The 2TB My Book for Mac External Hard Drive from Western Digital is a desktop hard drive with a standard USB 2.0 interface and an illuminated capacity gauge that gives you a visual indication of how much space is available on the disk.

The product is very easy to use, almost too easy I expect to have to do more to get done what I what to get done. It's nice to watch what is going on as it is going on it makes me feel a lot more comfortable about the process.
The only thing I wish this program had was a quick guide on how to do some of the functions. In the users manual it explains how to use all the different functions in detail but I am not much of a techno geek so a more simple "do it like this, here is what happens, now your done" explanation would be very helpful for me. Otherwise I love this thing.

I have another MyBook that I bought in 2008 for my PC and love it. I was able to back up all my files and directly digitize and edit video media off the drive. After buying a new iMac, I wanted to expand my storage and use the drive in the same manner but no such luck. It is so slow transferring files and opening files (the little circle just goes and goes) that when I tried to import media from my camera directly to the drive, it actually corrupted the media and I had to start over using my old drive. I then decided to go to Apple's site and read that others find this drive painfully slow. Still, I have to wonder if mine is not actually defective because it is so slow that it took nearly a day and a half to transfer the files off my old drive. I am returning this thing today and buying a different type. FIVE STARS to B&H and I will continue to buy all my products from them because everything I buy here has been great. This is the first problem and they are taking care of me with no hassles.

I bought this disk for a high capacity Time Machine backup. I reformatted it with a volume name that included 'time machine' and in doing that erased any software that was delivered on the drive. In doing do, I disabled the snazzy feature of lit indicators on the edge of the drive. BUt the drive works well, is plenty fast and nearly silent. I would have given it 5 stars if the indicators worked.

All I had to do was plug it in, go on-line to see how to do it and followed the directions. Give it time to transfer the contents of the computer, it takes a while. I originally was only going to use it for the videos form my camera, but with two terabytes, I figured there was enough room for everything. After everything was completed, I checked and the videos downloaded perfectly. All of this was done without anyone's help! I usuallyneed to call Apple to get assistN e with stuff like this but not this time! Easy!

I'm using this with my MacBook's Time Machine. Having read reviews on it beforehand, I knew it might have problems if I didn't just plug it in and go with it as is without additional WD software being downloaded. Seemed to work fine that way on startup.
The unit is smaller and quieter than a previous 1TB version I purchased about 4 years ago.
Having only a USB connection, it is fairly slow, though, especially if lots of data is being backed up. If other applications are running when this is backing up, it's even slower. It would be great with a Firewire connection.

Decided to get My Book for backing up my iMac, which is filling up with valuable family memories. Setup took 2 minutes or less. Just plug in included USB cable and press the little power button. The power button is a bit small - it could have been made more prominent. iMac detected the new device immediately and asked if it should be be used for Time Machine backup. I clicked "OK" and that's about it. Backups are done automatically on a regular basis, I haven't really bothered to check the schedule.

I got this hard drive for two reasons.
1: My 500gig 'My Book' is full
2: this is made for Mac.
That being said I was disappointed that I wasn't able to dump my old hard drive into this new one and take it for that. Also it was confusing to use because while 'Western Digital' says it's fully compatible with time machine, they still install their own backup software. If you make the mistake I did, you'll have two copies of you hard drive. My finale and last complaint is that it seems to take a longer time to back up than my old 'My Book'.
Other than those few minor problems, I have nothing but praise for it. This two terabyte was half the price I paid for my 500gig just 4yrs ago (by the way my older 'My Book' still works fine). It's smaller and seems to be more solidly built than the older one. It's very quite. Bottom line, it was an inexpensive hard drive that works great.
