Canon's FS300 Flash Memory Camcorder (Silver) is an affordable standard definition cam that records up to 20 hours of video to removable SD/SDHC memory cards (20 hours per 32GB card). The FS300 uses Canon technologies such as the DIGIC DV II Image Processor, a 1/6" CCD sensor, 41x Advanced Zoom, and Dynamic Image Stabilization to help you capture your memories in sharp detail. Other useful features like the 2.7" LCD display and the built-in video light further aid in getting just the right shot.
In addition, the FS300 also gives you the ability to capture short 4 second video clips that can be set to music, and are ideal for Internet sharing. You can also capture 786k still images with the FS300 either in still mode or while recording video with Canon's Dual Shot mode. Other user-friendly features like Quick Start, Pre-Record, and Portrait mode all come in handy when shooting, making it easy for you to focus on the moment.
In addition to the advantage of added recording time, you'll appreciate the quick response time of flash memory because it doesn't have to wait for moving parts. Another plus is the FS300's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It's just what you need so you don't miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say "I do." And if the FS300 happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss due to damage to your recording media or the moving parts found in other camcorders

I have been waiting a long time to get this camcorder and write a review on it. Let me just say that I am extremely happy with it. It is very easy to use. I did extensive research and read countless reviews on Standard Definition Flash Memory camcorders of all brands. Nothing could compare to the reviews and reputation of Canon. I was considering getting the FS200 because it had GREAT reviews, but decided to wait until the 300 came out. I was told by Canon reps that the 300 has some technical and processing upgrades that the layperson would not understand. I will break my review down for an easier read. WHAT I AM REPLACING: I am replacing a 2 year old Panasonic mini DV 3CCD camera. Anyone that knows about camcorders knows 3CCD is the choice of professionals and offers the best picture quality. It is what they shoot commercials and movies with. And that camera did its job, but I was tired of all the rewinding, and fast forwarding. Having to search for a blank spot on the tape, dealing with tape cases, labels, etc. I hated having to hook up all kinds of power cords and transfer cords to my computer to bring the video over. I was tired of having to wait second by second for the video to transfer. If you had a 3 hour video, it took 3 hours to upload. VIDEO QUALITY: Well I was a bit concerned the quality of the FS300 would not match compared to my Panasonic 3CCD. I shot 10 minutes of video of the same subjects in different light settings with each camera at their highest quality settings. I uploaded them to my video editing software, burned onto disk and played on my 50 inch plasma TV. The video quality of the Canon is EQUAL yes EQUAL to the 3CCD camera! The FS300 looks fantastic! Not grainy or digital looking at all. The inside recording is even better than my Panasonic. There are a lot of ways to get around the reviews of dark grainy video inside in poor lit areas by adjusting the settings, but I left mine on auto and it looked pretty good. It is not going to be perfect in low lit areas. No Standard Definition camera is going to. SOUND QUALITY: The sound is great! Picks up a lot but not too much where you cannot hear what you intended on recording. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE FS300. Ok so here is what I love about this camcorder. First and foremost I LOVE being able to record video and pop the SD card into my computer and import the video in seconds. No hooking up wires or power cords. No matter how long my video is it only takes a seconds to upload it. Keeping track of SD cards is easier than mini DV tapes. There are some negative reviews about the .MOD files that the camcorder records as. I am running windows 7 and media player, and all the other players play it no problem first time! My editing software plays it no sweat. I am using Cyberlink Power Director 7 for that. The price was right in my ball park. I found it for [$]. The picture quality is FANTASTIC! The 2000x zoom in incredible. I like the small size, it is light weight, compact. I like the easy user friendly menus that canon offers on their electronics. The button layout is very nice. I like the energy saving features so your battery does not run down so fast. I like that it tells you how many minutes of recording time you have left until your battery runs out. Totally convenient. It has very few moving parts inside. I like the automatically open and close lens cover. The image stabilization is outstanding. If you zoom really far you will need a tripod for stability. That is across the board with any camera on the market. There are many more features that make this camera a great value..LEARNING CURVES: It did take about 30 minutes of playing around and reading the manual to fully understand the menus and all the functions. Not too bad at all.WHAT I RECOMMEND: I was told by Canon to get a Class 4 or higher SDHC memory card for this camera. It does not matter what capacity card you get make sure it is a class 4 or higher. That is the transfer speed of the memory card and is the minimum they recommend to keep up with the speed of the camcorder. I have (4) 8GB class 4 SDHC cards. I will have anywhere between 10-20 hours of recording time there depending on the settings.. Plenty for me. I would recommend a second battery as well. This just is a must for camcorders in general. OVERALL: Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this camcorder to anyone. The picture quality, size, features, sound, price, style, are outstanding. I am extremely satisfied with this camera. You will NOT be disappointed.

