The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens is a large-aperture lens with a maximum f/stop of f/2.8 in wide angle setting. The large zoom range of this 4x zoom lens (equivalent range of approx. 25.5-105mm when used with a Sony digital SLR camera) makes it ideal as an everyday large-aperture lens. In addition, the minimum focus distance of 8.7" along with the maximum magnification of 1:2.7 also makes the lens perfect for close-up photography.
The lens' Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a quiet and high-speed auto focus, while its rounded, seven-blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur when shooting at wide apertures. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or for any digital SLR camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:
On my APS sized sensors, this lens is wide enough for group shots, long enough for portraits and it's reasonably fast. Focus is great and the HSM is super quiet. Just a bit snug the first time or two I mounted the lens to the body, but that was it.

Wanted something that could replace kit lens from Sony A350 that would also enhance my new A580 body. Love this lens for my prime lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:
I recomend this as an excellent replacement over the lens kit. Fast focus (Ultrasonic motor), good image quality.
I planed for a time to buy a DSLR around 1k$ price. I liked the Canon t2i and Sony A55.
I have tried both with the kit lenses and I loved the Sony tilt screen, but the lens was slow focusing.
I opted to finally buy a Sony A55 body with a Third party ultra-sonic motor => Sigma17-70.
The lens focuses fast, my gues is about 0.5seconds.
Image quality is perfect for my taste.
I have tried on a soccer game, and is prety usefull, I would have love-it to go to 100-150mm though.
What I like less is moving focusing ring while in autofocus. If your finger is on the ring, you will hear a high pitch, while the lens motor tries to move the ring.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:
very versatile lens. good for landscapes and indoor shots with flash. really impressed with close focus/macro capabilities. i have gotten some very sharp flower and insect shots with it. i have been using my dedicated macro less often since i got this lens. i heard that colors weren't as sharp but I haven't noticed that at all. sometimes in low light it will hunt for focus. in normal conditions i have had no problem with speed or accuracy of focus. i think it's a great step up from the kit lens and a good value. especially if you are unsure if you really need a dedicated macro lense. this one might be good enough.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:
Bought this lens before the price hike - paid 350 new. For the money, (even after the price increase I would think), is a great lens, way better than any kit lens. Very sharp throughout, lets in a good amount of light, useful macro at all ranges, very light. The range is satisfactory for walk arround: the wide angle is sweet and the tele, although not bringing you telescope close, is adequate for anything but wild life.
Had some concerns regarding sigma build quality but mine works great and failed to break after extensive use in all sort of conditions without babying it. It has a very mild decentering deffect at wide open, softer right upper corner visible only when shoting a brick wall and looking at enlarged shots but unnoticeable on field shots.
Not my favorite lens - involves little compromises, obviously the quality does not match expensive primes- but most usefull, stays pretty much glued to my A200 and goes on vacation everytime I go! (along with a M50 1.7 and a M100-200 or 70-210 makes for a good quality kit - better quality immages than a 18-250- light and cheap enough so that I don't sweat if it gets stolen)

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital Cameras:
Lens is incredible: well built, great OS, great clarity, silent and fast auto focus.
However, there are a few drawbacks that are making me return this lens: very tight fit on camera, focus ring is very loose, and worst of all it's auto focus is off. I had heard that the lens suffered from front-focus on Canons, turns out it does on Sony Alphas as well.
