I need a compact and light-weight camera that takes high-quality images and decent video. I had an older Olympus that took adequate photos, but was bulky. The Canon is about the size of a pack of cigarettes, and doesn't weigh much more.
On Auto Mode, I have yet to find a situation where it didn't give excellent results.
I use it for photo journalism (I publish and underground arts newspaper), for taking photos for the web whether it be for website design, or online auction sites that I am not allowed to reference in this review, or Craigslist items. I use it to photograph my artwork.
On a cloudy or overcast day, I photograph my oil paintings outside. This gives me adequate images for submissions and even for publication.
It has an effective 1600 ISO, and even my low light images come out quite nice.
Large LCD display is clear even in bright sunlight.
I don't like where the zoom button is located, I have to go through contortions with my thumn in order to com[pose shots that require zooming in or out. And I would have preferred a camera that used Lithium AA batteries - when I am traveling abd the battery goes dead, I have to wait for a recharge. but I understand that this would add bulk and weight, so the Canon battery is a good trade-off. it is lightweight and gives me quite a few shots between recharges.
The lag time when shooting in low light or with flash is longer than I would like - but again, a trade off. Compact, and a very affordable price.
There is no viewfinder, but the bright LCD screen more than compensates.
If you want pro photos and SLR style flexibility, then this is not for you. This is a point and shoot.
My girlfriend bought another brand digital last year, and saw mine and is going to get one and give her other away. it is that good!

The camera it self is not bad but I was expecting a better camera than what I got. I bought this camera for my mom as a christmas gift and even though she loves it I'm thinking of buying her a new one because I've seen her struggle with this one. The camera is slow when shooting in dark conditions and the quality of the pictures is not as good as one might expect. This gift was supposed to be an upgrade for her old 6 megapixel Casio camera but to me the picture quality is the same.
The body of the camera is plastiky and cheap, but I guess that's what you get when you spend less than $100 dollars on a digital camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A3000 IS Digital Camera:
I bought this to have a cheap, almost disposable camera for an extended motorcycle trip. I was satisfied with the pictures it took, though the focus function was a stumbling block for it at times. I missed a pic of a bear in the road because it couldn't get past the focusing step of taking the pic and I was too excited/preoccupied with riding to slow down my picture-taking finger.
The videos were almost worthless. Once you begin a video it never re-focuses, meaning if you start a video in close and scan to show the background/distance, it gets blurry. Zooming in on distant sights just exaggerates this.
Oh well, it did what I needed at the price I paid for it. I wouldn't have taken half the shots I took had I spent more money on the camera, simply because of the risk of dropping it at 70 mph.
As for the body of the camera, it is very lightweight (surprisingly so) and though it's kind of cheap feeling, the light weight would probably do more to save it in a drop than the cheapness would allow it to break. Have yet to test that aspect though.
Overall, it's a decent buy for the money. If you're just needing something to take snapshots with, buy it. If you want even somewhat high quality photos, look elsewhere.

I bought this camera for my wife since Canon had a $50.00 rebate on any Canon camera. My wife loves the camera. The 10 megapixals take great pictures. Her only real complaint is that it doesn't have Built-in photo editing softwareHer old camera had it.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A3000 IS Digital Camera:
I bought this camera as a supplement to my DSLR. I wanted to have a camera that was small enough to carry in my pocket while on vacation, on days that I didn't want to haul my DSLR around. At the same time, I wanted a camera that didn't break the bank but still took decent pictures. I'm very pleased with the quality of pictures and the camera itself at this price point. It's much better than the other cameras I've seen for the same price. The controls are very simple and straightforward. There is a slight delay after you take a picture, as many online reviews have pointed out. However, it's not that cumbersome to me. I don't consider it to be a huge issue.

It's little clunky for a modern day camera and it has a bit of a lag but it serves its purpose as a throw-around backpack camera quite well.

Overall, I think this is a quality camera. We use it mostly for family and outdoor pictures and the quality is great. The zoom buttons are in an unusual spot but you get used to it. Large LCD more than compensates for zoom finder. A+

Comments about Canon PowerShot A3000 IS Digital Camera:
It is high resolution and compact! Fairly fast first photo! Easy to take great pictures on Auto Mode - it really does work 99.9% of the time!
This is used for almost all of my photos - from family pics to photos of my artwork to be displayed on the web or used in RFQ's and even for print.
It does take a little time to cycle between shots using flash, but still fairly spry.
I don't like the position of the zoom button, it is awkward to use while composing a shot.
No viewfinder.
For the price - I dare you to find a better everyday camera.

i miss having a view finder. otherwise, the camera works well, as i have come to expect form the elph series. this is my third. they last me 2 - 3 years of hard use in the field as a landscape architect. I appreciate their compatibility with mac products, and not having to learn a new system.

We purchased the Canon A3000 as a birthday gift for my father-in-law. But I could not resist the temptation to try some photos with the A3000 before I wrapped the gift.
Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised with the image quality and the sharpness of the photos from the Canon A3000. It is a real camera value!
I am about to ask Canon for a small commission, as I have sold three A3000 to friends after they saw the photos from that wonderful little camera.
