The 1TB LaCinema Classic HD Multimedia Hard Drive from LaCie is a media player that connects directly to your television set. It allows you to play back digitally encoded movies and music without the hassle of hooking your computer up to your home theater.
The player features a 1TB hard drive for media storage. It connects to a PC or Mac via USB 2.0 for data transfer. You'll also be able to connect it to your network via Ethernet in order to use the drive as a DLNA media server, which can be used to deliver media to a UPnP device. Popular UPnP devices include the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The drive can also act as a UPnP device itself. This lets you stream media from other network devices that feature DLNA support. Integrated Ethernet also allows you to manually copy files from your computer to the device's internal hard disk, without having to directly plug it into the computer.
The player supports HDMI and composite video outputs for home theater connectivity. It can output video in 1080p HD resolution, making it an ideal companion for an HDTV. Most popular HD video codecs are supported, including DivX, MKV, AVC, and H.264.
The large 1TB hard drive provides ample storage space for all of your photos, videos, and music. The drive is housed in a stylish enclosure, designed by Neil Poulton. The user-friendly navigation system is designed to work hand-in-hand with the included remote control. A front USB port is present, making it easy to access media from a USB flash drive or portable hard drive.

MY BIGGEST FAULT IS THE ABSENCE OF A PHYSICAL MANUAL YOU HAVE TO LOAD THE CD ,ACCESS THE INTERNET AND ALL THAT BEFORE YOU CAN GET THE INFO YOU NEED. I WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT MOST OF WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW WITHOUT IT. I CAN FEEL SOME MOVEMENTS INSIDE THE DRIVE WHEN I LIFT IT, OTHER THAN THAT THERE IS NO OTHER FAULTS OH SOMETIMES IT FREEZES UP AND YOU HAVE TO RESTART IT. IT RESTARTS AND SHUTS DOWN LIKE A COMPUTER, WITHOUT BEING CONNECTED TO ONE ALL IN ALL THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I EVER BOUGHT I WILL BUY IT AGAIN. LASTLY BEING ABLE TO TAKE YOUR ENTIRE MOVIES, MUSIC AND PHOTO LIBRARY ANY WHERE IS JUST AMAZING. File management is very limited.
DVD video TS are not read properly and lose all their options (menu, languages, subtitles, etc.).
The screen sizes are not well managed.
I feel like not having tested the same product than other.
I cut it back as a single hard drive.

Great device for viewing raw video footage. After shooting, I just attach the camera or card reader to the LaCinema via USB, and watch all my footage directly from the SD Cards. No need to transcode files just to watch on the computer. Very Handy for previewing finished edit projects without having to burn a DVD. It can also be used to stream videos from your DirectTV DVR to a second TV anywhere in your house.

We bought this product to use as a video storage hard drive; it's hooked up to the TV through HDMI cables.
The product itself is very easy to use. The instruction booklet that comes with it though is awful, it has very little instructions so it takes a little time to figure out the idiosyncrasies of the remote (e.g. how to jump through "chapters" in the movie.)
Be careful - it does get quite hot even when it's not in use so we usually unplug ours when we're not using it.
Definitely update the firmware and drivers - this is a MUST! We were slightly surprised to receive the product with none of the updates installed, but it's a relatively easy process and the updates are easy to find online if you just search for "lacie driver/firmware updates"
Overall, it's a great little device to have. It's small and easily portable so you can take your entire movie collection (or a good chunk of it depending on how many movies you have!) anywhere.

This media player works well and was easy to set up. We have both Macs and PCs on the network and they were all able to recognize the device without any issues. The user interface is well done, and is quite intuitive. The video and audio quality is very good.

LaCinema Classic HD is a great product that plays plenty of file formats even MKV. It's silent, relatively compact, good looking. I've connected my unit to the network without any issues, which allows me to stream content from different computers in the house directly to the device. The remote control is a bit small for my taste, but it's not really a problem. Overall it's a nice, quality device with plenty of features and an easy user interface.

I love this thing. It's made my life so much easier. I used to have to hook my laptop up to my computer to watch movies/tv shows or listen to music. It was finicky from the moment I plugged it in. After a while I could get the usb to be recognized on each of an xp, a vista and a w7. However, neither the HDMI nor the composite seem to generate a signal that either a hdmi tv or a regular tv input (rca jacks) will show. If I can't use this with a TV - why is it a media drive? I need help or an RMA on this unit.

For my personal use, it is better than having bought a Blue-ray writer.
I did not even know that such a thing existed before finding out on that wonderful B&H site. Thanks, B&H.
I am most satisfied with this purchase, but there are two things that LaCie
should have insisted about or corrected:
1- the unit should aiways stay connected to the powerline, in a stand-by
function, otherwise malfunction will occur at a future showing.
2-Even after reading about how to upgrade, I could not do anything about
it. LaCie should have developed its information in a more explicit way.
(I use a iMac computer).
All in all, this is wonderful quality instrument and I can"t imagine being without it. Yes, I would buy it again and again.

I love this device. It reads all video files with and without subtitles. So far I haven't found a file format that LaCinema would not understand. The device is great looking, runs quietly, and offers excellent streaming features. I love the user interface, it's well designed and easy to use. The unit remembers where you were in a video file if you have to stop and resume viewing the file after some time. 1TB is great. It allows me to use it for video and back up some of my data over the network.

First of all, install the latest firmware.
I like the high capacity of the hard drive, the looks and the usability.
I don't like the remote because it is poor quality (hope it will last a reasonable time).
There is a slite delay for the hard drive to respond when using the remote. (that's a bit annoying)
Also, there should have integrated a power switch and a battery.
It is still a very good product.

I've been watching video on my computer screen for a very long time until I've discovered LaCinema. The difference is incredible. To start with the quality of video and audio is outstanding. Clearly watching on the 15" laptop screen has nothing to do with full HD TV experience. The setup is convenient too. I can drag and drop the video files that I want to watch to LaCinema via the network or stream directly from my computer via LaCinema to the big screen. And it makes sense not just for video, but also for photos and music.

I have been using this product for several months now and I am very happy with it. Previously I've been using a non-HD version of this product and the difference is just spectacular: the video quality via HDMI cable is outstanding. This device supports videos with resolution higher than 720x576, the user interface is very nice, the network feature is great, it allows to steam anything to from anywhere on the network. The device runs cool and quiet. I've noticed on LaCie site that they've just released the new firmwire update, which looks to be pretty cool as now I can copy, move or delete files from the internal HDD and on the connected drives and watch Picasa albums directly on the TV screen! Also another new cool feature is that you can use any device with an internet browser, such as an iPhone, as a remote control. I'm extremely happy with this product.
