The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold) combines high-resolution,14.1MP imaging with a wide-range (28-392mm equivalent), optically stabilized 14x UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical) zoom lens that packs wide-angle to super-telephoto shooting capability in a snazzy little package.
Canon's PowerShot SX210 captures still images in a choice of 12 JPEG file sizes (including 2 @ 16:9) as well as HD 720p(1280x720) video clips (with stereo sound) up to 60 minutes (or 4GB per clip) as well as 640x480 @ 30 fps and 320x240 @ 30 fps for lower-resolution applications. And when shooting hand-held, walkabout video, the SX210 takes advantage of Canon's Dynamic mode to dampen the bumps along the way.
For hassle-free shooting, Canon's Smart AUTO mode automatically analyzes the scene and sets the best exposure based on 22 predefined shooting situations. For shooting under low lighting conditions, the ISO sensitivity of the PowerShot SX210 IS can be dialed up to 1600, and when shooting in Low Light mode, expanded as high as an equivalent of ISO 6400.
Other image-enhancing features found on the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS include Servo AF/AE Focus Tracking, which kicks in when you press the shutter-button halfway, a Smart Flash Exposure System, a DIGIC 4 image processor, 'Miniature' and 'Fisheye' filters, Intelligent Contrast Correction, Motion Detection Technology, Face Detection Self-timer, Red-eye Correction, Advanced AF/AE/FE/WB Face Detection, and a Face Detection Self-timer that enables you to get your own smiling face into family portraits.
The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS records images onto your choice of SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, HC MMC Plus memory cards (up to 16GB) and powers off a rechargeable NB-5L lithium-ion battery, which is good for about 260 images-per-charge, or about 6 hours of playback time.
The PowerShot SX210 IS also includes spectacular movie functionality. With the Movie button, simply push and you can start shooting video and never miss the perfect moment. When shooting movies, you can get up close with the 14x Optical Zoom for riveting detail and realism, from the overall appearance to facial expressions! And the camera's Smart AUTO technology that helps ensure the perfect still image works to bring that same quality to your movies.
Now you can wait for the shot you want, with no need to reframe and refocus. With the shutter button pressed halfway, Servo AF/AE will continue to focus and track your subject as the moment you want to capture approaches. Press the shutter fully, and you've got your shot - with tight focus and perfectly calibrated exposure.

I wanted a good alternative to carrying my 50D with 17-270 zoom and the SX210IS is it: 14X optical zoom, zoom while shooting video, much less shutter lag than our other point-and-shoots, pocket-size and great color in sharp, bright images. It packs a heck of a lot of features and flexibility into a small package. In addition, my HF-DC1 supplemental flash will work with the 210. Recovery time is on the slow side when using flash, but I can live with that. I do not find the Mode Dial to be the problem cited by another reviewer. It is firm as it must be in its top rear position, but it is not difficult to turn. Probably I would prefer a lever to operate the zoom instead of the rocker-type control, but it operates just fine. The pop-up flash is in an awkward spot at the top left corner where you usually place your fingers. In the quest for small camera size, I miss having a view finder in bright light. With all the features the 210 has (too many to list here) it is a great camera. It will serve me well as a supplement to my 50D for family photos and travel photos (heavy landscape scenery and a little wildlife). I have not had it for a long enough period to comment on things such as battery life, etc.

I am a semi-pro, but when I travel (for non-photo business) I prefer to take a compact P&S, rather than my DSLRs. I take lots of aerial images from the plane, so I wanted a strong zoom. There are not many that have that in a REALLY compact P&S. I like the 14X zoom on this camera. The 14MP also allow for some cropping if it still is not enough. The 2 biggest drawbacks are 1) not having a viewfinder - the screen can be very difficult to see in bright light, and 2)the manual controls are a bit cumbersome - having to go into the functions menu to change the ISO adds several steps. However overall it is a very good camera, and I have dealt with Canon and its repair service many times, and their superb service gets me coming back again and again.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
Despite being 2x more zoom and 2 more MPixels than the SX200IS I owned previously - the image quality, especially at the long end of the zoom - is no better.
Vignetting at the long end of the zoom is bad. SD card slot is strangely hard to use, zoom toggle switch is plain awkward
On the up side, one one battery I got a 1200 shot GigaPan out of it!

