Porta Brace MXC-552 Audio Combination Case
The Porta Brace MXC-552 Audio Combination Case (Signature Blue) is designed to carry a Sound Devices 442 or 552 audio mixer, cables and accessories. The modular design of the case gives the flexibility to change the combination of equipment that each job demands. The custom fitted case provides easy access to switches, cables, batteries, and other important controls. The gear is protected from rain, snow, dust and other damaging forces. This case can be ganged with many Porta Brace Audio Recorder cases.
The MXC-552 has a flap on the bottom of the case that provides access to the rubber covers/socket for a removable SD or SDHC card and a USB port. The case has attachment points to add an AR-7 or AR-788 Porta Brace Audio Recorder case. The clear vinyl window can be removed and can hinge on both sides of the mixer. There is a removable zippered lid for mixer compartment. The case is made from lightweight water-resistant 1000 denier Cordura nylon with a fully padded customizable interior.
The Porta Brace RM-MULTI/E extreme detachable radio mic pouch is included.

POSITIVIES:
I'm using this case with a SignVideo ENG-44 mixer and Marantz PMD-661 digital recorder. The ENG-44 fits in the mixer compartment just fine (the strap-ins are not a 100% fit but perfectly fine). There is a separate compartment for wireless receivers too. I use this to stash my recorder - it's much roomier than I had even hoped. And there is a large front pocket for headphones, with a cinch tie and velcro flap cover. Strap is leather and padded - very comfortable. It's great - I can fit all my run-and-gun audio gear in it.
Build quality is excellent as you'd expect. Compartments are amazingly adaptable, with velcro panels all over to reconfigure it exactly to your liking, including cable entry/exit points everywhere. Comes with half a dozen foam/velcro pads so you can configure the compartment space to your liking.
NEGATIVES:
1) The main compartments all have velcro closures which are quite loud when opening ("rrrriiiippp"). Wish they used a quiter closure mechanism. You'd never want to open the plastic top flap while taping. As a result I leave them open all the time which kind of defeats the purpose of having a flap.
2) The wireless receiver compartment top flap has velcro at the front and back making it easy to access and arrange cables. However the back-side corners are permanently stitched to the bag, preventing you from changing the configuration of the flap (e.g., if you prefer a rear-opening flap you can't do that). A small improvement would be to lose that stitching so the flap is completely configurable like the one on the main mixer compartment.
3) The shoulder strap is well made padding wrapped in leather. However the leather stitch seam is on the bottom side in contact with your shoulder. If you were the sensitive type that might get irritating after a long day because the stitch-seam is fairly prounounced.
Overall this is an excellent mixer bag made of great materials, excellent construction, very roomy, and incredibly flexible given the limitless ways you can configure the compartments and the access points. It's also surpisingly affordable given it's size/capacity. Correcting a few nits (above) would make it the perfect mixer bag.

This case is literally built for the 552 and it shows. This case has everything you need and not an ounce more. And if you are working the field all day, that is exactly what you want.
All the access pockets are secure and yet easy to access. The velco has not been a sound issue for us since we don't dig in the pockets while recording, but I can see it being a problem for some.
I cant see any way it could be improved or a person could ask for more.

I've been using Porta Brace cases for longer than I'd like to admit and have always enjoyed the durability and "bang for the buck" return on my investments. You can't put a price on the peace of mind you get knowing your equipment is protected in the field.
Cases could be better if they made some of the access points with water tight zippers. During a wedding or other noise sensitive shoot, the ripping sound of the velcro can be a bad thing.
