The G51Jx-A1 Notebook Computer from ASUS is a powerful 15.6" notebook computer, built to handle the intensive hardware demands that modern computer games place on a system. The computer's graphics engine is powered by the nVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M card, loaded with 1GB of GDDR5 video memory.
The system is powered by an Intel i7-720QM quad-core CPU which, coupled with the graphics card, can really push up frame rates in complex 3D video games. Thanks to Intel Turbo Boost Technology and the ASUS LevelUp function, you can overclock the system's CPU to up to 2.8GHz for enhanced performance.
Storage is handled by a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, giving you ample space for games and media. The computer boasts 6GB of RAM, a SuperMulti DVD burner, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 2MP webcam. An Altec Lansing sound system provides crisp and clear audio output for a true multimedia experience. The true 16:9 display features a 1080p native resolution for HD gaming, and you can connect to an external HD display via HDMI for play on a big screen. Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) is the installed operating system.

This is a very powerful laptop with an nVidia GTS-360M GPU that puts out some 1.7 Billion Teraflops of graphics power, which put it in 2nd place to the Asus G73JH-series as that one has the vaunted ATI-AMD 5870M that does some 2.4 Billion Teraflops. That isn't to say this is inferior, it's simply 2nd Best in the lineup, but with some great connectivity options that the G73 doesn't have it's my favorite multi-media laptop by far, and the 15.6" 1920 x 1080P Full HD LED LCD Display just makes it that much sweeter. With eSATA and FireWire (for cameras, external HD's etc) the G51 has two connections that the G73 does not, and it's not as bulky and ponderous, although at some 7 pounds or so it's no lightweight by any means. What I really, really like about this laptop without comparing it to anything is that Asus gives the user Turbo and Extreme Turbo for single and dual-core speediness, a natural overclocking that supercharges tasks using single/dual cores while you can get 1.7Ghz (1696 actual Mhz) out of 4 Cores/hyperthreaded to 8 Cores, which allows this laptop to crunch a Seti Unit or Folding@Home Work Unit with relative ease. You cannot say that about the Core2Duo machines,, therefore it's about 40-50% speedier overall vs those dated CPU's.I have used my G51JX-A1 notebook in a fashion that probably most others have not, as I upgraded the optical drive with a BluRay reader/writer/burner Slim Drive, which took all of about 10 minutes to do by the way. This laptop needs BluRay, so I gave it to mine with a new Sony Optiarc 5730S burner, and I use the BluRay feature for archiving vast photo and video libraries, and backing up Sony Vegas-made video productions/presentation, which is a phenomenal way to deal with big media! I installed Cyberlink's PowerDVD 10 Ultra so I have BluRay native player and software suites, and can play BluRay movies through the HDMI port to my Samsung HDTV's in my studio and front room. This works fantastic by the way, and I highly recommend that others upgrade their measly DVD+/-RW optical drives to BluRay--it's the way to go for this laptop, just what it lacked.I also replaced the OEM HD with a fast Vertex 2 120GB SSD from OCZ, never even turned on the OEM factory HD (removed it and stored it!) just Clean Installed the OS and drivers from the factory DVD ROM discs the way I wanted it done, ie dispensed with all and any Asus bloatware and [...]olaware, while keeping valuable utilities like Splendid and Control Deck (video and still use of the on board camera of 2.0 Megapixels). In addition I upgraded the WiFi from the OEM Atheros 5985 card to an Intel Ultimate N-6300 Dual-Band PCI-Express Mini-WiFi Card, gaining 2.4/5.8Ghz Dual Band capability, which means that I can stream media and audio-video through my WiFi at up to 450Mb/sec (megabits) vs the OEM's paltry 150Mb/sec, a triple-fold advantage! My laptop came with 6GB of 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, an upgrade to 1066Mhz RAM that is advertised on the box and the specs, but it was a supply/demand situation with Asus at the time they built my particular laptop (Jan 10, 2010) apparently, so Kudos to Asus for the upgrade! I added a 2GB 1333Mhz SODIMM to make 8GB total RAM vs OEM's 6GB RAM, so I didn't leave a stone unturned with my G51JX-A1, upgrading the HD, WiFi, optical drive and RAM.Those are simple, easy, and very beneficial upgrades to this great Core i7 720QM-based laptop that anybody can do in just a few minutes, nothing that even the technically challenged couldn't accomplish, and it has transformed my G51JX-A1 into a superb machine, without peer of any sort, be it an Apple MacBook Pro, or any other brand of PC notebook...and I emphasize this: I may have spent about $650 on my laptop but the benefits are HUGE vs OEM specs, with BluRay, a fast SSD, 8GB RAM and the Intel N-6300 Dual-Band WiFi in the house now.If you want to say that Asus screwed-up the notebook by not including a battery system that is worth considering I suppose you could say that, with its meager 60-90 minutes of run time available from the OEM 4800mAh 6-Cell battery, I mean come on, really! I opted for the 9-Cell 7200mAh upgrade there, too, which can be bought from Asus direct for about $130US or from Far East suppliers for a little less, but either way, 9-cell or 6-cell, this laptop is not one for using on battery...it eats up Li-Ion cells for lunch in short order, so that's the laptop's one blaring, glaring fault: battery run time is ridiculously short-lived, but then again who bought this to use on battery?I write software with a partner from Europe, and this laptop is a handy-dandy code-cruncher, again about 50% greater speed than even the speediest C2Duo's up to 3Ghz that are available in some laptop systems, so that's another benefit of the 720QM 1.7Ghz CPU at full-tilt Extreme Turbo setting in the P4G Control Panel, a