Sony's DCR-SR68 80GB Handycam Camcorder is an 80GB hard disk drive (HDD) standard definition camcorder that also provides the option of recording to Memory Stick Media or SD/SDHC memory cards. While the HDD on the SR68 can hold up to 61 hours of video (SD LP mode), you can store even more footage using optional memory cards. These media options also enable transfer of video and still images from the hard drive to Memory Stick or SD cards for easy upload to your computer.
A budget-friendly SD cam, the SR68 packs in a number of features and functions. A 2.7" Clear Photo LCD with a touch panel and 270° of rotation helps you to easily compose and play back your shots, while the 1/8" Advanced HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD image sensor captures quality video and still images. Sony's partnership with the legendary Carl Zeiss optics company provides a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens that features SteadyShot image stabilization. The lens is made from precision ground optics for high quality image capture, while the image stabilization provides a reduction in the blur that's caused by motion, more commonly referred to as camera shake. Another core feature is the 60x optical zoom which captures distant subjects with clarity.
Some user-friendly functions that simplify recording with the SR68 include Face Detection, Film Roll Index, and the Face Index functions. While Face Detection automatically adjusts for exposure and focus on up to 8 faces in a frame, Film Roll and Face Index give you alternate ways to find the scenes you desire, faster. Additional convenience functions include an LED video light for low light video capture, automatic Power On when you open the LCD screen, and Direct Copy to an external hard drive (optional) without having to use a PC.

The image quality is not professional quality but is great for the family and travel videos that I bought this camcorder for. Its small size makes is very easy to keep with me all the time; it even fits into my SLR bag when I want everything with me. And, it is very simple to operate; my wife had no trouble is getting some nice video clips the first time she used it.
I do recommend getting a larger battery as well as the travel charger since it it much smaller than the unit included with the camcorder. The filter is easier to clean than the lens and provides some protection as well. And, the snap in lens cap provides protection when the camcorder is bouncing around in a bag (just make sure that your filter is front threaded). Although the camera has an 80GB hard drive, I puchased a 32GB SDHC card because I do not have to carry a USB cord to download my clips into my laptop or desktop computer plus it saves the battery as well.
I cannot comment on the included Sony software because I have not used it. I download the videos directly into my computers and use Abobe Premier Elements 8 for editing.
In summary I am very pleased with my Handycam - it does it's job well and is really handy!

I use the cameras primarily for long (40 hours+) recording of wildlife for a thesis project. I record at lowest quality and I can tell what food a bird brings to its young, so the quality is much better than similar systems that use security cams. The main downside is that the camera turns off after 13 hrs, so I have to keep turning it on.

Great LCD viewfinder and menus. I like it that the lens closer is manual instead of those automatic ones that always fail. This has a ton of features for a Standard Definition camera, but the nicest is the easy upload to either Mac or PC. Would recommend getting a card reader to make the process easier, but still easy the way it is. Sound is fine and has external mic capability. Also, huge Optical Zoom.

We're a rental house and this is one of our low end cameras. I've been test driving this thing in comparison with Panasonic SDR-H40 (latest version, SDR-H100) and it's better than the Panny. We bought this after checking the reviews which suggested this was the best camera in its class and opted for this over the Panasonic SDR-H100 or the SDR-H80 and glad for it.
Touch screen does get finger-printy very quickly, though. Wish the menu system was a little bit more intuitive, for example I can't drop and scroll up with my finger like I can on my touch screen smartphone. Instead I've to press tiny buttons.
Also, wish the light could be turned on WHILE recording, and that it was about two times brighter. But a handy little feature on a consumer level camcorder. Not very good in low light, overall, even with the little light.
Also, please note the battery is charged while in the camera. You'd either have to get an external charger or have lots of spare batteries that are charged up. Unfortunately this can mean a shoot has to stop while you charge the battery.

Bought it for family personal use so that handy for everyone to carry and operate. Easy to shoot and take pictures and 80 GB is a sufficient space. Its LCD is so clear and accurate as naked eye and is rotatable. Light weight and fits in fist. Built looks tough. I think I made a smart choice. :)

It is compact, great features. We can have a video with for about 10 -13 hrs continuously if connected by power cord. The product has Power cord, Li Battery, Warranty 2yr(which I took for safety), instructions book and CD to install drivers.
