The Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter is an exceptional teleconverter optimized for use with FX and DX digital SLR cameras. It doubles the focal length of compatible Nikkor lenses. The TC-20E III is constructed of 7 elements in 5 groups and with Nikon's Integrated Coating (IC) you will see improved color and reduced flair. It has one aspherical lens element which virtually eliminates lens aberrations.
The 2x extender (also known as a teleconverter) will double the focal length of your existing lens, and will cut back the amount of light by 2 f/stops. For example, using this teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 600mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/5.6. Teleconverters are best used with longer telephoto lenses and are not recommended for lenses wider than 50mm, e.g. 28-105mm (35mm format).

I use this teleconverter with the Nikon 70-200 mm VR zoom lens. It is wonderful to have a 2x extension. The obvious disadvantage of using a Teleconverter at all, is the loss of light, not to be underestimated as this one delivers a loss of two full steps. In addition there is significant vignetting. This can be rectified fairly easily in Adobe Lightroom (and Apple Aperture I assume), but requires individual adjustment for each focal length. Other than that, copy specific settings to save time with stacks of photos. Despite these drawbacks of a two-step light loss and vignetting, it is useful to close in on a subject in a cheaper way than buying an extra lens. No comparison to the latter, though.

I use this with my 70-200mm fF2.8 telephoto lens. The best way to describe this teleconverter is "inconsistent." Too many photos have a "washed out" look, and focusing takes longer and is not always accurate. I have not used this under challenging situations yet (i.e., sports, wildlife, etc.), but the few times I have used it to shoot people and places outdoors, I have been somewhat disappointed. I have used it in poor indoor lighting with a tripod (stage productions), and the results were o.k. Either way, it's an inexpensive way to get 400mm from a good 200mm lens.

I gave it to my wife and expected the pictures to be grainy. NOT the case at all. Great addition to her 400 for sports shooting.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
Used mostly with 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II. The result is sharp, but there's definitely a noticeable degradation in quality. The extra reach is amazing, but losing that many stops is questionably worth it.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
I bought a converter for my 70-200 VR II zoom.
Drawing is much sharper and shows more detail than the previously used Nikkor 80-400 VR. In particular, the "long end". I am very satisfied. Perhaps I can sell my 80-400. On the other hand, the older lens is much lighter. On long trips and for my nature photography now prefer using 70-200 with converter is more usefull compared with 300/F4.

Nikon quality glass that gave me 400mm f5.6 (from a 70-200 VRII) a lot cheaper than getting that lens.

I use this TC with my Nikon 70-200 VR2 2.8 with my D700.
Very good option to use when you're okay with losing the low F capability. When that's not an option, I use my D300 without the TC.
I felt that overall the quality with this TC is very good (although this is the first TC I owned).
The only thing to really consider before buying this, is that it only works with a limited range of lenses.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
Used with 70-200 VRII. Test shots are right on focus and sharp. Great quality Nikon product. Doesn't take up much space in the bag and gives me a good useable 140-400 zoom (albeit a bit slow at f: 5.6). Shot candids at a University graduation on Saturday. Gives me an impressive tool for not much $$$.

I have only done a very quick test with this new converter on my 300 2.8 VR prime lens and I am incredibly happy with the results.
Much sharper than I was expecting, I think I will be using this converter alot more than I originally thought I would.

Easy to use. Ultra fast focus. Soft when wide-open as expected. Severe blue-fringing around white subjects when backlit.

I already had a 1.4 Nikon Teleconverter and just got the 2x one. I have to say I am not happy with the 2x. It is not as sharp as the 1.4 even when I crop the 1.4 to equal the same size shot. It is nice to get a closer shot, but you definately loos some sharpness.

I purchased the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. With the 2x teleconverter I have a great 400mm. So good, I sold my 80-400mm lens.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
The TC-20E III is a fantastic teleconverter that does just what it says on the tin. Tendency to a little softness wide-open, stop down slightly and it is very sharp on my 70-200 F/2.8 VRII. An excellent addition to my bag.

Use this with the 70-200mm 2.8G VR-II. Works great. Do lose some light, but that's expected. Came in handy recently in Alaska. Pleased with purchase.

Obviously need to use it with the factory recommended lenses. Turns my 300mm 2.8 into a 600 F4. Not a problem outside with natural light. Good buy for the price.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
I bought this after having the 1.7tc because I wanted still more reach out of my 300mm f/2.8. The 1.7tc performed so well and the reviews I had seen of the new 2xtc convinced me to give it a try. I'm glad I got it. This gives me a 600mm lens that is handholdable. Nice wide open @ f/5.6 but sharpens up real nicely just stopping down a few 1/3rd stops. f/6.3 - f/7.1 produce very sharp photos. Focus is a bit slower but I can live with it. I've been so happy with it on my 300mm that I haven't tried it yet on my 70-200mm yet. An excellent product.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
My new TC-20EIII 2X teleconverter has performed beyond my expectations in supporting my birding photography. There is no notable loss of focus speed when used with my 70-200mm f-2.8G AFS ED VRII lens. The combination also maintains excellent resolution of the primary lens. The f stop loss is well compensated for by the fast focus speed even in low light. The attachment interface design provides easy, rapid connection in the field and results in a firm and solid attachment. The resulting configuration presents a highly integrated lens system to my D90 camera body. This teleconverter is an excellent choice for improving magnification while maintaining small size and light weight, a basic requirement for transporting on aircraft and touring vans with fellow birding companions. No negatives.

After reading all the reviews on the 1.4 and 1.7 I'm glad I went with the TC-20E 111 2X Teleconverter. It's a tad slower focusing on my Nikkor 70-200 VR11 but nothing that I can't deal with. And the quality of prints are superb. I can't see any degradation at all. I also use it on my Nikkor 105 Macro.

Comments about Nikon TC-20E III 2x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:
I bought this to use with my 70-200 f/2.8 VR and 300mm f/2.8 VR II lens. The results are simply superb ! For a enthusiast this is a fine alternative to the larger 600mm lens. Yes, there is a trade off - 2 stops of light, that can well be compensated with an increase in ISO on the D300s. IQ is excellent. Some form of support is a must for consistent results. Auto focus slows a wee bit in poor light conditions, but reverts to the usual fast with a slight improvement in conditions.