setting that must be manually chosen as it overrides the Intel FSB (Front Side Bus) and QPI settings to overclock the CPU just about 7% total using all 4 Cores, just in case somebody out there needs an explanation about why and how the P4G Control Panel works, and why it's there in the 1st place. Any restart or shut down negates the P4G settings, and it must be chosen again upon reboot, but that's for safety reasons, so it's understandable.BlueTooth 2.1+EDR (Extended Data Rate) is a nice standard feature of the G51JX-A1, which also means that any headphone (BT) you choose will benefit from A2D2 signal processing, ie "stereo BlueTooth", so if you're like I am and put on some iTunes music and a Motorola S-9 headphone set (BT stereo headphones) so you aren't burdened by any wires, it's nice to know that your sound is enhanced just like it should be! That's something else that nobody mentioned who wrote a review here at B&H Photo Video, a feature that I use every day when multi-tasking with the laptop...BT headphones, something that everybody should try out before they say there's no use for BT!The range for the Broadcomm-based BT system is quite good at about 30-50-feet, in case you wondered, so if you are potentially using a BT pointer or mouse, or trackpad for that matter with this laptop, there's plenty of available BT power from the notebook, ie it's not a wimpy 10-15 feet as it is with many notebooks...another benefit that I discovered that has not been mentioned here. The nVidia GTS 360-M 1GB DDR5 video card can benefit from a driver update, to the new "Verde" drivers from the maker of the card to v.258.97 for example, which will give you higher frame rates in games as the drivers are much improved over the stock setup (197.16 nVidia drivers are OEM stock). I found that Crysis, Call of Duty:WAW, and GTA:IV all benefited to the tune of 5-10FPS with the newer Verde driver, and I could overclock the card easier, it is more stable and holds a higher Mhz overclocking (with nVidia Tools, or EVGA Precision, either one works great for overclocking the GPU). There is nothing to worry about when overclocking this GPU also, I might emphasize, as I routinely run 630/2100/1625Mhz in the CP's vs the stock 575/1875/1575Mhz settings without penalty or problems, and no heat problems either, as the GPU is certified to run as high as 100-degrees Celsius, while I have never seen higher than 85-90-Degrees C no matter what settings I used, or game I am playing...so the GPU has a LOT of headroom as we say...XLNT, and just what the doctor ordered for a King of the Hill laptop. The LCD has a Control Panel called "Splendid" from Asus that works great for adjusting/enhancing the viewing angle a little, by bringing out the deep blacks, browns, blues, and dark reds while contrasting colors like silver, yellow, green, white, and orange pick up "life" to boot, so check out the Splendid CP if you want the best display profile other than what nVidia CP provides. The backlit keyboard is a really nice extra that Asus includes with this laptop that makes it just that much nicer than many others, for instance those from Sony and Acer don't generally have backlit keyboards. I have found the keyboard to be almost perfect in touch, with just about a 1 mm push per letter/number, not too shallow, nor too deep I've found. The keyboard *does* have a slight amount of flex in the center, which I wish it didn't have, but overall the keyboard rates a solid 4 out of 5 stars, plenty good for a notebook...especially one with a number pad on the right side. The touch controls for P4G, Touch Pad Off/On, and various LCD options is very nice at the top of the keyboard surface, giving the user another option vs punching the keyboard or hitting a dedicated switch for those functions.I never did install the Asus extra Linux-based OS, browser and multi-media interface called Express Gate when I Clean Installed the OS, drivers and utilities onto the new SSD, because I tried it out on another Asus laptop that I own and saw no need to put another 350MB of data onto the new SSD for that software, as it would never get used...just a fyi if doing a Clean Install at some point...you can leave that out and good riddance! I left out virtually all of the Asus bloatware/company software, games, and other trivia that they stick on their laptops when doing that Clean Install, and you can do the same with the OEM HD for that matter, and good riddance to all of it, because a nice laptop should not be burdened down with a ton of unnecessary software that just takes up precious space and slows down things to a crawl...that part of Asus laptops I can do without, and a Clean Install ends it for good.Multimedia, complex heavy-duty 3-D games, code crunching, Folding@Home/Seti, streaming media, and BluRay are all covered with my G51JX-A1 the way that I have it set up, and with the fast SSD in place and 8GB of fast 1333Mhz RAM I have a very, very solid performing laptop, one that perhaps is the apple of my eye! I think that the nice backpack and gaming mouse ("Abyssus" in most G51's I've found to be the case) from Asus for the A1 version of this laptop was a very thoughtful thing to include and the backpack works a treat! It's just big enough for the notebook, PSU, a mouse, and some software and DVD's and not much else, but so what? My wife used the backpack on a trip to Indonesia this summer, and it functioned perfect stuffed with her MBPro laptop and a ton of personal supplies (more than I would have taken, of course...you know women), and she thanked me at last 10X for letting her "borrow it" for the trip.[...] I couldn't be happier with this powerhouse of a laptop, and everything has worked out fantastic! Thanks for a great deal, [...] and I am stylin' with the best laptop on planet earth, my customized Asus G51JX-A1 with all the options and extras I want installed, and working 110%! Not everybody is going to do to their G51 what I have done to mine, but I wanted to detail it for B&H readers just to show that *it can be done, and done easily, too!*

