The 500GB Rikiki Portable Hard Drive from LaCie is an extremely compact portable hard drive, compatible with Mac and Windows systems. The Rikiki, which takes its name from the French for "tiny," is housed in a stylish brushed aluminum casing for enhanced durability.
The drive ships with USB Boost software for Windows, which can increase transfer speeds by up to 33%. LaCie is a good company that stands behind their stuff. I'd buy again, but there'll probably be a thimble-sized terra drive I can stick in my ear by then!

I am currently an audio production major and for my line of work I always need to back up my files when I am working on projects. My friend who is a photography professional showed my this portable hard-rive and how easy it was to use and you literally can put it in you pocket if your on the go. I love the fact that I can have it with me all the time and have a great storage space free for me to put anything on it. I bought it literally the same day he showed me it and received it in about a day or two in the mail. Making me want to buy more things off of B&H.

Had to reformat for my old imac, but it works fine and fairly fast. I use it to back up my files and photos from past years. My computer and another old external drive are about 12 years old so figured I should have some insurance.

After comparing prices, reviews, and different external drives on Amazon and Apple website, this by far was worth buying. EASY and rather simple to use on my 2007 Black MacBook.
The ONLY complaint I have is, the USB cord is way too short and you can ONLY use it one way, which puts the drive in an upside down position. I cannot figure out how else to attach the USB cord as one end only goes in one into the drive and another into the computer. Strange. But I still love it.

Travelling a lot and working on 3 computers (1 Mac, 2 Windows) I need to have all my informations in a simple, small and robust HDD. As I often meet with customers, I also need this HDD to look awesome.
With LaCie 500GB Rikiki I found the product I was looking for. I split it in 2 250 Gb for Mac, 250 gb for Windows and these to parts can work together!

It is compact, and a great price. I would recommend it.
The two things I don't like, which aren't a big deal, are that it is louder than my other older Lacie (but not that loud) and the design of the USB cord, it is a bit awkward. But seems like a good product for a great price.

The packaging said it was compatible with any Mac 10 OS, but it froze immediately upon connection and I had to manually disconnect it. I then used disk utility to reformat the disk (MAC OS extended with journaling), causing me to lose the installed manual. Thereafter it continued to malfunction, freezing often and performing very slowly. After a couple of days of this, I gave up and arranged for a return. Usually Lacies work well for me. Either I got a dud, or this is just not compatible with 10.4.

This harddrive is a good brand for a really good price. It's the cheapest 500gb I could find, and yet it's got a nice, tiny design and is made of aluminum, not plastic.
The only con is the extremely short and inflexible usb cord, but I think that's fairly standard in portable harddrives nowadays.
Another small thing to note is that on newer Macs (Intel chip Macs), the install software isn't compatible to set up the drive. The fix is extremely simple, though, and I was able to find instructions with a single Google search. Just format through Disk Utility.

Does the job. I would have given it five stars except that in order to set it up on my OS Lion I had to find a website and follow directions. I was not able to bring up the installer when I plugged it in.

I use a pair of these drives with my laptop, one to hold my catalog of digital photos, one to back that up. The drives don't take up much space but provide a lot of storage. Very easy to set up, and the included backup software works well.

I use this as an expansion drive on a Digital Foci device. It seems to be fast enough for my uses. I had to reformat it to fat32, which was quick and easy on my Macbook Pro.
It does include a really short USB cable (about 6 inches), which is actually really useful to me; mainly for my CF card reader. But you may not like it.
It's usb port is on the side, which is fine for me, but may be bad for other.
It's made of aluminum, and has sharp edges (I don't think you could cut yourself though, but maybe?). The tight shape makes it fit in foam of my Pelican case really well.

I have this plugged in for daily Time Machine back ups. It works great so far, and is incredibly compact, especially in comparison to my other external hard drives. It came pre-formatted for Mac, so all I had to do was connect it and turn on Time Machine. Perfect.
