The traditionally shaped Sanyo VPC-SH1 Dual Camera (Black) features high definition 1920 x 1080i video recording. In addition to HD video the SH1 also captures 10MP (interpolated, 4MP effective) stills and has a number of photo related functions for your use. No matter if you're shooting video or still the SH1 records to your choice of SD/SDHC or high capacity SDXC memory cards. The camera is also Eye-Fi compatible which means that wireless Eye-Fi SD cards can be used with the SH1 to wirelessly transmit files to a compatible computer. The SH1 also happens to be iFrame compatible as well. The iFrame video format (960 x 540/30fps) is the same format you'll shoot and edit with, making importing and editing on your Mac or PC a breeze.
When it comes to the core tools that capture all your footage the VPC-SH1 has a 35mm angle of view lens, 30x Advanced Optical Zoom for video and 23x optical zoom for photo. Image stabilization and a 2.7" rotating LCD also play an important part in realizing your creative vision. Among the many user-friendly features of the camera you'll benefit from Face Detection, Super Slow Motion mode, and easy playback on your HDTV using the mini-HDMI output. All in all the VPC-SH1 features HD capabilities and a number of useful features while remaining budget-friendly.
Using a proprietary Sanyo algorithm, the SH1 automatically compensates for distracting up-and-down or side-to-side camera movement, keeping your video and photo subjects steady and easy to follow. It accurately distinguishes between unintentional camera shake and deliberate camera movement. This handy feature operates in both wide-angle and telephoto modes
To accomplish the complexity of encoding AVC/H.264 in real-time on the SH1, a dedicated H.264 video compression IC was incorporated into the camera that was designed specifically for portable consumer devices. This achieves high video quality while simultaneously reducing the system power consumption

I was deliberating between getting this and the Canon VIXIA HF R100. I'm happy with this purchase, though I imagine the Canon would have slightly better picture quality. Despite that and not having an external mic input or a 24fps mode, I like that the Sanyo has different resolutions (I don't have to shoot 1080p if I don't want to—indeed I prefer 720p right now), 30x zoom, 300 and 600 fps shooting modes, lots of manual shooting options, and a "basic" mode for when my wife uses it.
Image stabilization works pretty well for being digital only. As a note: turn it off if shooting from a tripod/stationary position. It occasionally moves the screen when it mistakenly thinks there's movement.
The battery should easily last you over 2 hours of shooting. I got a cheap (overseas) backup just in case. I also got a cheap mini HDMI to HDMI cable to plug this directly into a tv (during playback or recording).
A class 6 16gb SD card has worked fine when shooting with this on highest resolution. So no need to spend extra on a super high speed card, unless you want the large transfers back to the computer to be faster (not worth the extra cost IMHO).
I love the high frame rate recording modes. I plan on taking it to the gun range and recording some exploding jugs, etc.
It should also be noted that this thing is small! It's still fairly comfortable to use and makes for easy portability.
The sound quality seems very good for this size camera, and I'm very pleased with it. Barely any hiss/hum from the camera. It also has a couple different mic options (shotgun vs. standard mode), but I haven't noticed a difference between these two so far).
However, I'm a bit disappointed with the video and photo quality overall. The pictures it takes are comparable with a 10 year old digital camera, and are just slightly better than a smartphone's camera (the good flash is probably all that makes the difference). The video also reflects the low cost of this HD camera. A better/larger internal sensor would do this camera well. I would say the "1080p" recording, when viewed on a HD tv, looks more like 720p. I find recording at 720p isn't sacrificing much, and allows for a smaller video file. But take note that, even with every lamp and ceiling light on in the room, it still struggles with high-iso noise, and focusing in intermediate to high zooms. Outside daylight works fine, but I imagine most of my videos will be done indoors.
That being said... considering the price of this camera, I really don't have anything to complain about! This is better than any standard def camera I've used in the past, and I'm quite pleased. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

It's a very good product for size, zoom, battery and design. The only weak point is the sensor. All the INDOOR footages were pretty noisy even with all the light on. I've tried imposing a lower ISO resulting in a lower noise but the shadow contrast became so strong you can no more see people's eyes (the light was coming from above). if you are going to use it for sunny out door pourpose you should be fine.

I am looking into becoming a professional filmmaker, and I bought this camera because it had several features about it that I loved, including the HD and slow motion modes. I, for one, think it is great for people who are interested in getting into filming, but I'd imagine it'd be a nightmare for the average consumer. It has trouble working in low light (especially in the slow motion modes,) so your video will have to be adequately lit. There are also many settings on it that may confuse some consumers, such as iso and aperture size, which the camera does not do very well automatically. All in all, I've gotten great use out of this camera and would definitely recommend it.

Just bought this dual use camera and have used it in very limited applications so far, hence the 4 stars. Took it out last evening and took some video outside before, during, and after sunset. I noticed very little grain in the video, even at low light. Snapped a few photos, they looked as good as my 10mp point & shoot camera. The only down side is the hand strap, which is a bit on the narrow side to be effective. Highly recommend a tripod to carry the camera instead of the strap, less shake.
If you're looking for a good quality picture for a good price, this camera is hard to beat.

I bought this to record my kids growing and to use as a camcoder only. I was not interested on the still feature since I have full SLR gear for that. You can see few of my sample videos I have taken during the multicultural festival in Canberra Australia. [@]

After spending four months researching for a suitable low budget full HD camcorder with a dual purpose as a still camera, it became very clear that Sanyo's recent Dual Camera from the Xacti VPC series was the best option for myself.
I am a beginner at filming and mainly film Downhill Mountain Bike Riding. The 60 fps and 30X optical zoom gives a great advantage for me to produce the best videos I can.
The camcorder is extremely easy to use with a choice between manual and auto settings and features two rec/photo buttons to give the ability to hold it two different ways.
The only negative I can say after using this camcorder is that it lacks the ability to record well in low light and picks up quite a bit of wind noise when filming outdoors. No need to worry though! If your subject is well lighted and a slight amount of wind noise does not bother you than this is probably the camcorder for you!
My favorite features about the Sanyo VPC-Sh1 include;
- 30X Optical Zoom
- Full HD (1920x1080p)
- Large 2.7" LCD screen (very clear when shooting!)
- Multi purpose camera (full HD Video and 10MP Camera)
- Fits in my pocket!
- So easy to use
- Sound zoom while recording
I would suggest this camcorder to people who travel, film sports, film documentaries, Home made movies or filming important events.
NOTE!: Make sure that Your sd/sdxc/sdhc card is quick and has capacity otherwise the picture quality will be lost and it may glitch.

This is our first camcorder so I was worried we wouldn't be able to work it well. It was love at first sight! The controls are easily accessible, the picture and video quality are beyond our expectations, and the setup was quick. I'm in love with it! I'm not extremely impressed with the sound quality but we're still learning how to use the camcorder so that could be our fault.

I take pictures of grandkids/ducks/vacations. This camera is easy to use. Zoom is great. The ability to take photos while filming a movie is super. The HD quality esceeded my expectations. The low light quality is poor. Even with the flash, it wasn't up to par. Overall, I am very pleased

Given as a gift. Easy to use. Well built. Good battery life. Can take 3 and 1/2 hours of 720p video on a 16gig SDHC card. Can take a picture while filming video.
Cons: should have included mini-HDMI to HDMI cable; anti-shake feature was not very good.
