The ultra-wide Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-mount Cameras is a precision manual focus prime lens that provides excellent image performance over its entire image range from 0.98' (0.3 m) to infinity. Combined with the legendary Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating, the Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 delivers brilliant pictures even under difficult lighting conditions. This professional lens, when mounted to a digital SLR using a DX-type sensor, has an effective focal length of 27mm (35mm equivalent).
ZF.2 lenses support all key modes (e.g. aperture priority, shutter priority, program AE or manual exposure settings) on camera models equipped with an electronic interface (e.g. current Nikon DSLR cameras). To do so, simply lock the aperture ring in the largest f-stop shown in orange.
On camera models without an electronic interface, the aperture is manually set on the lens aperture ring. With some camera models, it is possible to set in the menu whether the lens should be selected using the setting dial on the camera or the aperture ring on the lens. Please note that, for technical reasons, there is no halfway notch between the largest and second largest f-stop. The focused distance is not transmitted to the camera body.

It was getting hard to choose de ideal lenses kit for my new Nikon D800. I already had a 24-70, 50 -1.4 and a surprisingly good 28-300 bought with the camera, so I needed a wide angle. Alternatives were, Nikon 16-35 VR, Nikon 14-24 and Zeiss Distagon 18-3.5. The 16-35 was sold out so I picked the Zeiss and the 14-24 for 2 days walkaround in NYC. No doubt the best lens, as many say, is the 14-24 but I end up returning it in favor of the Zeiss.
14-24:
- Doesn't accept filters which is a drawback. However the front cover protects the lens when in the bag.
- Is quite heavy and bulky so less practical for walk around and travel
- Very expensive
- Zoom capability with better quality than most fix lenses
- Very fast lens, with exceptional clarity
- Good construction
- Excellent quality in most conditions. Some minimal distortion as normal in such a lens, when at 14mm.
Zeiss
- Good overall quality. Well built
- Light and small for the type, good for traveling
- Not a zoom and however not better than the 14-24 image quality wise but still excellent, with very good color rendition. Quite sharp, just a little less than the 14-24.
- Not so wide (18 vs 14) and not do fast (3.5 s 2.8), which is evident in dark ambiances
- Still a very nice lens, very easy to use, smooth manual focus, although somehow difficult to focus in dark and low contrast ambiances. Nikon electronics helps but, is not perfect.
- Front cap could be better but does its job, wondering for how long.
I believe its a very good choice for someone's bag, for tavelling, vacation and general use and walk around. I found out that the 14-24 should be more for professionals, despite my camera deserves only the very best lenses to render all its potential. I believe the 18 - 3.5 is up to it, considering the use and alternatives I tested.
The main reason that made me go for this review, was however, the excellent and already world recognized service at B&H store, NYC. I confess I pushed it a bit this time and I think their service is improving each time I visit it. Congrats to you guys.

I used this lens in daylight and was not pleased with the results. THe edge sharpness was not as expected and I was not thrilled with the overall sharpness that Zeiss lenses are known for. so, these lenses might have the Zeiss name; but they are not the lenses that used to be made in Germany.

I love using Zeiss lenses on my Nikon. Who needs autofocus?!? This is a heavy lens because it is so solid. Focus is smooth. Aperature ring snaps ever half stop. Images are sharp. Wish it was faster, but you can't have everything.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm F/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:
Great wide angle lens. Manual focus is ok but I still prefer Autofocus on longer focal lengths. I was going to buy the Zeiss Distagon 21 f2.8 but already own the Nikor 24-70 f2.8 and decided the focal length of the 21 was too near the 24-70. Glad I did get this 18mm. IMHO its better than the 17-35 f2.8 (another great zoom lens) at 18mm.
I traded in the 17-35 mainly to save weight in my camera bag. Trade offs!

It's every thing I would expect from a Zeiss product. However it is not with out a little distortion of objects in very close range.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm F/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:
Use the Zeiss 18mm with Letus Ultimate adaptor & get great results. Nice & sharp edge to edge with a small amount of vignetting when iris is wide open. Works best at about F5.6, where you get best results with the preferred depth of field. Also has that great Zeiss build quality. Wish it was a Macro.

Used mostly for landscapes and buildings. Excellent sharpness and contrast.
Solidly built and very smooth focusing. Only draw back is that it's not autofocus which really is not a big deal as you are dealing with such a wide angle lens. Able to attach a filter which is a big plus.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm F/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:
I have used the 18mm Zeiss Distagon ZF.2 for travel and landscapes. One needs to say nothing more than this lens stands alone in terms of image quality. My first experiences with Zeiss optics was in the late sixties when I owned and consistently used my Rollie E2 2.8 Zeiss Planar TLR. My thoughts today are the same as they were back then- these optics are simply in a different league. Color saturation and accuracy along with a solid build is nothing short of amazing.

Use of this lens is primarily for architectural and landscape. Solidly built and love the feel of finely machined parts. Very sharp corner to corner and has sharper contrast and colors than my other 12-24mm lens.

Comments about Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm F/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras:
Superb lens from Zeiss. Built like a tank, excellent finish, smooth manual focusing. I use this with a Nikon D3X and D3S. The high resolution of the D3X coupled with this lens has been excellent. The ZF.2 model works with Nikon's electronics and the cameras recognize the lens. No need to manually input the lens into the camera like the previous versions. No auto focusing, but apreature is read by the camera. Images are sharp from corner to corner. No distortion in the image. Excellent for use in architecture and landscapes. Interior shots work well with my SB-900. I have the Zeiss ZF.2 35mm f/2 lens, and both lens are quality glass for your Nikon cameras. Highly recommend.
