The Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH (Silver) features a high-resolution 14.1MP CCD imaging sensor and an optically stabilized 4x UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical) zoom lens, which covers an equivalent focal range of 28-112mm without compromising the narrow profile Canon Digital EPLHs are known for. And for composing, reviewing, and editing your photos, the SD1400 IS features a bright 2.7" (230,000-dot) PureColor System LCD.
In addition to a choice of 6 JPEG file sizes (including 16:9) the SD1400 IS can capture HD 720p video clips (with monaural sound) up to 60 minutes (or 4GB per clip) as well as 640x480 @ 30 fps and 320x240 @ 30 fps for lower-resolution applications.
For fuss-free shooting, Canon's Smart AUTO mode automatically analyzes the scene and sets the best exposure based on 22 predefined shooting situations. For shooting under low lighting conditions, the ISO sensitivity of the PowerShot SD1400 IS can be dialed up to 1600, and when shooting in Low Light mode, expanded as high as an equivalent of ISO 6400.
Other image enhancing features found on the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS include a DIGIC 4 image processor, Intelligent Contrast Correction, Motion Detection Technology, Face Detection Self-Timer, Red-eye Correction, Advanced AF/AE/FE/WB Face Detection, and a Face Detection Self-timer that enables you to get your own happy face into family portraits.
The Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS records images onto your choice of SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, HC MMC Plus memory cards up to 16GB (not included) and powers off a rechargeable NB-4L lithium-ion battery, which is good for about 230 images-per-charge, or about 6 hours of playback time.
The PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH is equipped with the acclaimed Canon Optical Image Stabilizer, which automatically detects and corrects camera shake - one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. And the Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology is so convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash.

I bought this camera right before going on vacation and so far i love it! The size and weight make it a perfectly convenient point and shoot (though not too small to be easy to use or to get lost in my bag). I like how the auto setting automatically adjusts to use the appropriate setting mode though i can set a particular shooting mode if i wish. I was able to shoot some artsy photos easily with some of the built in features including turning everything except 1 color into back and white. I also shot a couple of short movies which were great quality picture and sound though i didnt seem able to flip it to take vertical videos. Overall i have only had the camera for about a week and have only positive to say so far!

I've been a big Canon fan since my first digital camera in 2002, but they really let me down with this one. I have already returned it. I normally shoot with a DSLR, so when it comes to P&S cameras I obviously have to lower my standards a bit. Even with lowered expectations, this camera fails in several areas. First is image quality. Unless you are shooting in bright sunlight, this thing is full of image noise. I wish camera makers would stop trying to cram so many megapixels into these things. The image noise (and the camera's attempt at covering it up) is horrendous in even slightly dim locations. The next big problem: low light auto focus. Quite simply, this thing cannot focus in medium light situations, let alone low light. For example, in a bar that was somewhat dim (but bright enough to barely read a book or see the color of someone's clothes across the room), this camera did not focus 80% of the time. Even when I would aim it at high contrast areas (such as neon bar signs, or a chrome drum set underneath stage lights) this would not focus. My third complaint is about the build. The battery door is so flimsy it feels like a fast food toy. Also, the USB port cover does not open far enough to allow connecting the USB cable! You have to open the door then twist it 180 degrees before there is enough clearance. I'm sure this would have broken off within a month or two, and the battery door not much longer after that. My fourth complaint is about the sound quality in video mode. There appears to be no auto gain control, or it doesn't work as well as my old SD850 did. I use P&S cameras in bars and nightclubs fairly often because they are nice and small. When shooting videos in a bar that was somewhat loud but not even close to painfully loud, the audio was completely distorted from clipping. With my old SD850, I could shoot videos in front of a large speaker so loud that it hurt and I had to move away, but when I got home and watched the videos the audio was always crystal clear. I wish my old camera never broke! The only good thing I can say about this camera is that it is really really small. For some I imagine that would be a plus, but for me it was too small.

This camera is used for both personal photos and job site photos. I use it to catalog and document construction work at building job sites as well as family trips and visits. It is a perfect size to carry in my pocket and yet takes professional-style photos for showing to clients, builders, and craftsmen.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH (Silver):
Bought this for my wife. I have a Pentax K10D. Very surprised by the perfomance of this little Canon. Stills are outstanding. 720p movies are very good. The mono sound of the SD1400 is outstanding. The 640X480 movies are good for that format. The 720p movies will only take 10 minutes per clip and consume 1.7 gigs of card capacity. The 640X480 format will record a clip up to one hour and occupy 4 gigs of card space. Flash pictures on a camera this small are usually not up to par but this camera gives exceptional results.
I bought several accessories for this camera. I go an extra NB-4L Battery, an 8 gig class 6 SDHC card, an HDMI cable, and a camera pouch. All worked great. The pouch will hold the camera and the extra battery. I would rate this camera as the best for one that is this small and light.

I majored in photography in school, but wanted a digital camera that I could take everywhere. Though it is not professional quality, the PowerShot SD 1400 really fits all of my needs. It is compact, the colors are accurate, and there are many different modes it can be used in.

For myself, the most important was its convinience of user friendliness, of carriage and of its compactness to contain most features that a digital camera should have.
That I can slip into my pocket or my purse allows for me to access the camera and capture momentous experiences which is very important and precious to me as most beautiful pictures are captured on the spur of the moment.

I bought this camera as a gift for my son. He wanted something that was thin, lightweight, but with all the features that a digital camera should have. I bought a Canon because I have a digital ELPH model, and I really like it.

Well after careful thought and the fact that my wife likes to take pictures, the cost of film then the cost of getting it developed, plus the wait time and if a picture turned out not so well there wasn't a redo. She decided to go to a digital camera if a picture wasn't any good well delete it or delete it later. I like the fact that I can tinker with how the picture looks before I print in my home, I don't have to drive anywhere go out in the cold or heat just sit down and print out what I want or need.
