Purchased this camera as a wedding gift. Bride and Groom didn't have a camera which would capture photos and HD video, and since they were heading to Maui for the honeymoon, they wanted to have a pocket camera that could do both. Enter the ZS5. After doing a fair amount of research online, I felt this camera was the best package available for the price range I was looking at.
Things that sold me on this camera were it's image quality, HD video capture (720P), and quality lens.
Image quality is excellent for a pocket camera. If you are moving up from an older P&S camera, this one will not disappoint.
Video capture is great as well. The only issue I have seen with it in my borrowed time using it, came when there is a large brightness spike in frame from where it has exposure set for the subject. For example if I am panning with a person in shadows, and a white wall in the background is catching full sun, I will see a very faint vertical band where the bright spot is. I am being fairly nit-picky however, since when viewed on the computer, the band isn't overly noticeable, and we are talking about extreme swings in exposure. On the plus side, the camera does not attempt to adjust for the new super bright area, leaving your subject too dark. Again, for a camera at this price point, not a large deterrent in my opinion when weighed against other features. One other feature of the video capture that was a large selling point for me, is the ability to zoom in, and out, while capturing video. Many cameras at this price, either don't allow zooming, or allow zooming in one direction. Usually in and not out. Might not seem like a huge deal on the surface, however if you are capturing video of you children for example, and zoom in to get a close up of a facial expression, not having the ability to zoom back out will get annoying very fast.
Finally, the lens. For a walk around, pocket/vacation camera, I was looking for two things in a lens aside from overall quality, wide angle, and good zoom range. The ZS5 has both. With a 25mm equivalent at its widest, and a 300mm equivalent(12x)at the far end of its optical zoom, you really should be able to get just about anything you would want.

I was very excited to receive this camera. I have read innumerable reviews and found this one to be the top camera for its genre. It does everything that people say it can do; however, I am a little diappointed with the speed. Taking one picture after another creates a delay while it refocuses. It's a major improvement from my last digital camera, but it is still not as quick as the Canon Rebel XTi that I also have.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS5 Digital Camera (Silver):
I bought this camera to shoot residential photos, both outdoors and indoors, so the high quality wide angle lens was important. It was easy to use right out of the box with little 'orientation' or 'experimentation' needed. Much better pictures than the ones I've made with the Nikon point and shoot this one replaced. As an old SLR user, I considered a more expensive and complicated camera but decided this one should serve my needs well. 95% of the value at about half (or less) the cost. This was my first purchase from BH Photo but I understand now why a professional recommended ordering from them. I was going to get a DSL but friends told me to get the point and shoot...so I did. Easy to carry around, gets great pics and it is easy to use. The only thing that I would like to see is more fps but that would be asking alot. I would recommend this camera.

I use this camera for still shot and closeup video for training films I put together. It is great to have 1 camera that will do both. It is small and easy to use. With a little practice you have manual settings available so you can get the best pictures for your use. The battery has plenty of life; it eliminates the need to carry a pocket full of backup batteries.

Panasonic makes a great camera. It is much easier to use than the Canon that I had before. I bought this one for work to replace the Canon. I really like the battery life. The Canon used AA and did not last for more than a few pictures. This lasts much longer.
B&H was very quick getting the order to me and the priced was great. I always have a good experience ordering from them.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS5 Digital Camera (Silver):
Like all cameras above 5MP, the sensor size is the major criteria for success. The DMC-ZS5 is no different than the competition in that its sensor is too small to support so many pixels without noise.
This camera does very well in bright light, but will disappoint in darker settings, or where a large flash is required. If most of your shots will be indoors without flash, consider a DSLR, otherwise this camera is highly recommended.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS5 Digital Camera (Silver):
I've only had the camera for 2 weeks and used it briefly, but have enjoyed the zoom which is one of the best (furthest)for the "point and shoot" category. It has allowed me to get good close-ups that the camera focuses automaticaly. This was an important factor in my choice. The camera is also a comfortable and convenient size.
