The Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH (Black) features a high-resolution 14.1MP CCD imaging sensor and an optically stabilized 4x UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical) zoom lens, which covers an equivalent focal range of 28-112mm without compromising the narrow profile Canon Digital EPLHs are known for. And for composing, reviewing, and editing your photos, the SD1400 IS features a bright 2.7" (230,000-dot) PureColor System LCD.
In addition to a choice of 6 JPEG file sizes (including 16:9) the SD1400 IS can capture HD 720p video clips (with monaural sound) up to 60 minutes (or 4GB per clip) as well as 640x480 @ 30 fps and 320x240 @ 30 fps for lower-resolution applications.
For fuss-free shooting, Canon's Smart AUTO mode automatically analyzes the scene and sets the best exposure based on 22 predefined shooting situations. For shooting under low lighting conditions, the ISO sensitivity of the PowerShot SD1400 IS can be dialed up to 1600, and when shooting in Low Light mode, expanded as high as an equivalent of ISO 6400.
Other image enhancing features found on the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS include a DIGIC 4 image processor, Intelligent Contrast Correction, Motion Detection Technology, Face Detection Self-Timer, Red-eye Correction, Advanced AF/AE/FE/WB Face Detection, and a Face Detection Self-timer that enables you to get your own happy face into family portraits.
The Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS records images onto your choice of SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, HC MMC Plus memory cards up to 16GB (not included) and powers off a rechargeable NB-4L lithium-ion battery, which is good for about 230 images-per-charge, or about 6 hours of playback time.
The PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH is equipped with the acclaimed Canon Optical Image Stabilizer, which automatically detects and corrects camera shake - one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. And the Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology is so convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash.

I bought this camera to replace my SD890. I bought the 890 to replace my 300(which I still have and love). The 890 is no "elph". It's too fat and heavy for me. The 1400 is a great camera. It's the smallest camera with the most features I could find. The 4x zoom is very responsive and the images always appear steady in the viewfinder. Canon fixed the photo/video selector switch design and the zoom toggle is better too. The pics are crisp and the HD video is a plus. I use mine with a neck lanyard and you forget it's there. I take it everywhere. I use it for fishing, boating biking etc. Only wish they had a water resistent one.

I have had Digital Elph SD1000 for 4 years as an "always at hand" travel companion. It did quite good job. Unfortunately my children scratched the lenses. The SD1000 experience steered my choice and I expected that newer SD1400 would performed at list the same. I am quite disappointed. I compare photos taken almost simultaneously by my wife and I with old and new cameras in same indoor setting. The photos coming out not as sharp and crispy, as we still are getting from 4 years old predecessor. The shots made from tripod are still appear out of focus. Even at close range with flush there are notable noise (grainy photos), the colors are kind of milky-pastel, yellowish-green children faces. The menu of set up features are inconveniently cascaded, that takes additional time to switch mode. With great regret I will have to return this camera to exchange it for something better of that size and price.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH (Black):
I wanted a camera with manual exposure controls, but my family insisted on this one. It wasn't a bad choice at all though! It actually takes very nice photos and videos. The battery life is great (much better than my last camera) and it fits well in my small hands.
The only real problem I face on a regular basis with this camera is the focus. I mean, it's not terrible, but I shoot a lot of macro and sometimes it's hard to get the right focus when I'm up close. I suppose that's my fault for not getting a camera with manual focus, but it's just something I've noticed. When I do get the focus right, though, the image turns out great.

This camera will fit in the palm of your hand.
Takes great pictures and video. But that is the ONLY upside.
But it still needs a lot of work. Very buggy operating system. And the menu is a maze to find things.
The manual is TOTALLY worthless and they might as well not give you one! I had to lookup this model on a camera blog site to find out how to use the menu, since cool things are hidden and not in the manual.
Very disappointed with this Canon camera. Would have taken back, but it was a gift.
Way to small for most peoples hands. Only a matter of time before it gets dropped on a hard surface and flies in a million pieces! It is slick and hard to hang onto. You need to put the lanyard on before you pull it out of the case. Have had many blurred pictures since this camera is so small and hard to hold steady.

When it isn't convenient to take my "real" Canon, this baby-canon is a great throw-it-in-your-purse option. The option menus are intuitive and the touch screen makes them very convenient. Speaking of which, I love, love, love being able to touch a focus point on the screen. I had some early problems with the autofocus not working well that I am still trying to figure out but have been using the program modes with no problems. I have only had the camera a month or so and am sure if it continues, Canon will make it right. The MAJOR downside is that the battery life is very limited. I would highly recommend a back up battery. It doesn't hold a fourth of the battery life of other point and shoot canons I have owned.

Good for the point-and-shooter! Great photo quality and plenty of shooting mode options. The color accent option is fun to play around with. The camera is a little small and can be difficult to hang on to. Just be sure to use the wrist strap! Great camera overall. Definitely would recommend to friends and family!
