The 2TB Hard Disk MAX Quadra External Hard Drive from LaCie is a high-capacity hard drive array with an interface that allows it to connect to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400, or USB 2.0. A USB expansion port is present, allowing you to connect an external hard drive or flash drive for backup.
The drive features a stunning design by Neil Poulton. Its minimalist black form is accented by a glowing blue LED strip which creates an ambient glow at the front of the drive.
As it is a two-disk array, the drive can be configured in a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration. RAID 0 ("FAST") stripes the two disks together so that they act as a single disk. This allows data to be written to both physical disks simultaneously, greatly improving performance speed. The downside is that, since the disks are treated as a single volume, if one hard disk fails all data will be lost. RAID 0 is ideal for use in environments where performance and capacity are paramount.
Alternatively, configure the drive as a RAID 1 ("SAFE") and data is mirrored to each physical disk. This creates a real-time copy of all information, at the cost of storage capacity and performance. As everything is being written twice, the array is only capable of holding half of its physical capacity. RAID 1 is ideal for storage of critical data.
When configured as a RAID 0 and connected via FireWire-800 or eSATA the drive can achieve burst data transfer speeds of up to 80MB/sec. It is capable of 30MB/sec via USB 2.0 and 35MB/sec via FireWire-400. Backup software for Mac OS X and Windows is included.

I have one of these and liked it enough to recommend a client to buy two of them for himself. The fact that there is FW800, FW400, eSATA, and USB 2.0 is great as it makes it very versatile. I edit video about 30 hours a week and this has been great.
I use it in Raid 0 and I have another 2TB Lacie Hard Drive backing this one up with the Intego Backup Manager that is free with the drives.
I have an iMac and have this drive connected with FW800 and it is very quick when editing HD or SD. When doing multi-clip editing in Final Cut Pro with HD footage, it can get a bit sluggish. However, it still works fine.
It's actually very quiet so I'm not sure if the other reviewers who complained about the sound have a defective unit or not.
Every few weeks, if I have left the drive on for a couple days, the fan will get louder. But usually if I give it a rest for five minutes then switch it back on it's quiet again.
I have not used the eSATA with the RAID 0 but I'm sure it's quite fast, and for this price it's one of the best deals i've found

I bought this drive hoping to use the 2 drive system to mirror the data I would store on it. The drive did not mount to my MAC OS 10.6.5 so I had to contact LACIE support and then wait 24 hours for a response. Then I had to run a process that took 4 hours of computer time. I still don't have this working as I had hoped and waiting for my next inquiry to be answered by tech support.
I have owned other Lacie drives and found them to be user friendly so not sure what the problem is here.

Comments about LaCie 2TB Hard Disk MAX Quadra External Hard Drive:
A 2 TB hard drive that so far seems reliable; however, was a pain to set up for mac, gives off a nonstop high-pitched noise, and seems to slow down my mac. I also own several of LaCie's rugged drives, which appear to be of much higher quality.

Store HD p2 files for video editing. Like using the firewire connection for fast speeds. Works well with my Mac. The only down fall is it runs a little loud.

Comments about LaCie 2TB Hard Disk MAX Quadra External Hard Drive:
The proud owner of 16 external hard drives (I produce and edit an educational television show), I've used several brands... and nothing that I have can compare to the Poulton-designed drives. This is my fourth. Never a problem with my last three, so when space was getting short, there was never a consideration of any other drive. With two terabytes, it might be a while until I run out of space again... but when I do, it'll be another Poulton for sure.

I use the LaCie 2TB Max Quadra in Raid 1 configuration as my main back-up storage.
It is easy to set up with the included software and performs very well. However, the fans in this unit can be considered noisy depending on the acoustical environment.
I want a 4TB version for the future.

This Hard-drive is perfect for backing up literally a whole tower. Its one monster of a storage drive. Slick, sturdy design, but not too heavy. Great alternate media ports for different types of transfers.
I have a few weeks and used a few times. No problems to really talk about except the fact it went to sleep a few times after a really long transfer when I had left it alone. Which was a bit of an issue but nothing that couldn't be fixed by monitoring it.
Its basically perfect for Videographer and photographer like myself that have a lot of files and footage to store.

Comments about LaCie 2TB Hard Disk MAX Quadra External Hard Drive:
I fairly recently got this one when I was looking to buy a new 2TB hard drive, since it had excellent reviews for reliability, good price for the amount of space and options, and as an added bonus, looks pretty nice on my desk. I needed to get a new bigger external hard drive because I'm an editor who needs a lot of space for video files, generally edit footage right off the hard drive, and it always works perfectly. Fast response, has never lagged, and plenty of space to hopefully last me a while. Plus, it's nice to have all of the different connection options, I generally use the Firewire 800, but the others are great for if you have other computers, prefer other ways, or if you want to hook two external drives together.

I bought two of these. One is for my back up and the second one is for DIT use on RED camera shoots. One major problem with this hard drive is the noise. It is loud. But, I have now 5 lacie black box drives and they work hard and look good in my office.

I have had this HD hooked up for the last month now and so far so good. Set up was easy but like most external drives the cables that come with it are way to short. It is a little on the loud side but nothing that will drives you nuts. I recommand at the [$] price.

Comments about LaCie 2TB Hard Disk MAX Quadra External Hard Drive:
This is a great hard drive for anyone running pro apps on their computer. I leave all of my Logic session files on this drive which leaves the HD in my MacBook Pro to run Logic. This helps out performance, plus I have it set to RAID1 (safe) mode so I don't have to worry losing Data. Besides using it for Logic I also use it as a time machine backup. I have backups of my computer from the day I got it on here and theres still plenty of space left! I was also pleased when I opened the box and found every cable I would ever need! (USB, Firewire 800, FW800-400,and eSATA) This was a great drive and a great value. The only downside is the corners are sharp and if you aren't careful you may cut yourself.
