I bought ZS7 for summer travel. Pocketablity compared to my DSLR, good picture quality, 12X zooming ratio, 25mm equivalent wide angle lens, HD video, zoom capability during video recording, good sound capturing, one-touch video recording, SDHX card compatibility, large and sharp LCD are the reasons I select ZS7 among its competitors.
I have been using ZS7 for a few weeks now. The camera starts immediately and doesn't have any noticeable freeze after taking a picture. The picture quality is really par with a DSLR at the lower ISOs but quickly deteriorates exceeding the base ISO as expected from a small sensor camera. Since my wife never increases the picture size on her computer screen even 1600 ISO is acceptable for her. She uses the camera in IAuto mode which delivers what most people expect 95% of the time. There is some high-light clipping in the sunny conditions but this can be avoided by manually adjusting contrast and exposure. In fact ZS7 offers manual sharpness, noise, contrast and exposure controls like a DSLR. The vibration reduction on ZS7 works better than my DSLR lenses 70-300VR and 18-55VR. I often disable flash and take pictures with available light. The auto focus is fast for a PS camera, AF tracing and face recognition works. ZS7 can also memorize the faces and attaches names to the pictures. However this doesn't work most of the time. GPS functions without any problem, even ZS7 attaches the name of the area (monument, historic place etc.) to the picture automatically.
Video quality -720p is not as good as 1080p but the difference is indistinguishable watching a 46" TV from a normal distance. When I connected ZS7 to a 1080 flat screen with a mini HTMI cable the video quality seemed even better. I usually watch AVCHD files from the SDHD card inserted to PS3; I guess they can also be watched from a blue-ray player with a card slot. The audio quality is very good with stereo recording. One shortcoming of ZS7 – it still suffers from light strikes when recording intense light sources. AVCHD (best quality) recording time is about 1 hour with an 8 GB card.
The battery life is not more than 30-45 minutes under normal practice and an extra battery is a must if GPS is used all the time. The LCD screen is visible under intense sun shine but I still prefer an optical view finder.
What I cared for: Image, video and audio quality, shutter, aperture priority and manual controls, zoom and AF during video, wide angle lens, GPS, one-touch video recording, innovative features like intelligent exposure, intelligent zoom and etc., camera made in Japan
What I didn't care for: More pixels-12 MPix, Leica name on the lens, different body colors (although my wife demanded the red body color).
What I want to have more on the next camera: Blue tooth compatibility, better battery life.
What I bought extra: A well padded soft case; a generic mini HTMI cable, a generic neck strap, a real Panasonic battery from BH, 8 GB class 6 SDHD card.
I still own many film SLRs, a DSLR, a few Point and shoots and a Video camera.
I can call ZS7 as my wife's professional camera and I strongly advice DSLR users that if you want to enjoy your travel leave your DSLR at home and take ZS7 with you with a 16 GB card.

Great photos, great video, great little package.
Only issue is the video button, too close to other controls, too eazy to turn off video while shooting..

I bought this for a friend. I like the ease of changing the flash settings as well as adjusting the exposure values. The aperture is limited and the images do not handle higher ISO too well. However noise reduction software fixes this. The manual is written at a level that assumes a certain level of knowledge that many buyers may not have.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS7 (Red) Digital Camera:
So far I have only taken about 30 pictures so I cannot really judge the camera fully yet. I am very pleased with the zoom and that is mostly what I have taken. The picture quality seems good. I wish there was a complete printed manual with the camera. I like to have a printed copy with me when I take pictures. The batteries are very hard to find here. I love the red color.
Wish there was a view finder, the picture is hard to see in sunlight on the LCD.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS7 (Red) Digital Camera:
I bought this for a recent vacation since I didn't want to take my SLR, and needed something compact. It functioned perfectly, and gave me some great shots both on land and underwater. The controls were fairly intuitive once you play around with it a little, although as other reviewers have pointed out the battery does not last as long as would be preferable. So either charge it regularly or buy a backup battery. That said, it worked great with the optional underwater housing and gave some great shots of a wreck I was diving on as well as some nice video. The battery housing door seems a little flimsy, but with gentle care it should be ok. Overall I am pleased with my purchase.

I have a dslr, and wanted something much smaller that would have the capabilities that I'm used to. This camera is everything I wanted! love everything about it, especially the picture quality, and have nothing bad to say about it!

This camera has all the bells and whistles! The LCD screen is big and bright, and all of the customization options are amazing, it is quick to focus and snap a pic and the colors are brilliant. We previously had gotten a Canon SX210 and returned it to the store, that camera is nothing compared to the ZS7. I am extremely happy with this camera!

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS7 (Red) Digital Camera:
The thing that isn't so great about this Panasonic DMC-ZS7: English and Spanish are the only available languages in the camera. My mother language is french, and I don't see why it is not available, while the same camera is sold here in Montreal with 4 languages including French. B&H have very gently offered me to return it without charge, but I kept it, confident that B&H would, for my next purchase, sell it with this language which is an official one in Canada.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS7 (Red) Digital Camera:
I had a DMC-ZS3 for a couple of years now, and handed it down to my in-law so I can get a new one. Love the color, it is a beautiful red that is not too loud overall.
I use it for everything, self portrait, landscape, video taping activities. The image quality could be improved, and it is not very good in low light situations, but the sound and video quality is awesome for the price.
I wish it comes with a hand strap that tightens around the wrist so I can secure the camera while taking photos, especially self portraits.
All and all, I love it!

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS7 (Red) Digital Camera:
I absolutely love this camera. I bought it from this site on a friends recommendation and have since then recommended it (and site) to 3 other friends. I love the features, and was able to start taking great pictures out of the box, simple easy to use, but powerful.[...]I really like my digital SLR, and only bought this camera as a 'throw in the pocket' but now find that I am using this a heck of a lot more than I ever thought I would, just so convienient! I've had other "point and shoots" but never was satisfied with the image quality etc. This one has me smiling every time I use it.My only negatives on the camera are that I wish the battery lasted longer and the flash was a smidgeon more powerful.Great Camera, Great buy, Great site! THANKS!
