The 4TB (4x1TB) Promise SmartStor DS4600 RAID System from Apple is a desktop storage system with extensive RAID capabilities. The array connects to a computer via FireWire-800, FireWire-400, or USB 2.0, and is capable of sustaining transfer rates of up to 90MB/sec. It can be configured as a RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 1 with hot spare, RAID 5, RAID 5 with hot spare, or RAID 10.
The array is formatted with the HFS+ file system for use with Mac OS X. It is compatible with the Time Machine backup program that is included with Leopard and Snow Leopard. The array ships with SmartNAVI Management software, which includes the SmartSync backup module, perfect for users using earlier versions of OS X.

The SmartStor DS4600 is RoHS compliant; in simple terms the SmartStor(TM) DS4600 is eco-friendly, keeping harmful lead out of the environment and our delicate ecosystems. Consuming a mere 40W under full load with four hard drives installed, it uses roughly 13% of the power consumed by the average 300W power supply in standard computers.
The Standby feature of the SmartStor DS4600 allows hard drives to spin-down during periods of inactivity, thereby reducing power consumption to as little as 14W.
Sporting a new enclosure design, a fan-less integrated power supply and a state-of-the-art fan control mechanism, system noise is never an issue making the SmartStor DS4600 ideal for desktop, small office environments and any room in the house
