I was deciding between this and the Canon S95 for my wife. My wife has learned on my DSLR, and she liked the full manual control of the S95. But, she truthfully said she was most likely to leave it on auto the whole time and not shoot raw. That made the SD4000 IS the right choice.

The pictures are great on the this camera. Lots of color without over saturation, good tonal range, and a surprisingly good flash that balances exposure to not leave huge shadows when objects are already well lit. You're just not going to get a shallow depth of field with a 1/2.5 sensor even with an f/2-5.6 lens, but the f/2 end does allow for a lot of light. Noise is better than expected for the sensor size, although I would keep 3200 as a last resort and prefer 800 and lower. The HD video is great, the slow-mo video is a really cool feature that has been lots of fun, and the big LCD is crystal clear. Focus is as accurate as expected when it gets to decide, but it rarely if ever missing the mark it chooses.

The only true criticism is that there is noticeable lag between shutter and shot when using the flash. Not a focus lag, focus is achieved, the shutter button is halfway, and there is lots of light. Pull the trigger though, and it pauses for a period before firing the flash. Other than that, its nit-picky things. The shooting mode selector on top is difficult to set in the middle. The zoom control is a little small and feels a little cheap. White balance can miss on occasion. To be fair though, only I have noticed those things. My wife's only complaint is the flash delay.

All said, this was the perfect choice. Although I shoot Nikon, they didn't have a comparable product. The f/2-5.6 lens, CMOS sensor, and 28mm wide focal length are all features that you don't have to think about that make this camera great. The slow-mo video is a feature you never thought you'd need until you get it. Point, shoot, wow.

Bought this camera as a replacement for my spouse's older Canon SD700 IS point and shoot. The camera has a solid feel but is covered with a glossy red plastic-like finish which sometimes makes gripping problematic. It also tends to show fingerprints/smudges easily. Canon should update the finish with a metallic, red matte to improve grip and appearance. The SD4000 generally produces good photos, although they are not as sharp as other Canon point and shoots I've owned. Low light performance is very good and the zoom is average for a point and shoot. I found the camera manual short on instructions, so learning the various camera functions is often a case of trial and error. Overall, the camera is a decent option when you don't want to carry a DSLR.

I work in the TV news business and wanted to have a small, inexpensive camera to keep with me at all times. This camera gives me great pictures, video good enough to put on TV in a pinch, and a size that makes it easy to carry around in my pocket. It's also great for family pics when I don't want to lug around my bigger Canon camera.

I got this camera for my wife since she was tired of lugging around the DSLR and lenses whenever she went out with our 3 year old daughter. For quick snapshots, this camera really shines. It has a great f/2.0 lens at the wide setting, and has overall great picture quality for a compact camera. The movie mode is very useful as well. Love the image stabilization mode built in. Finally, both my wife and I are big fans of the bright red color and the overall presentation and quality.

Purchased to support museum collections documentation. Barely larger than an IPhone so keep your eye on it to protect from coveting co-workers. Red is a blast! Great product, sharp pictures. Easy to use once you figure it out. One star penalty for lousy manual and supporting materials. Plan to be on your own once you open the box. That said, I'll probably buy another to augment dslr.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH Camera (Red):

Great low light images, especially at wide angle. Macro mode works great, however the flash gets obstructed by the lens, so you will be forced to either crop the image or not use flash.

Zoom is somewhat lacking, but decent for a sub-compact, especially considering it starts out at 28mm.

The shape of the camera makes it easily pocketable, however, it also makes it somewhat awkward to hold and very difficult to set a flat surface. Be wary of the red glossy color. It's more of an orangy-red looks kind of tacky. I'm exchanging for matte black.

The layout forces stray fingers to be extra careful (flash, AF lamp, microphones, etc). This could be an issue if shooting with one hand or having someone who is unfamiliar with the camera take the picture.

Construction seems adequate. I like the latch over the battery compartment and the metal tripod threads.

Overall lack of buttons; features are menu-driven instead. I prefer tactile buttons. Most options are easily accessed in the function menu, however some are not intuitive and other are buried in the main menu. Red-eye reduction, for example, cannot be turned on/off quickly, and requires a trip to the main menu.

The whiz bang features are cool, and work pretty well. I can't see myself using them very often, but it's nice to know they're there.

The big LCD is nice and clear, however, I can't keep my thumb off of it while shooting, so I'm constantly wiping off smudges. Browsing photos with the click wheel is great, and I love that I can view the histogram and blown-out highlights.

logically laid out feature buttons make shooting and previewing extremely easy, and the resolution and depth of field are incredible, a bargain.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH Camera (Red):

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH Camera (Red):

Excellent Travel Camera. When this camera is along, I often leave other cameras like my G9 behond and my Nikon. This goes right in your pocket and still performs with low light thanks to an F.2 lens.

This camera truly exceeds expectations. The only drawback is working through the menus to use the vast array of features, however it is a necessary consequence of reducing the number of buttons on the camera. A key feature is that once you have made changes, the camera returns to your settings after a power down. The added feature is the on switch with a separate "auto" position so that regardless of your last use settings you can quickly power on and get a good shot with the default auto settings. Ease of use for the HD video couldn't be easier. The wide screen feature is great for people pics, whether indoors or out.

Canon failed to include a manual, a necessary item for such a menu-driven system. What's worse is that you can't buy one at the same time as getting the camera.

The camera still performed great on the vacation I bought it for, but the ease of use and learning curve could be greatly improved with a manual.

I use this camera to take pictures of my grandchidren one is 2 years old and very active, previously it has been hard to capture a look or expression but it is much easier with the fast shutter which has continous action likewise for my grandson who is in football. It also take great movies.

The auto setting is easy and, when you are ready, the options are nice to have. One thing I didn't like so much - the color is an orangy red, if I had it to do over again, I would have gotten the silver. Minor detail overall.
