The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V Digital Camera (Black) is a compact camera with many professional features. The camera has manual exposure controls for the pro photographer who wants a pocket camera. For the new photographer, the camera has a built-in Function Guide that helps you navigate through the various functions and settings displayed on the LCD screen. The 10.2 Megapixel Exmor R CMOS chip will allow you to make big prints. The camera performs well even in low light with its High Sensitivity Mode of up to ISO 3200, Handheld Twilight Mode, and Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization.
Fast-moving subjects are not a problem since the camera can capture 10 frames-per-second. This, along with Motion Detection that adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when motion is detected, will help ensure that you capture the decisive moment. To really see your subject in motion, the camera can shoot 1080i AVCHD HD movies. Both stills and video are composed and viewed on the 3" Xtra Fine LCD display. Even when shooting in a tight space, the 25mm wide-angle Sony G 10X zoom lens will let you get your shot.
You can record the location of your photo shoots with the integrated GPS receiver and compass. Then you can view your images on a map with compatible computer and internet applications. Other user friendly features include Intelligent Sweep Panorama, Face Detection, Smile Shutter, Anti-blink, iAudio and many more. The DSC-HX5V certainly is an extremely functional camera in a small package.

The following impressions are based on owning the camera for a couple days. I'm holding off on a "5 Star" rating because I haven't tried all the features. I am overall pleased with the camera. It has a solid well made feel. I am pleased with the image quality as the photos appear to be sharp. The intelligent panorama feature works like a charm based on the 180 degree photo I took of the street in the front of my house. The 10x optical zoom produces a very clear image. I made a short movie clip using the 1080HD capability and viewed it via the HDMI output on the camera into a HDMI port on my Sony LCD television. Great quality! I used the GPS/compass feature to take a photo looking down the street from the front of my house. I then used the PMB software that came with the camera to place that data on Google Maps. It precisely pin-pointed the location of my house, as well as showing (compass feature) which direction the camera was pointed. This is a neat feature but best turned off as a default to save on battery consumption. The EV bracketing works well and I would suggest using that and third party software if you are really interested in generating a HDR photo. The resident HDR mode on the camera takes only 2 photos to resolve a difference in scene exposure and does only a fair job at it generally over exposing the high key (bright part) portion of the photo. The "Handheld Twilight" mode does a good job of noise reduction. I have a minor gripe about the PMB software in how it displays the information about a photo (file size, date, setting, etc.). For any individual photo you need to select the "Information" icon which brings up a submenu showing all the information related to that particular photo. To see the information on the next photo you need to close that submenu, go to the next photo and repeat the above. Since I live mostly in the Nikon world, I use Nikon's View NX to view the photos which, as you view the photos, automatically displays the related data in a column on the left side of your monitor. This is a lot more convenient if you are experimenting with settings and want to readily associate data to the photo.

I mainly bought it for the full 1080i HD video recording it does using FULL AVCHD (not AVCHD Lite). I also fell in love with the iSweep panorama mode. You just (rather quickly) pan across a scene and the camera (silently) takes 100 shots and stitches them together in a second or less. The results are pretty cool.
The videos are good once I watched them on my 50" plasma, they didn't look quite as good on my Imac or PC screens. I used Sony's PMB v4.2 that came with my (1 year old) Sony camcorder to make an AVCHD disc and then played it on my Playstation. Considering how small the camera is, it takes video that looks very good - and I am fussy. NOT ALL HD VIDEO TAKEN BY P&S CAMERAS IS EQUAL. I tried the Panasonic ZS7 but just couldn't love it - flash pictures all had a yellow cast, the 30fps AVCHD Lite provided a weird frame rate that looks like 15 fps because of the way that AVCHD Lite works. I also tried video on the Canon SX210 IS, the Flip Mino HD, the Sony W370 and the Samsung HZ30 - they were all terrible.
The main problem with the video mode on this Sony is that not only is the zoom lever "jumpy", but the zoom motor sound is recorded very loudly on the video and it makes a hearty CLICK when you stop zooming. It's recorded louder than any I have heard on any other camera which was disappointing. So you should try not to do too much zooming unless it's a noisy environment and/or it's absolutely necessary.
Also, it does not come with a version of PMB that lets you burn AVCHD video disks since I guess they forgot that it takes video - so you will have to have a version of PMB that does this or else the video will not be useful for watching on TV outside the camera (or for archiving) unless you have software that makes AVCHD discs - Corel and Pinnacle make software that does it but I haven't tried it.
The still pictures are sort of mushy and have too much NR applied. Wish there was a NR setting where it could be turned down or off. The low light pictures are good using the hand-held twilight and Backlight Correction HDR modes - these take multiple exposures and sandwich them together to get the best combination of highlight details. The stills don't compare to the IQ I have on my older Canon A720IS nor my even older Canon A620 P&S's, but I have a Canon 7D DSLR in addition to these when I need high IQ (don't tell anyone, but my Canon A720IS takes better outdoor landscape/beach pics than my 7d!!). DSLR video such is as found on my 7D is not that useful to me since there is no auto focus. This is why I wanted a P&S that does video.
The dongle that come with it (actually I mean the adapter cord) is weird for present day - why doesn't Sony just have a std HDMI connector on the camera?? Instead you have a weird connector on the bottom of the camera that only fits the supplied HDMI adapter or the supplied cord which goes to USB on one end and Component video and audio cables on the other (HUH???) What do we do with that??? Component is a thing of the past and I cannot for the life of me understand what they were thinking. Anyway, at least they supply and HDMI adapter, it's FULL SIZE HDMI not mini HDMI which is a little annoying too as Sony camcorders and pretty much every other kind of camera uses mini to full HDMI. So I have to drag another cord to the TV if I want to watch video or still on it from the camera
I wish it had a Zeiss lens, I am partial to the better optics. The G glass is good, but it's not Zeiss. Seems like they are getting away from the Zeiss lenses. My last 2 Sony camcorders had Zeiss and you can't beat it!
Lastly, the door that slides open on the bottom where the battery and SD card is is a little fragile feeling/thin. Mine doesn't pop right up on it's own when you slide it to the right, you have to fuss and pull it up. It could break off easily if you aren't careful.
So if you are looking for good full 1080(i) video in a small package (if you need to do high quality video but want to be less conspicuous) and you like the idea of super easy panos, you will like this camera.