Do not buy this laptop or any Asus laptop for that matter.
I would to remark that before I bought this laptop I respected Asus as high quality manufacturer of high end computer parts. I thought the specs were great and the price competitive. However, since this purchase I have become extremely dissatisfied.
Out of box, I had to do a bios update to avoid getting the good ol' blue screen every hour and I had to update my video card driver to play any program that would require something as nice as a GeForce GTS 360M. I was surprised to find any computer sold in such an unstable state. More to the point, the bezel on the camera came loose starting to split the top of the laptop apart after ordinary daily use. This was the cause for my first RMA. Then, I come to find out I have to pay shipping and insurance for Asus to honor a warranty on their faulty product. I found this unacceptable on a product that cost well over a thousand dollars. I went and complained on their site and they decided to pay for my shipping for my second RMA. The screen started having bright spots on it. They replaced the LCD panel. After this the monitor went out entirely. This is the third RMA. At this point I started saving the box and packing they send it so I can send back without having to scrounge around for packing. Now the HDMI port will not send a signal. RMA number four. They were not able to fix the laptop's HDMI problem.
At this point Asus decided to send me a different refurbished G51jx laptop. Again, after using this for only a little bit the camera bezel came loose again and the HDMI port did not work. This would be the fifth RMA. Finally, I am now on my sixth RMA. Right now, the laptop can't stop switching between AC and battery power, the speakers have become practically inaudible at full volume, and when I'm doing something as mundane as checking email it will unpredictably spaz out. The screen will do a crazy tie-dye rainbow thing, I have no idea how else to describe it, and the laptop will crash. Buyers beware!!!
My G51jx faults listed in chronological order:
1. Bad bios
2. Bad video card driver
3. Loose camera bezel
4. Bright spots on LCD
5. LCD failure
6. HDMI port failure
7. Loose camera bezel part II
8. HDMI port failure part II
9. Power supply issues
10. Speaker volume issues
11. Tie-dye rainbow crashes
Asus is not willing to do very much for the end user. They would prefer to do half way fixes on an inferior product and wait till the warranty runs out. If they can't fix the problem properly they ask to "recover the operating system." This means they do a wipe and make you start from scratch. I will never buy an Asus laptop or any other Asus product again.

