IP security) is a set of protocols for securing IP communications by encrypting data streams. IPsec secures the data flow to and from the camera, and ensures that only authorized users have access.
On-Screen Display Function
With VB-C500VD's on-screen display function, the date, time, and camera name (or any character combination up to 15 characters) can be embedded into the video. Displaying the camera name on the video helps to distinguish different cameras at a glance. Embedding the date and time eliminates the need to search for date and time information. To improve the visibility of this information, users can also change the display position, color of the text, and color of the text outline.
Easy Installation in Various Environments
Compact and adaptable to a wide variety of environments, the VB-C500D can easily be placed in an upright, ceiling-mounted, or wall-mounted position. The 3.7-inch (dome diameter) ultra compact mini-dome camera allows you to monitor without drawing people's attention even in upscale condominiums, hotels and other places where the interior design is more emphasized.
