The Pentax Optio W90 Compact Digital Camera is ideal for the adventurous photographer as it allows shooting in extreme environmental conditions. It is waterproof to up to 20' (6.1 m), great for snorkeling, boating or shooting in the rain or snow. It is also dustproof so you don't have to worry about ruined images due to external factors...so go ahead and shoot in a dust storm.
The Optio W90 will operate in temperatures ranging from 14 - 104°F (-10 - 40°C) and is shockproof for distances up to 4' (1.2 m) so you don't have to worry (too much) about damaging the camera should it slip from your hands when you forget to use the included wrist strap. Even the W90's 2.7" LCD display has a coating which allows you to preview your images without glare from external light.
Its wide range of advanced built-in shooting modes help to deliver images with optimal exposure and color balance. With 12.1 megapixels and its wide angle zoom lens (35mm equivalent 28-140mm) you can make impressive enlargements. The W90 has a unique Digital Microscope mode which incorporates a 3-LED lens lighting system for extreme macro photography. You can get in close to capture nature's tiny elements or for other applications such as industrial, medical and product photography.
Its advanced Face Detection technology will recognize up to 32 faces in an image field and you can even program it to automatically release the shutter the moment the your subjects' faces turn towards the 5x zoom lens. The Optio W90 also has 3 anti-shake modes so you can capture sharp images and HD (720p) movies, even in low light.

- Combining a macro shooting capability from 0.4" (1cm) away with the Digital Zoom function, the Optio W90's Digital Microscope mode delivers a magnified view of tiny subjects difficult to observe closely with the naked eye. Thanks to 3 LED macro lights installed on the face of the lens barrel, the subject is clearly and brightly displayed on the LCD monitor even when the camera is held at a distance at which it casts a shadow on the subject. 3
- The Optio W90 features a Face Detection AF & AE function, which instantly and accurately detects up to 32 faces in the image field, then catches them in sharp focus and optimum exposure in just 0.03 seconds.
- The Small Face filter detects not only human faces, but also the faces of pets or other animals. When you select pre-registered dog or cat faces (up to 3 choices), the camera automatically detects them and optimizes focus and exposure. You can even program the camera to automatically release the shutter the moment the subject's face turns straight toward the camera.
- The Optio W90 captures movie clips at 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. This mode also offers a variety of editing functions: Still images can be extracted from movie clips; title images can be added to the beginning and/or end of a movie clip; and more. The Optio W90 also provides an HDMI micro terminal for audio/video signal output. 4
- Combining approximately 12.1 effective megapixels with the Pentax-developed imaging engine and the high-performance Pentax zoom lens, the Optio W90 delivers brilliant, high-quality images with well-defined details. Even when images are enlarged to larger sizes, the user is assured of sharp, high-resolution prints with edge-to-edge sharpness.
- On the back of its small body, the Optio W90 features a large 2.7" high-brightness color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots and horizontally extended 16:9 proportions. This monitor is treated with a special AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to cut the glare of external light and minimize annoying reflections, making it easy to view recorded images and on-screen menus even in bright sunlight.
- When capturing still images, the Optio W90's Pixel Track SR (Shake Reduction) effectively compensates for camera shake by processing affected images. When the Optio W90 detects low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, it automatically raises its sensitivity to as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed. This effectively minimizes the adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake under poor lighting conditions. During movie recording, the Optio W90 prevents blurry images by effectively minimizing annoying camera shake through the use of exclusive software. 5
- Thanks to its large, horizontally extended LCD monitor, the Optio W90 offers the innovative Subscreen Input function. This allows the user to display a thumbnail of a recorded image in the upper left corner of the LCD panel, so it can be used as a reference. This comes in handy when the photographer wants to shoot subjects from the same angle and at the same image size every time (such as photographing prepared food in the same way to compile a recipe file), or when the user wants to constantly keep a favorite image on the screen.
- Despite its compact dimensions, the Optio W90 features an optical 5X zoom lens covering focal lengths from 5 - 25mm (equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm - 140mm). Thanks to this wide zoom range, the Optio W90 can be used for a wide variety of subjects and scenes, from spectacular landscape and group shots to tightly framed snapshots taken from a distance.

I would recommend this camera to someone that does mostly outdoor photos. It functions best in natural light, poorly in low light. Although the macro mode supersedes that of comparable cannon models. The HD video wasn't what I expected it seems fuzzy and doesn't work well in low light. I love the durability of it, no worries about denting or breaking it. Other than the poor low light image quality I would give this camera 2 thumbs up.