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
Used first time for a fashion show in NYC. The movie one button convenience is great. To take fast action still pictures put the camera in P mode and adjust the ISO rating. It will take great indoor action photos fast in fairly low light (no flash) in this mode. Most important is to READ the MANUAL that comes with the camera (it is in CD form and I printed it out and put it in a binder for future reference). Also read the parts about computer downloads. The view grid is great for composition and the wide angle/optical telephoto is superb for ever shot imaginable. I can use one lens for everything. Best with a 16 GB memory. Huge LCD screen. I almost never need the flash, so I keep it down. Best way to hold camera is thumb and index fingers of left hand at either end, in the grooves, if using the flash, then click with right hand. Experiment with P and other modes, as well as auto mode. This is an advanced amateur, semi-pro-professional camera that beats SLR cameras in size and meets their performance in lens and pixel density, and it weighs next to nothing, fits in the shirt pocket, and does video as well as still. Great buy.

I tried to use the camera to take pictures of my 8 month old granddaughter and the "click time"(whatever that is oficially called) was way to slow. By the time is flashed, she was already onto something else. I've returned the camera because it did me no good.

As a backup to my Nature Photography with a Canon Mark II plus I carry it it my car. Great zoom capability with image stabilization.
I was surprised how easy it is to use the movie capability and have now figured out how to send those by email - great feature to support nature photography still images.

I did a lot of research before I purchased this camera, and I am glad I did. This is a great little camera with all of the advantages of a larger SLR. The quality of the pictures is awesome and it is so simple to use. I have a big Canon SLR but wanted something to carry everywhere so I wouldn't miss anything and this is it. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take great shots without having to be an expert photographer. A+ Canon.

I absolutely love this camera. It is extremely simple to use and the picture quality is excellent. The zoom is great for a compact camera. I used the zoom to take a picture of a dragon fly. Exceptional quality and detail. In the picture I can see detail that I did not note with the naked eye. I am also very impressed with the flash. I took pictures in a very dimly lit room, and the pictures are very bright and clear. The camera is well worth the money.

What's NOT to like about this camera. It has it all. Widescreen, 14.1 mega pixels, 14X zoom, image stabilazation, HD video, fun to use, attractive and so compact and light. I just love it and haven't had any trouble with it. As a matter of fact, I just bought one for my son in purple.

I was looking for a good all around camera, but I also wanted to get in some close-ups and zoom in on some others, without going to the expense and trouble of swapping lenses or carrying them, and I think I have found it.
This camera will take near professional shots with one click.
The software that comes with it will let you do a lot of things that I have seen in Photoshop.

[...]Happy with the purchase of this camera. So many features packed into such a tiny unit. 720p movie mode is definitely a great feature as I can do away with my older SD camcorder. Quality of video is great. ONLY disadvantage is that it stores in MOV format so I have to export to AVI (since software I use to create DVD doesn't like MOV) using ZoomBrowser EX. Takes some extra time but the quality is worth it. So far, so good. The camera is sightly bigger than the other top P&S ones for Canon (980), but the 14x zoom makes up for it.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
I purchased this camera to run with ... wanted a high quality SMALL camera with a zoom longer than 4 - 5x. A little more difficult than my G11 because all the adjustments are on menus rather than dials but that works good for running and it is half the weight of the G11. Learn the menus. Photo quality is excellent.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
This is the slowest camera I have ever used. I have an old Canon G7 (10mp) and the G7 will shoot twice as fast. The tardiness is in saving the image to the memory card - there doesn't seem to be any buffering. If you don't want to miss a series of multiple shots then this is not the camera for you. Using a faster memory card doesn't seem to help much. It's to bad - this camera has a lot of nice features.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
This camera is just flat-out ugly, and it's bulkier than most digital point-and-shoots. I'm also not a big fan of the setting dial, which in theory makes it easier to use different settings but is so clumsy that I found it faster to adjust the settings on my old Canon.
However, the 14x optical zoom is amazing, and the picture quality is great. The image stabilizer doesn't seem to be too slow at full zoom. I thought that the pictures were of fantastic quality for a point and shoot, though for the price it might be worth spending a little more and buying a DSLR. I just wanted a camera that I can carry in my pocket or hide easily because I travel a lot in areas where carrying a large camera is a big no-no.
Comments about Canon PowerShot SX210 IS Digital Camera (Gold):
The body design of the new Canon PowerShot SX210 IS is most impressive, lightweight and compact. The combination of a 14.1 MP and 14X wide zoom is absolutely fantastic. This will most likely be the last camera that I will ever have to buy.