It's light - it's easy to use - it'll fit anywhere! The one thing is the zoom - the auto focus only goes so far, so it'll zoom in far, but I cannot get it to focus. We do really like it, though.

We use this to record all the kid's activities. It has a great picture and sound. It also takes still pictures. I have taken a few, but have not printed them yet, so I can not speak to the quality. When looking for a camcorder, I read the reviews and there was one where a professional had purchased one and was very happy. I would agree that I am very happy with it too. One thing I have not figured out is how to get better picture quality in low light. I purchased an SDHC card. If you are a busy parent, get one that is 8GB or larger. I purchased a little case logic bag with it and are very happy I did. Everything fits in it; light and easy to carry. I did not purchase, but am going to get a second battery for it. If you are a parent sitting in the stands, I also suggest buying a monostand that is light and easy or you are holding the camcorder up for entire games.

This is a great little camcorder as we used to have a great big monstrosity that was so heavy it was hard to use. This will fit in the palm of your hand. We are using it for vacations and videos of our grandkids.
The manual that came with it has very small print and doesn't follow along the same pages as the disk that came with it.

Video looks sharp at first test. Unit was smaller than I expected. Learning curve for buttons and controls will be more involved that expected. Wish there was a User's Guide included rather than having to download a copy and finding somewhere to print it...116 page PDF file! Did not include SD card, so had to find one of those. For price, I think after I learn how to record and make DVD's, it will be a good buy. Wish it didn't make separate file every time you record - cannot add to recording like on tapes.

I'm sitting in a hotspot in Las Brisas..Panama City Panama...I got it last week sent from the States to Panama...I have spent a week reading the very explicit and easy to understand handbook...no hurry.. I NEVER operated a camcorder before...it's my intention to make movies as I am sailing with my crew across the Pacific..First to the Galapagos...then French Polynesia and then eventually arriving in Australia 9 months later..Leaving March 1.
I am really looking foward to learning to use it properly under fire...As I write it is being charged for the first time..It's a Cannon..a quality product. I bought it based upon the other comments I have read and glad that I had.
The software loaded easily in my Windows Home 7 operating system on two disks as well as a more detailed manual on another disk.. what I'm impressed with at this early stage, everything seems to be done well..and I couldn't have beat the [price..Always have gotten great deals at B & H.

Video is quite good given it is NOT HD. There is a lot of information and mis-information all over the web concerning whether this video format *.MOD is compatible with Mac OS. The short answer is yes, but.Yes, imovie version 8 and above will recognize the Mod file and allow me to work in iMovie. BUT, I also use iMovie 4 which does NOT recognize the Mod format. There appear to be lots of third-party software to convert *.Mod file to an mpeg-4 file which my version of iMovie 4 recognized.I am satisfied with the camcorder - paid [$] shortly before Christmas, now it is available in local stores for this same price.

Did lots of research before buying this camcorder as a gift. Recipient is learning to use and enjoying the learning process. Tells me it has many things to study and learn..how to watch video on tv etc, but is not overwhelmed and anxious to try. The magnification is superb. Filmed horses in pasture from inside house and even their eyes were clear.