I love this camera. I had an earlier model and gave it to a friend because they didn't have one and are living in the tropics. This camera feels sturdy and is sharp looking. I like the placement changes to the battery/disc door and hdmi port. It's more logical and convenient to download. The menu is the same easy to read and figure out and the even closer macro is a fun little feature to play with. I love that I can take this out in the rain or snow and not worry about it. Nice size files. The new on/off button is nice and the battery seems to last longer on this model. The delete is a little clearer to use also. Haven't had it long but overall I'm as happy if not happier with the new model as the old one.

I take motorcycle adventure riders from NZ to remote parts of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. This is a great little versatile camera.Being water and dust proof it is an ideal grab and shoot camera.
Other people have commented on the short battery life, but if you don't keep reviewing your photos, it lasts OK. I do have a spare battery at all times.

I bought this for snorkeling trips, but the SECOND time I put it in water, it's seal utterly failed and the camera filled with water. Unfortunately I was in the middle of the ocean at a marine park. No underwater photos from that trip. When I got home I sent it back to be "repaired" at Pentax where they issued me a new one, but I still had to buy a memory card again and pay to ship it to Pentax. How can I recommend it? I've been a photographer for over 25 yrs., so I'm not inexperienced about using cameras, including underwater ones. I will be putting the camera they sent me in water on a regular basis until my next snorkeling trip, so if it fails, maybe it won't be when I'm in the middle of the ocean.

This Camera i used as an every day "point and shoot" camera. So far it has been out primary travel camera and we have found very little to disappoint. It seems to adapt very well to all conditions, producing sharp clear and colour balanced photo's 90% of the time. Some simple features, such as remaining in mode until you change it, even when turned off, makes "catching he moment" very easy. Battery life is excellent and it has some nifty features for taking panorama's. Zoom is very good for this style of Camera, and under max zoom the Anti shake copes very well, although some form of platform would produce the best results. I would love it if this camera had a video button, so you could decide still or video on every moment, without going in to a menu to change modes. Lastly, the camera is a little slow to focus and shoot,even with a performance SDHC card. When you turn face capture off it speeds up quite a bit. All in all, for [$] this is a wonderful unit.

Good Color quality in daylight. Flash is strong within suggested range, however, it can wash out color. This is easly corrected with editing software that kids use today.
Panoramic feature is nice touch for still pictures like landscapes, it is a little difficult to use for group photos since it takes time to line up the 3 shots.
I would recommend this camera for any teen or as a great travel camera.

Takes a long time to focus before the shutter actually engages. The two flashes confuses the subjects and they blink before the second flash. I used it snorkeling and the photos are not very good. Maybe it was the water quality, but maybe not. I also do not appreciate having to go through the menu each time I turn it on.

This camera is perfect for having with you at all times. I have more expensive Canon camera's. But when the weathers bad or you don't wanna worry about carrying around an expensive SLR (and getting it damaged). This camera is perfect. Hi quality photos and Video (Note if you want good HD video, don't zoom, just move closer).
All in all I'm very happy with my purchase. The camera has gotten snowed on and rained on. I shot video the other day when it was 10 degrees outside. No problems. And no I'm not gonna drop test it (I'll save that for an actual accident).
Buy this camera. You'll be pleased with your purchase.

Trying to get used to the new camera but overall it has performed fine. Waiting to test it out underwater this weekend with the kids at a water park. Only issue so far has been a long delay if it isn't focused before snapping pictures. The display goes blank for about 5 seconds and I usually have tried to take another shot by then. This may be a user error thing with me not being completely familiar with the camera yet but its a bit of a problem when you are trying to catch a moment.
Battery life seems to be limited but purchased a spare so it hasn't been an issue for me.

Bought this camera to use in the outdoors, primarily whitewater rafting. Love that is has a sports mode that makes the action and bright shots come out better, but have to go through the menus to get there and it isn't saved next time you turn it on.

A tough camera to use kayaking, near water, outdoors in general. Compact, lightweight user friendly for handy use outdoors. Works well inside and image quality is excellent. Anti-shake handles motion on the water better than expected. LCD display is difficult to see in bright sunlight, as stated in reviews. I purchased an extra battery, a good move as battery life is shorter than that of my older cameras.

I take a lot of pictures of people, faces, travels, and the memorable aspects of our daily encounters.
This camera felt durable, and it fit well in our hands. The optics zoomed nicely and the recording speed to a 8GB Sandisk Ultra was great.
The not so great: On automatic and manual settings I could not acheive any of the warmer colors which I get with my other point and shoot cameras. Everything was coming out bright, out of focus, and lacking in color richness. I wanted to keep this camera, but could not overcome the color and brightness issue.
