My wife is a consultant and has the freedom to work from home and her office, but needs a fax to communicate with clients and suppliers. We already have a laser printer for B&W printing, so I decided to get an ink-jet multifunction. I have an HP Officejet at work and in the beginning I was planning to get one for home. I am really glad I went for Canon instead. The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is a critical feature for these type of machines in my opinion. My wife sends a lot of faxes and this helps smooth her work. We have sent dozens of faxes and never had a problem. From my experience, the Canon MX870 outdoes the HP Officejet 6500 in this area. I read some reviews that said setup was complicated (there was even a technician that said so), but I had no problems. I am no expert and took me about 30 mins to set up the printer with a wired network (used router and followed the instructions). Easy.Beware that this printer is very big; but if you are looking for something compact you should stay away from multifunction printers altogether.Print quality is perfect for office use. I haven't tried printing pictures, and I doubt I ever will. Is more efficient to order prints in snapfish or kodak anyways (price/quality), but is good to have the choice to print at home should there ever be a need to. The scanner works perfectly and, again, love the ADF when scanning heavy volume of documents.Final note, the printer is currently priced very competitively, mainly, I believe, because Canon came with an updated model (MX882). The only upgrade that I could find was the print speed, but didn't bother me. Other than that, I guess the new model comes in black.. Both printers have a sugg. retail price of [$], but you can get the MX870 a lot cheaper.

I recently set up our new Canon MX870 which took a couple of hours (it might have been the operator, me, not necessarily their instructions). I was able to use the DVD to install the printer on our desktop. However, when I tried to install the printer on our laptop (which has no DVD drive) I tried to download the software from the Canon website. I was not able to follow their instructions and ended up calling their Customer Support line. The good news is that the Call Center is in the USA and the support analyst was able to quickly solve my problem. My only complaint on the printer so far is that it is very slow.

Comments about Canon Pixma MX870 Office All-In-One Printer:
After researching for over a year, I broke from my brands of HP and Epson, both of which had lots of complaints and negative reviews on their current printers.
I had received a "free" low end printer in a package deal from Canon and as cheap as it is, the darn thing had fabulous quality and has not stopped working for years of use now.
But I was going to have to replace a dying Brother fax machine, and we really needed a photo copier too as well as the need for a scanner. So while all of these other devices were just barely hanging on, I started research. And I kept coming back to this machine. Yes, there were some negative reviews and some people had trouble with theirs. But overall, most folks loved them.
I got the device about a week later and started setting it up. I run both Windows XP Pro (as a virtual computer through VMware Fusion) and OS X 10.5.8 on an Intel iMac. Since my office software is all Windoze, I tried to set up the Canon on the virtual XP Pro machine. No going. Would NOT do it no matter how many times and ways I tried. And each time I even tried to use the software to reach the machine, BAM!, it crashed XP Pro AND the Mac. After doing that a few times, I uninstalled ALL the Canon software, rebooted and have just now installed the software in the Mac world.
The installation, though it takes a while, went smooth, and I crossed my fingers as I tried a simple function first: to scan a photo. A notice popped up that said the computer could not find the printer and is shutting down. What? The computer just set the printer up! How can it now not find it? I tried it again. No good. So before I decided to box the sucker up or call Canon for help, I thought of something. I turned the printer off, let it sit for a moment, and then punched it back on. Wham! The PRINTER found the COMPUTER, not the other way around like it's supposed to.
At this stage, I really didn't care as I hit the button to scan a photo. It scanned on automatic setting a beautiful copy of a photo into a new folder (it did that automatically) on the Mac. Next, I tried printing a colorful, professionally made PDF file. Worked perfect and the printed copy was gorgeous. Then, thinking I was pushing my good fortune, I attempted to make a photo copy of that page I just printed. No problem. I showed both to my wife, a teacher and artist, and she couldn't tell which was the copy. Finally, I hit the "hook" button and there was the dial tone. I did not fax anything to anyone but I'm hoping it will work fine when needed.
So, despite the printer software not liking XP Pro in a virtual world, and a bumpy start on the Mac, everything quickly turned around and this gem of a machine is working just fine, making beautiful prints, copies, and scans.
If you're in the market, do yourself a favor and check this machine out. I understand there is a newer model that has been released (the Canon Pixma MX882 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer) so you might want to look at that or wait until the price drops in clearance on this great value for the money.

Some say it's slow, but I'm not in a hurry so the speed of printing is just fine with me. I haven't had it that long, but I read and compared alot before buying. I had another brand, all in one, for years and chose Cannon for ease of use, quality and features. So Far I'm a Happy Camper!

I just use my printer here at home doing genealogy and the usual It is faster printing than my Canon MP620 B which still works.Sometimes it would have been nice to have a fax machine to send information, but didn't have one so I had to go elsewhere to do it. Now I can do it at home. The copy function is really nice since I don't have to use my scanner on single sheet material.[...] I am very happy with it and recommend buying one. Thanks!

Comments about Canon Pixma MX870 Office All-In-One Printer:
I bought this Pixma MX870 printer as a replacement for my MP560, which I gave to my daughter when her printer failed.
Since I use the printer for light home use, my primary consideration is the cost of ink. The MX870 uses the same ink tanks as the MP560. Ink in the MP560 seemed to last longer than my previous printers. More importantly, cheap aftermarket ink is readily available for the MX870 (and the MP560). The MP560 was very economical to operate, aa I expect the MX870 to be.
The MX870 has performed well so far. Pictures and prints are very crisp. Copy and Scan functions work well. Wireless setup is easy and performance/operation is very intuitive. The MX870 has Fax capability, a feature lacking on the MP560.
The MX870 is no speed demon. Printing is relatively slow. The footprint is also larger than other printers I have had, including the MP560.
Overall, the MX870 has proven to be a good and economical performer.
