The 1TB Hard Disk Quadra from LaCie is a high-capacity drive with a quad interface. It can connect to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400, or USB 2.0. The drive is capable of burst transfer rates of up to 90MB/sec when connected via FireWire-800, making it an excellent choice for performance-intensive applications.
It is housed in a black case with a glowing blue LED emanating from beneath the front of the drive. This striking design by Neil Poulton is sure to look good on any desk. The drive is bundled with backup software for Windows and Mac systems. LaCie also includes access to the Wuala online storage service with the drive.

I got this to replace my old portable drive since I recently moved all my photos to an external drive. My old portable USB drive has become too slow for Lightroom catalog. I wanted something with fast firewire connection and the lowest price I found was this one at B&H, my always trusted store. It's a beautifully designed drive. It has no fan and operates quietly. It was very easy to set up and easy to use on my laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The instruction came with the drive (if you really need it) was very clear as well.
I would have given this drive 5 stars if my experience with the firewire connection went smoothly. Connecting the drive using USB was super easy. However, I would like to take advantage of the firewire speed so I connected the drive's firewire 800 port to my Sony Vaio's 4-pin firewire port (i-link). It didn't really work. When I tried to copy a large amount of data, It was fast at the beginning but then It slowed down and stopped working. I'm not blaming this problem on the drive itself. It might just be Sony's i-link, or I just had bad luck with a bad 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable. By giving 4 stars, I'm not telling this nice drive doesn't deserve 5, I give it just because of my not so good experience. I've just ordered an Expresscard eSATA adapter to use the eSATA port instead. I hope It will work. Anyone who wants to use the drive's firewire connection on a Sony computer should be aware of my issue.

It looks nice, seems to work fine, has great connection options - firewire 400/800, USB, esata - but it is quite noisy, especially when powering up. It makes a constant whining sound when it's running that some people may not mind that much but when you turn it off and the noise stops you realize just how loud and annoying it was. It's fine for me though because I'm only using it in the field to offload P2 cards from my HVX200A and it works fine for that because it is one of the few hard drives still available with a firewire port. Anyone else buying it for this purpose just note that the drive has firewire 800 ports and the HVX200 has a firewire mini port so you will need to buy an adapter cable. I ordered the Belkin cable from B&H for [$] and it works great. (see recommended items)

I needed to upgrade so I heard the LaCie were the best for mac computers. I plugged this one in and it automatically started the set up process. All I had to do was select mac as my platform. I bought the extra 2 replacement because it was such a good deal but I have a feeling that this hard drive will last a long time. Definitely worth the money. I plan to get a LaCie when I grow out of this one.

When I was little, I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now I know that black monolith was a huge LaCie Quadra hard drive containing all the secrets of the universe. Early man went ape over it, as you may recall. Modern man will likewise react the same. When I unpacked it, I felt like breaking bones in front of it and screaming silently while Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra (opus 30) played in the background.Seriously - what's not to like, here? Great price, [...], quiet, fast, and this understated elegant design. I like the way the blue light reflects off whatever surface the disk is on; the indirect ambient lighting design is pretty cool. The light pulses quickly when disk access occurs.I had to read up on the designer, since Neil Poulton's name is so ubiquitously mentioned. It turns out this guy has quite a resume, having received many awards and recognition. You have probably seen some of his other work - such as those rugged-looking orange-bumpered portable hard drives at Best Buy/Staples/etc.My only complaint is that this Quadra drive tends to be a bit of a dust magnet, and the black-lacquer finish shows every dust particle. Not a huge issue, but a reality you don't anticipate until you open it up. Imagine if the black monolith in "2001" was dusty - it would have certainly detracted from the drama.Martha Stewart moment here: I recommend you clean off the dust with a dampened soft cloth, then dry with another very clean dry soft cloth. Using only dry dust cloths will likely result in hazing the surface.

Got this at the same time as my scanner to have a dedicated place to store the scans. My experience with LaCie products has been great so I was ok buying a hard drive with a plastic case. It comes with 4 cables: USB 2.0, Firewire 400 to 800, Firewire 800 to 800, and eSata, plus the power supply.

I use this to back up original RAW files for my photography business. When I download from my camera, I send a duplicate of every image to back up on this drive while also downloading a set simultaneously to my computer's hard drive. I can tell a big difference from my previous external HD which was USB 2.0. I took it out of the box, set it up, and it has been silently doing its job without complaint ever since. Nice and quiet and the little blue light lets you know it's working but it's not annoying.Only bad thing I can think of is it's nice and shiny but collects dust and finger prints really badly, but I don't care. It's been awesome so far!!

i'm a professional photography generating a significant amount of images on a regular basis. i use this hd to backup not only my image files, but actually all the data that's on my mac pro. i'm thrilled with it so far, the speed is great, i love that it comes with several connection options. it's also attractive, low profile, quite and doesn't get warm to the touch. i will buy another.

Purchased this drive to use with time machine and it was super easy to set up, runs very quiet, and does exactly what its supposed to do. It does run a bit warm at times so we will see how it holds up but for the price i think it was a very good buy. I would reccommend this drive!!

I use this drive as a secondary backup (Apple Time Capsule is my primary, automated backup). I really love that it has so many interfaces - FireWire, USB, and eSata. The design isn't as attractive as it looks in pictures. Once it's on your desk it's just a black box, but who cares!

The one drawback is the slightly higher price for this drive. If you can get over that hurdle, this drive sports USB 2.0, Firewire 800 and eSATA interfaces, rather than jut USB on the cheaper drives. If your computer can support these other options, your drive will transfer much faster with less overhead on the computer itself. The design is stunning, and LaCie has always been a reliable company in my experience. Comes with all the cables you will ever need.

I bought this in order to back up my macbook pro with time machine. I plugged it into my Macbook pro with a firewire800 cable, and it immediately asked me if I would like to use that drive for Time Machine. I clicked "yes" and it immediately started backing up my machine. Whenever I plug it in, Time Machine updates very quickly. I wish everything was that simple.

Super fast when connected via FireWire.. Was expecting more from eSATA but maybe I'm doing something wrong. The only thing that is bothering me is that it only allocates 32gigs for windows/mac transfers.
With the huge capacity and low price, this drive cant be beat.