I already knew this camera, sincerely I was waiting the last model of that series, but if you know how easy is to carry with you, and which kind of amazing and brillant pictures is able to do, you can easly forget ambitious and maybe unusefull upgrades in Gb and zoomX, choosing best value for money.

If you are looking for a simple and easy camera to carry with you in your pocket or purse, this is the camera. I am a digital SLR user and I wanted something easy. Don't expect this camera to have the type of resolution that digital SLRs do, also this camera does not shoot in raw mode, but the panorama effect is wonderful.

Takes beautiful photos. Features I like: semi-wide angle to medium telephoto zoom; backlight correction mode, burst mode (10 shots in 1, 2, or 5 seconds), and a great sweep panorama. There is a program override that allows a good range of manual settings or offset from the auto calculations. Several metering options. A manual color correction works great with weird lighting. One quibble - the camera display seems a bit "washed out"; the photos look much better on a good full-size display. GPS tagging is a neat option, though it might take a minute for the GPS to determine the location. The battery is good for maybe 100 photos; if you are a real heavy user you might want to carry a spare battery.

Full featured set, great for those who do not want to become photography experts, but want a capable lightweight camera for travel or family events. Image quality is not great but acceptable, with some noise at higher ISO. Some of the features that appealed to me were the sweep panorama, in camera HDR (2 shots only), shake /low light 6 shot blend (works great), 10 fps burst, 1080p video with stereo sound and zoom during video capability, built in GPS with compass. The camera has great features that actually work well. Hand held twilight mode is great for any low light shot. Ipanorama is just plain fun and easy to use. Ten fps continuos is awesome. Video quality is great. Some other great scene modes like soft snap blurs the background. A couple of negatives would be the lack of a grip, and changing white balance setting does not stay when you change to a different mode. I also use a recent mid-level DSLR, so I accustomed to great image quality, and this Sony IQ is pretty darn good for the price and features.

Got this for my Dad. Great camera for a point and shoot, nice lens, awesome panorama feature!
Easy but not intuitive menu...need some manual reading!
Don´t like that you need a adapter to plug into a HDMI and it does not have a USB port for easy conection you always need the bundle cable, and that´s not practicle.

I have been using this camera for a week now and I really like it. Some of the kety features I love: wide angle (25mm), HD Video, can zoom while in video mode, great auto mode....and the quality of the picts is great. For us it is the best combination of quality and features. I would definitely reccomend this camera.

I have an SLR that I use for most of my photography, but I was looking for a small camera to use when I didn't want my large camera with me. I recently took this camera to Jamaica where it performed like a champ and even had [...]asking for a professional photo release from my snapshots. Panoramic feature very cool for getting a wide view and the ability to under expose a sunrise turned it from ok to a great shot. Still learning other features, but it has performed really well. Really like the low light evening setting that is able to knit together 6 shots into one. Gives a much softer image than just using flash. Able to shoot multiple frames a rare feature in a camera like this. Processing time is a tad slow, but this is the only drawback I have found thus far.