First of all, B&H has been great. Very reliable [...] keep it up!Second, i got lucky with this laptop. It advertised that it came with an external IR transmitter for the 3D glasses but what i got is built in which is great!!!! Looked at the system info and it says Model: G60 not a G51. Installed a few games like Modern Warfare, Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box and Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars and played flawlessly in 3D. All set to the highest settings. Played 3D BluRay such as Avatar and How to train your dragon. Awesome details in 3D! I mainly use this for Video editing (Sony Vegas Pro 9)and photoshop and it works great. This laptop is massive i mean thick with all the goodies inside. People complain its heavy, DUH! of course, read the specs to why its so heavy and im not complaining, theres a reason why its heavy. Also people complain why battery life runs down fast, well DUH! read the specs again, theres a reason why. ITS A GAMING LAPTOP. If you are playing games on this thing, why would you use your battery, plug it in an outlet!Overall the build quality, features, performance of this laptop is 5 out of 5. The built in IR for the 3D glasses is a plus, like i said i got super lucky.Start up is fast too! But remember, the more you install programs the slower it gets most especially the ones than runs on startup. RAM is 6 gigs, i just upgraded mine to 8 gigs, that is the max!If you get this, update Windows. This laptop is also quiet! If youre looking at quality laptops, stick with ASUS and they will never disappoint you!One thing i dont like, is the partitioned harddrive, thats it.Best use for heavy video editing, photo editing, gaming and music.

I use this machine as my "multimedia machine", as an animator I've started relying on this product because of it's Quad Core & the Mid-High 1GB GTS 360M, Note that this will not be a "better" replacement for Apple MacBook Pro :] with that said,
this laptop rocks the latest games with satisfactory FPS, ASUS have their own CPU overclocking application Power4Gear Hybrid this thing fires-up the i7 720QM
Add SSD, Couple of Memory Sticks & Blu-ray drive
& you "might" take the lead :]
No doubt this lappy will be obsolete in the near future, but I'll enjoy it while I can :3

Comments about ASUS G51Jx-A1 15.6" Notebook Computer:
The Good:
The specs on this laptop are very good.
The screen is sharp.
The keyboard is subjective, but it is ok IMO.
Prebuilt so ships immediately (unlike Dell).
The Bad:
This barely fits in my Lowepro Fastpack 350 bag.
Under normal usage heat isn't a problem, but under load the left-hand side will get hot (and be blowing hot air out as well).
The screen LOOKS small because of the large borders around it.
3.5 HOURS creating the 6 DVD recovery disks, since Asus doesn't provide a Windows 7 installation disk.
Poor battery life, but that doesn't bother me, since I like having my laptop plugged in for performance reasons.
Other thoughts:
I like the Targus bag that comes with the A1.
I do NOT like the mouse, because the center of balance is near the rear, resulting in angled-lifting of the mouse which moves your cursor/crosshair UP noticeably.
This A1 variant uses the 2nd HDD bay for more memory capacity.
Many people won't like the gaming look and feel, but it isn't as bad as an Alienware.
The Asus G53 series has also been recently announced and looks identical except for the upgraded video card to a nVidia Geforce GTX 460M 1.5GB.
Final Words:
A laptop is the combination of Price, Performance, Size/Weight, and Heat. The G51Jx-A1 excels in the first two qualities, at the expense of the last two qualities.
[I would not recommend this to most of my friends, because their needs are different than mine. But I would recommend it to a power-user that also plays games.]

Comments about ASUS G51Jx-A1 15.6" Notebook Computer:
I use the laptop to do a number of things- primarily I game and web surf on it. I also use it to watch movies, youtube, and Skype. Work- mainly just Microsoft Office and online reports.
Plus: Great screen resolution.
Design is actually more appealing than I thought it would be.
Great processing power.
Runs Warhammer Online and Call of Duty Modern Warfare well at top resolutions.
The instant boot internet is quite handy.
Has performed excellently for 2 weeks for me.
Average: Sound is very average- could be louder.
I thought it would be heavier, so I was pleased to find out it was average for me as a 25 year old male.
Minus: Puts out a lot of heat at the back left side.
When unplugged battery drops like a rock (expected of a high performance computer).
Overall- I would highly recommend, despite having a few things that I would definitely work on from Asus' standpoint. It is a great computer that games well and does multi-media and web surfing extremely well. The bag and mouse that come with it are very good quality. I have not used the bag but is very rugged and looks to be great quality. The mouse is perfect if you're sitting and using as a desktop, but it's a bit big to lug around.
Recommendations: Get a wireless mouse and keyboard- I got Logitech- very useful. I also got a Swissgear back that works great with the computer for work. I also recommend a good cooler for with it when you're gaming.

My son wanted a gaming laptop and he got one. It runs WAY hot so you will need the notebook cooler. On the upside, the screen resolution and speed are great. It comes with a gaming mouse as well. On the downside, it's toasty. It's also heavy but not as heavy as he was expecting given the power it packs.

