Bought this lens right when it was first released. Debated long and hard about this lens as I already have the Nikkor 17-35mm 2.8D AF-S. Ended up selecting this lens because of an ongoing project that has me often shooting hand-held in low light conditions.
Never a moment of regret; lens is very sharp and definitely professional quality. This has become my wide angle lens of choice when in the field. Another nice thing about this lens (for field work) is that the lens is almost exactly the same size as the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. This means that if you need to keep putting the camera away, say it is raining or the terrain would cause the camera to swing too much, you won't need to swap lenses each time so the camera fits in your pack.
This lens is rugged, fast focus, dependable, sharp, VR2 technology, and balances well on the D3 series bodies. What more could you ask for?
On a side note, I would like to say "Thank-you Nikon" for continuing to produce professional lenses that use 77mm filters. Remembering all to well the days when everything in your pack took different filter sizes, I really appreciate that I can now carry a wide assortment of filter types (polarizers, grads, NDs, close-ups, etc). "Back in the day" you could only carry a basic set in each filter size or else you had to start making tough choices (step-down rings, carry fewer lenses, or get an assistant). While I probably carry just as many filters as ever, I never wish for a filter that I left behind.

Nice lens, sharp, fast etc. but..... the distortion is awful! All ultra wide angle lenses usually show a considerable amount of barrel distortion but this lens at 16mm is too much for its price. It only gets better above 20mm. The pincushion distortion at 35mm is not great either. The most surprising of all is that the 'Auto Distortion' correction is not available in Nikon Capture NX2 (2.2.4) while NEF files photographed with other lenses do. I called Nikon and they admit the software does not support the lens (yet). I'm not sure if the problem is in the Nikon Capture NX2 software or in the firmware from my D3s. The lens is great except when you do real-estate photography and you don't want to go trough Photoshop to correct each photo.
Last, being able to use filters is nice indeed, except at 16mm. The filter edges show in the corners at 16mm, so be sure to get ultra thin filter treading when you buy filters or shoot at 17mm.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Pros: This has turned out to be a great FX lens. My primary use is architectural and landscape photography. The lens is extraordinary sharp from edge to edge in all focal lengths. The big plus is you can use standard 77mm screw-on filters. This is huge when considering the actual field of view. The lens is quiet and focuses very fast. Cons: Price, but you get what you pay for. Size and weight, when you consider hanging the camera on your neck all day it gets a little heavy.

I am using this lens on a D700 which I'm still learning. Just receive this lens, but so far it's working great. I like the idea that the lense doesn't move when you zoom in or out. Photos look very clear.

Astonishingly sharp lens from edge to edge...I went to shoot Christmas lights on the first outing and am amazed at how sharp this lens is. It is a touch bulky, but WAY worth the weight for the results. I highly recommend this lens to any Nikon shooter looking to take incredibly sharp, wide-angle shots.

Such a nice wide to normal lens for DX. Great carry around for shooting folks in the crowd. Nice crispy lens with minimal distortion. VR allows those 1/8 second shots in bad neighborhoods.

Whe I bought this lens I knew it was going to be good. I just didn't realize HOW good. For many, this is a better choice than the 14-24mm. It's the best UWA zoom that you can get for the Nikon (aside from the 14-24mm).
The 14-24mm serves a difference purpose. For much less money you get a lens that is even more versatile. The sharpness is incredible.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
I bought the lens to go with the Nikkor 24-70 and 70-200 on the D700 and D300. I tested it extensively and found it to be very sharp. The auto focus was flawless and very quick. It is not nearly as heavy as others had said in reviews, but maybe it is because the other Nikkors are pretty heavy by comparison.

Sharp, sharp, sharp. Go ahead and pixel peep. This lens is great. Replaced a 16-85 on my D7000. There is just no comparison with DX lenses. Construction quality is fine. No more falloff in the corners, either in density or sharpness. Extremely sharp center, 16~35mm, full range. Incredible color fidelity and contrast. Couldn't be more happy. Stop fretting, buy the lens, get over its weight and length, and start shooting great pictures!

