Canon's VIXIA HF R10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder is an entry-level HD camcorder with numerous features and functions to help you with the recording process every step of the way. The HF R10 captures 1920 x 1080 HD video to an internal 8GB flash memory or to SD/SDHC memory cards, including Eye-Fi SD memory cards. In addition to recording MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video, the HF R10 also captures 2MP digital stills.
At the core of the HF R10 you'll find a Genuine Canon 20x HD Video Lens, a 2.39MP HD CMOS Image Sensor, and Canon's DIGIC DV III Image Processor. Other features, like 20x optical zoom, Dynamic Image Stabilization, and a 2.7" LCD give you the tools you need to record your video with accuracy.
Among the numerous user-friendly applications of the HF R10 you'll find 24p and 30p recording. 24p gives your video a film-look, while 30p is ideal for shooting action footage and posting to social networking sites. Other beneficial applications include Face Detection, Quick Start, and Pre-Record modes. And last, but certainly not least, the HF R10 features microphone and headphone connections for recording quality audio using an optional external mic and headphones.
The advantages of flash memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because there are no moving parts. In addition, when you review, you'll have quick access to your footage. Another plus is the VIXIA HF R10's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. And if your HF R10 happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock-resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss if there is damage to your recording media or to the moving parts found in other camcorders 1
In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature can be used to search for clips featuring that specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. The selected face can be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing that subject
In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF R10 to capture video in 30p Progressive Mode, (30 progressive frames, recorded at 60i) which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. Excellent for action and sports shots, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording

I am taking this to travel to India. It is tiny- I was shocked at how small it is. However, the video quality is excellent, and even quite decent in low light...a big deal for me. The zoom works well and image stabiization is decent as well.
The zoom button could be a bit better placed but works well enough...just a bit awkwardly placed. The housing could also be metal instead of plastic. It would be heavier though more solid and durable. Get an extra battery though...they do not last like camera batteries. Overall, this one is hard to beat at this price-point, and an excellent choice. The clear LCD is an added bonus.

I bought this to use to video my daughter playing basketball. I am used to a regular video camera that just tapes, but you get used to it.
It is easy to use, but downloading to my laptop was a little complicated at first.
It is a little more expensive than I think it should be though.
I have recommended it to a friend and he bought it the next week.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (Silver):
AF noise was too much to handle and impossible to get rid of so, I had to RMA it and order VIXIA HF40 MiniHDV camcorder.
Files have to be converted before use on Mac - another headache.
Camcorder is too much on a consumer side.

I did a little research on camcorders before stopping at B&H in order to make the best selection for my use and price range. [...] The camcorder performed very nicely and the price was great (a lot less than my budget).

Like the time-lapse and long recording time.
Would like it to record with the screen closed, there's several out there that don't even have a screen.

I bought this camera to take videos of the family. When looking for a camera I wanted something that worked with premier pro and works great. I don't have any problems with it so far. Great camera at a low price.

We use this camcorder for home use and find it
easy to use. It records very good quality videos
and pictures. I can't find how to see a copy of a picture immediately after shooting it to see if is worth saving. I may not be familiar with all the settings yet.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (Silver):
We use this camcorder in a school. Students immediately began using it when it arrived. We added a Rode external microphone to enhance audio. History students used it for the first week and the interviews recorded came out great. Students found it easy to save their videos (saved on the 8Gb on board memory) by connecting the camcorder to one of our library or lab computers. This made short work of something that used to be very tedious. Some students even brought in their own SD memory cards so they could immediately take their work home for editing. The ease of use and good quality of recording made this unit perfect for us. This thing can REALLY zoom in from far away! we can't wait to try it during sporting events.

I just got this camcorder and so far it looks great. Great audio with an external mic, and a headphone jack. Can shoot in auto or manual. The part I struggled with though was that the software that came iwth it is only for windows users, not photojournalist like me with macs. I wish someone had written that in the review. You are abl eto dowload the video with iMovie or Final CUt Pro, but obviously Final Cut Pro will be a little better.

I had a previous version of this camera and upgraded so I could have HD format. It works very similar to my older model, so was easy to adjust, is small, lightweight, has a mic jack so I can plug in my wireless mic, and some cool features - great buy!

Camera does what it is supposed to do. Takes brilliant video. Pictures are so-so. In low-light an external light is useful.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (Silver):
This camcorder is fine if you're using it to record family events, but I was disappointed with the video quality. I returned it and got the Vixia HF M300 because I wanted better quality videos.
You'd think Canon would find a way to incorporate a higher pixel camera in it.
It was the only affordable camcorder that would allow me to attach an external shotgun mic. (I got the Canon DM-100 mic because it fits and others require an adapter.) The built-in mic is mediocre so consider spending the $175 for the mic if you want quality sound.
If you have a Mac, don't bother downloading the useless photo app that comes with it. You can use iMovie. (If it doesn't work with your iMovie, you need to upgrade your iMovie app.)
The image stabilization is fantastic.
You will need to shoot during the day or find ways to light in dark areas.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (Silver):
I give this camera a five star not only because of the price but because it has many features needed to make independent films such as the 24p feature on it and of course the head phone jack and microphone is a must if you want to get into serious filmmaking. For an independant filmmaker on a very low tight budget I definately recommend this camera to everyone starting out.

I use this camera for documentary films and short film projects. I love the 24fps with Cinema mode, it really gives that smooth Cinema feel to your projects. Great product for the price. Easy to use operator controls.
Only bad thing is the Autofocus feature has a clicking sound that will be picked up by the camera's onboard mic. In most scenes with a lot of noise the sound isn't noticeable. Easy way to get around this issue is turn off the Autofocus feature.