This is the best laptop I have ever had - hands down. I can keep tons of websites, programs and documents open at once, and nothing slows down. The monitor is beautiful, and I can view 2 documents at once without problems. I use the 'power saver' mode when unplugged, and 'high performance' makes everything look great - nice to toggle between these settings right on the keyboard. But the best keyboard button is the one that allows access to the internet only, without starting up the hard drive. Brilliant.
The laptop is a bit heavy, and I wouldn't want to lug it everywhere. But the monitor and other features are worth the weight.

I love this computer. I haven't tried to run anythig too demanding on it yet, but so far it has worked great. It has given me some trouble when I've tried to log in once or twice, but that is probably just my fault and was easily fixed by restarting the computer. Other than that, the only downside is a short battery life. That's not too big of a deal though because I just got a spare battery and that is plenty of time for me. Besides this, everything works great and it has a lot of cool features, including a face-recognition login. I think that that's really cool. Overall, the computer is excellent and runs well and the only thing keeping it from being a five star rating is the short battery life. Amazing computer.

I needed a laptop that had gaming capabilities for the sheer speed and ease of being able to run multiple large programs simultaneously.
This ASUS is incredibly responsive while working with the newest Photoshop CS and having other programs open at the same time.
The screen is perfect and the NVIDIA card is amazing. I checked other cards and the NVIDIA control panel isn't hidden within 50 layers making it easy to get to and make color and contrast changes to your screen. And you can save multiple changes to your screens color and contrast renditions so that you can change and load the one u need at any time.
I have no troubles with the laptop over heating and I've been using it 7 to 8 hours nonstop while working on jobs.
If I can do all this, I'm certain anyone looking to game with this laptop would have a great time.
I don't find this incredibly heavy either, though I have to say I was expecting it to be.
The rubberized pad where your wrists lay is comfortable, but I still use an external mouse...they are always more convenient and accurate for the work I do.
I am always plugged in to electricity so I really don't use battery that much. Sometimes I'm moving around the house and I'm on the internet. In those instances it's for a short time so battery life isn't something I've really tested.
One thing tho....the keyboard is incredibly comfortable and having the number pad to the side is great!
I would totally recommend this laptop to anyone. Gamer and non-gamer alike. And with ASUS's 2 year guarantee--which includes my being stupid and dropping it--you can not go wrong!!

I am an Engineering student (Computer Engineering)
and I need a powerful laptop. The core i7/6GB RAM/NVidia GeForce GTS 360M with 1GB VRAM is quite enough.
While browsing for laptops, I also looked at a comaparable IBM. That cost $1600. This was a much better deal, especially on B&H.
Pros:
AWESOME factory warranty
Back lit keyboard
Intel Core i7/NVidia GeForce GTS 360M
15.6 inch screen
1920x1080 display/HDMI out
eSATA
Number pad
Keyboard/palm rest stay fairly cool, while the machine is putting the BTUs out the vents.
Cons:
Kinda heavy/short battery(~1HR): Not portable, but I wasn't expecting it to be, nor is it designed to be.
Keyboard flexes a little. **LITTLE
The DC-in jack in on the back. Kinda annoying, but not too bad.
The touchpad could be multi-touch
Only came with 7 Home prem. 64 Bit.
Great machine. If you are looking for something with this kind of specs. and in this price range, look no further.

This computer packs a punch and handles computer games extremely well -- great graphics, backlit keyboard. It's fairly heavy and can get hot, but we're very happy with it. Lots of bang for the buck.
The G51JX-A1 package included a sturdy black computer backpack case and a gaming mouse (this seems to be the difference between this machine and the G51JX-X1).

I bought this notebook recently, 3 weeks ago and im very happy by my decision. First of all, its a really powerful computer, 6 GB of memory ram.. you feel from start ... in plus, in specification of computer is written that it is 1066 MHz, but in fact it is 1333 ... THATS COOL !!! um...what about Intel Q7 ... it's works exactly as i fought... best processor for now ! About Video Card ... its run all my games,at the highest video options. What about sound ... the quality of it is very good, 4.0 HD Sound its really good think, but .. the speakers from notebook are not so laud .. this is the problem of all notebooks probably , thats why i decided to order 2.1 Speakers for my baby... so now im happy for 100%.
By the way, the mouse from computer kit is very good, its special for games, and its not wireless.... people who put it on the kit understand thats cable mouse, laser, is the best way to play better games...
Thank you Asus, and thank you BHphoto&Video for this computer !!!