This lens comes with two ED glass and three aspherical lens elements - which means crispy picture, and Nano Crystal Coat added flavor of flair less image.
This lens does not provide wide aperture like f/2.8 but who need to use f/2.8 in wide-angle, for which this lens has been made. Primarily used for Wide-Angle shot like landscape, but also you can also use this for weddings or events.
Nano Crystal Coating push you to take landscape shot with out having fear of light flare.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
I spent a lot of time trying to decide between this lens and the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8. The risk of damage to the lens on the 14-24 was a big drawback and ultimately tilted the scale in favor of this lens. However, now that I have been using this lens I am so happy I chose it. The VR lets me use shutter speeds as low as 1/4...yes, I said 1/4. The sharpness, even at the edges is amazing(although I am using it with a D7000).
When I use the lens for street photography, here is what I love about this lens the most: (1) The ability to go to 35mm creates all the versitility I need in a street lens so I don't have to change lenses; (2) The ability to use a polorizing filter & an NJ filter is priceless--yes, you can use filters down to 16!; (3) The peace of mind that my glass is protected in a crowd in contrast to the protuding bubble of the wider lens cannot be understated when you have a $1000 plus investment in glass. (4) The sharpness & quality of this lens is nothing short of an optics miracle. It is the equal of my Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 for sharpness & quality which is astonishing for a wide angle zoom.
In short, get this lens. You won't regret it.

I'm not much of zoom fan but need them sometimes. I have tried a number of Nikon zooms including the 28-300, the 24-85 and the 18-35. None measured up to my standards. The 16-35 does. At 24mm, for example, it rivals my Nikon 24/f.28. Using Adobe RAW's lens profiles, chromatic aberration and distortion are well controlled. at 5.6 and above, corner sharpness is quite good.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
When I was debating on which wide angle zoom to get for my D700, I was up against the 14-24, 17-35 and this 16-35.
I shoot mainly landscape so the 14-24 doesn't help when I need my ND, grads or polarizers. The 17-35 is a much more expensive lens but has F/2.8, so while the 16-35 is a bit slower at F/4 the VR-II makes up entirely for it! I'm not planning on shooting sports or moving objects in low light, I have my 85mm 1.4 for that or my 70-200.
I can still get some nice bokeh effects if I go close enough to my subject and shoot at F/4, or if I need to go to 35mm. But otherwise it's a great sharp lens. Distortion isn't an issue with me at 16mm, you can correct it easily in PS. Though I really don't find it that bothersome. I'm not shooting walls or straight lines.
The only thing that I'd wish they did was make it less heavy. Though it's lighter than both 14-24 and 17-35, it's still no lightweight. Compared to say my 50mm 1.8 or 1.4, it's a stone, but of course not as heavy as the 70-200.
Overall, I would recommend this to someone that wants to use filters with a wide zoom and doesn't really care much about shooting moving subjects in low light or straight lines!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
I photograph a variety of subjects, from edges of bodies of water to landscapes to details. Even though the Nikon 14-24 F/2.8 is 2mm wider, slightly sharper and a stop faster, it is more expensive, prone to flare as the front element is very convex and has no filter threads. I didn't think the difference in sharpness between the two lenses at F5/6 or F/8 was significant and the less flare and ability to use ND filters was more important. In addition, the 14-24 does not have VR while the 16-35 does. That, too, is a feature of convenience that has value. Finally, anytime I can save a few hundred dollars and accomplish the task at hand, I will do that also. I would recommend this lens to anyone who needs an extremely wide angle lens.

I used this lens when I visited NYC during the day and at night. This is a great lens which I strongly recommend for landscape or pictures in a city. It has quite a lot of distortion but with wide angle ... No choice. This can easly be corrected with capture nx2. I wish I had bought it earlier.

This lens has changed the way I shoot. I mostly use this for landscapes though architecture and up close and personal shots also work fantastically. It has become my go to lens. It is the sharpest lens I have ever used. It makes me think about my pictures harder than ever before and what comes out is better than it has ever been.
Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
I'm very satisfied with this len, the color saturation is excellent. The VR has helped at times and f/4 is fast enough for what I do. Great sharpness and resolution, contrast...
Otherwise, you won't be disappointed. It's also focuses fast and quiet.

I use this lens on my D700 for nature, events and traveling.
I was really amazed by this lens.
Its amazingly sharp lens (!)
Fast focusing and able to focus really close to the subject almost macro.
I had the 14-24 2.8 before a for a month. and for my use this lens is a better choice.
The bad things about this lens:
Long lens, takes some space in your bag.
