For a camera that fits easily into your jacket pocket, the Nikon CoolPix S8000 offers an extremely broad (10x) 30-300mm equivalent zoom range coupled with 14.2 megapixels of resolving power, and a bright, 921,000-dot 3" LCD. Along with sharp, richly-toned still images, the CoolPix S8000 can also capture HD 720p video clips with stereo sound at 30 frames-per-second in lengths up to 1.5 hours long.
To ensure sharp, usable pictures under any and all lighting conditions, the CoolPix S8000 features a 4-way VR optical image stabilization system , the ability to boost ISO ratings up to 3200, a Motion Detection function that automatically adjusts the camera's shutter speed and ISO rating to compensate for fast-moving subjects, and Nikon's Best Shot Selector (BSS) that quickly captures 10 exposures and automatically edits and saves the sharpest of the batch.
For capturing the fastest of activities the CoolPix S8000 can also capture up to 20 pictures at bursts up to 11 frames-per-second (fps), or 3 fps for up to 45 exposures.

I bought this camera since my CoolPix 7600 wasn't cutting it anymore for my needs (pics looked low-quality, flash had TOO MUCH LAG, and low-light pics didn't come out anymore). I'm VERY happy that this model is much improved over the 7600!
My most important pics are taken on family camping trips (hiking, boating, sightseeing, or just around the campsite) in different lighting situations (daytime, forest, nighttime), and this camera takes excellent pics! I've played around with different scene modes and many of them work very well. when I use "museum" mode (NO flash--some museums have this rule), pics come out much better than with my previous camera.
I don't consider battery life a crisis--when it's low and I'm on the go, I can charge it through a computer or through my car (with a USB-to-car-power-outlet thingy).
my biggest gripe is with the flash placement on the top left--I've taken pics and realized that my finger was ON the flash, preventing it from popping up! I have petite fingers and it's tough to know where to hold the camera with your left hand. also, the outside front left of the camera is too smooth, so my fingers have sometimes slipped when holding the camera (GOOD THING I always use the wrist strap)! I actually bought a Zagg Design clear protective skin for my camera, so that helped with holding the camera.
Overall, I'm VERY happy that I own this camera!

The lag is better than most pocket cameras i have, but not great. i am spoiled by nikon's dslrs, though. maybe there is not one to come close.
The flash, i feel, is poor design. with it popping up when called upon, it presents a problem if you happen to have your hand where it sits, which is where you would normally be holding it. if your fingers are on the left side and a flash is needed, it simply does not exert enough pressure to give you the hint it needs to come up. It will pop up after you release your hold, then becoming vulnerable to damage.
also, you can easily press or inadvertently twirl the rotary dial when you did not mean to change a setting. the idea is clever, but as a low light camera, it is possible to change settings you did not mean to change. might be good if there was a button lock on the rotary.

I've been using an APS film camera for almost two decades; this is my first digital camera. I like it b/c it's very easy to use and the pictures are very sharp, the colors are very sharp and true to life, it's small and light, and the video is of good quality, too.

This is a good camera with a few problems. The flash is in a terrible position and the lens does not focus well at close range, even in the macro mode. Very hard to take a decent closeup.

This camera has more settings than I expected from the reviews I read. Not only is the zoom 1:10 but it has a macro function which gets down under 1". There are numerous automatic scene settings for such things as sunsets or fireworks. One setting I particularly like is a 1-button setting to increase or decrease exposure by up to 3 stops.
Picture quality is good, although I haven't blown up pictures very large.
Overall I would definitely buy it again.

Way to go Nikon!! The downside is the flash...it can pop up and hit your left hand while holding the camera but it just takes some getting used to...

I got this camera 15 days back. The features are really nice. I got a refurbished one, so I was worried if I would have all the features perfect in it. I explored all the features and it worked perfectly fine.
Based on other reviews of what people have said, you cant zoom in while shooting vidoes thats correct. But the trick is in you can zoom in with photo shooting mode first and then press the video recording button. Obviously you cant change the optical zoom then. You still can use the 4x digital zoom. The flash position is slightly awkward but you get used it in a day or two. The macro option is amazing it worked well. Its not that good for low light in night. You have to take it from nearby. As has been said in some of the reviews the photo appears as a painting in night in somecases. You have to work around with it a bit. Battery life is good, no problem at all. It has very good sports contious options. The smile detection also is awesome. But all in all a great value for money.

I lost my Canon PowerShot at the beach and was heartbroken. I loved the camera and I lost a bunch of great pixs. I checked out consumer reports to see the top recommeded camera in a similar class as the Canon and the Nikon CoolPix S8000 took the vote. I bought it site unseen, little diappointed in the look at first but LOVE everthing else about this camera! The look is growing on me!

I got this camera just 4 days before a cruise in the Greek Isles so did not have alot of time to learn the camera. I read the quick start guide and did some little tests at home and then started to read the manual on the flight to Europe. After just a few uses and 1-2 hours of use it was easy and intuitive to use. I could change parameters and settings with ease .
After a couple of days I felt comfortable shooting movies and trying some more "exotic" settings to be a bit more artsy with exposures and focus points. I took over 1500 pictures during the trip and about 20-25 minuites of video. All on less that 2 4 GB cards. the pictures on the computer screen look great.
the battery lasted about a day of shooting, so every night I would swap out the battery and charge the other for the next day and carry it asa backup. My wife also has a Nikon that uses the same battry and we each had a camera and a total of 3 batteries.. This worked out great as we never missed a shot because of lack of a battery.
The pop up flash is easily blocked by holding the camera. got used to that in just a couple of days.

Plan to use this as a take-everywhere camera for family shots and vacation pics, when I don't want to carry my Nikon DSLR. Quality of photos is very good - after adjusting a few out-of-the-box settings. Auto mode works for very well for most situations. Menus are easy to use, with quick acess to frequently used functions and settings. The camera is a little bit bigger than most digital point & shoots, which could be a drawback for some users. Battery life is very short; on a recent trip it lasted just a day and had to be charged each night. And the battery can only be charged in the camera - it would be nice to have an external charger for a second battery. Location of pop-up flash is not a big issue - the camera tells you if you're holding it down - but you may need to adjust the way you hold the camera.
