The Sony DAV-DZ170 5.1 Channel DVD Home Theater System just might be the ultimate DVD home theater system. It's certainly got the features, specs and that famous Sony quality to be a leading contender for the title.
Start out with 1000 watts of audio power. Crank it up to full power (not recommended) and the people down the street will complain about the sound—even if you live on a farm. At more reasonable volume levels you can enjoy a wide variety of compact discs and DVD formats—the kind you buy and the ones you burn yourself.
Of course the DZ170 can upscale your DVDs to near high definition quality. If you don't tell your friends that your new home theater is playing DVDs some of them will assume you're showing Blu-ray discs.
Another "of course" on your checklist has to be surround sound processors (codecs). The DZ170 has DTS and several Dolby variations plus a few of Sony's own sound modes, including one that improves the sound of highly compressed MP3 files.
You've probably never heard of D.C.A.C. but it's going to greatly enhance your listening pleasure. It stands for Digital Cinema Auto Calibration, which is how your DZ170 truly becomes yours. No two listening environments are the same. Sound waves are absorbed by curtains and carpets and they ricochet off bare walls and floors.
To customize your DZ170's sound to your listening room you place the included calibration microphone where you usually sit and after a couple of presses on the remote control your DZ170 knows just how to process the signals it sends to each speaker to create the optimal listening experience for you. Add or remove furniture or move your DZ170 to another room and you can quickly and easily repeat the process.
You'll find the USB port comes in handy in a couple of ways. First it's your connection to your iPod or iPhone. You don't need a dedicated dock to move music between your DZ170 and your portable music player. In fact, you can rip whole CDs to USB devices. You can plug in a portable music player or a USB flash drive so you transfer music to your PC or Mac.
If you own other Sony products you've probably heard of BRAVIA Sync. That's the feature that lets you control any compatible device that's connected to your DZ170 by HDMI cable from a single remote. And the DZ170's remote is pretty smart. Even without using BRAVIA Sync you can switch between watching TV, listening to the built-in FM radio, watching a DVD disc or playing back MP3s from whatever you've attached to the USB port with just one touch of the remote.
With such a rich set of features it's understandable that you may think setting up your DZ170 may be awfully complicated. Not to worry; an Easy Set-up DVD walks you through the whole process. Now we know exactly what you're thinking: How can I learn how to set up the system from a DVD if the system has to be already set up to play a DVD? It's easy. Sony includes a one page guide that shows you how to set up the system far enough to at least play the set-up DVD. After you've watched the DVD you'll soon be enjoying the full capabilities of your DZ170.
Like we said, if the Sony DAV-DZ170 5.1 Channel DVD Home Theater System isn't the ultimate DVD home theater, it's right up there. Buy it and try it and we think you'll agree.

Why a Home Theater in a Box? The answer is Entertainment. Movies, music, radio stations, TV/cable ready...what more do you need. With a price this low loaded with some serious features, you can't go wrong.
I had a surround sound system hooked up to my Sharp Aquos (via computer and HDMI cord)and it was nice but the Sony Home Theater System just blew it away! The surround sound is so realistic that when I am watching a movie, I sometimes pause for a moment to determine whether or not sounds are from the movie or from around the house...even outside!
My wife once got up to answer our phone only to realize that the ringing sound originated from the movie that we were watching.
The video quality is so good that I question whether or not Blu-ray could make a noticeable improvement.
The 1000 watts of sound is more than I need. I maxed out the volume a few times just for the heck of it...lowered the volume after just a few seconds. Talk about overkill. Trust me, you need a very large room if you want to max-out the volume, it is DEAFENINGLY LOUD!
This system really brings Action/Adventure/Horror flicks to life. The sound is way above average both in quality and power. If you never had a home theater system and you have a HD television with a HDMI connection...What the heck are you waiting for?!

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 5.1 Channel DVD Home Theater System:
I use this speaker system in a rather large dorm room. It is more than sufficient to provide good quality sound for the room.
The only potential issue I could have is the speaker wires provided. They have their own special plugs into the head unit. This was not a problem since the speaker wires were long enough for my purposes. However, if I had wanted to use my own speaker wire, this could have caused problems.

Got a great deal on this system from B&H just before Christmas. My daughter wanted a "boombox", but I got her this and it is so much better. We are just using it for Audio currently - CDs, radio, and iPod. She loves how the remote controls her iPod. The sound is incredible - it totally fills her room. Later we can add an HDMI monitor and she can watch DVDs.

Using this unit in my bedroom, easy setup, straight forward directions.
Has good sound for a cheaper end unit, was looking for a little more than the built in speakers on my 47" LCD TV. I was pleased with the surround sound, the center speaker and also the Sub bring out even more detail

[...] I'm using 4 different speakers from my old surround system having said that this thing jams. I use it in my living room and i'm happy with it. the sound is great for the price and it gets nice and loud too. If this is all you have to spend you will be very happy, I looked around online for all most a month before i bought this an i am very happy with my system. The one thing i don't like about this system is there is very little sound control. The sub woofer has no control at all. I had to literally shove a towel in the hole to damping the bass. And the sound quality of the radio could be better but i haven't used it much.

Comments about Sony DAV-DZ170 5.1 Channel DVD Home Theater System:
The screen is fantastic. Color fidelity excellent. Sound system so, so. The speakers for the sound system are in the base of the screen projecting sound down and not out. It often requires the sound to be louder than it should. I have since acquired a theater surround sound system(not an expensive one) from Sony that makes a huge difference when watching movies. I should add that the HD quality of the screen makes watching HD movies a real thrill. While the "HD" shown on TV has always had a rather odd characteristic to it making the projected images seem fake, the lighting flat and the production quality like that of a low budget documentary. Not a product of the screen but a product of the produced HD productions.
